D2 THE MONTANA STANDARD, BUTTE, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2010

BY PAT RYANof The Montana Standard

Cole Conway’s picture on theggooddiiggggeerrss..ccoomm website tells astory in itself.

The 6-foot-3 senior on the MontanaTech basketball team wears a sly smilealong with a prominent shiner in thephotograph, and looks tougher than atwo-dollar steak.

Turns out, the picture is a pretty goodreflection of reality.

Conway has seen enough injuries inhis four-year run with the Orediggers tokeep a full staff of trainers workingovertime. He sat out the majority of hisjunior year after playing one too manygames on a stress fracture, and has been

battling various injuriesbefore and since then.

Through it all, how-ever, Conway dusts himself off, gets up andgets back in the fray.

“He’ll tighten up hisshoelaces and get rightback out there,” Techhead coach AaronWoliczko said. “Then hedeals with it later with ice and sometape.

“Cole Conway is the only one whoknows just how tough he is.”

When he’s on the floor, Conway paysspecial attention to defense andrebounding. He leads the Orediggerswith nearly six boards per game on average, as Tech is in the top 50 in thenation in rebounding defense.

Conway attributes some of hisrebounding success to the infamous“bubble,” a device put over the top of

the basket during preseason practices.Instead of the ball falling through thenet, the bubble sends it off in odd directions, forcing the players to reactquickly to fight for the ball.

Though Conway says the bubble wasan effective tool, that doesn’t mean heliked it very much.

“I hate that thing,” he says with thesame half smile in his team mugshot.“It’s just chaos. You never know wherethe ball’s going.”

His name is written on the bubble —multiple times — as a reward for double-digit rebounding games for theOrediggers. Every time a player gets 10 or more boards, they get to sign theimplement.

“Earlier this season, when the gamewas all but over,” Woliczko recalled,“Cole knew he needed another reboundto get 10. He was all over the place andcrashing into the barrier behind thehoop. You can see he takes great pride in

his defense and rebounding.”Conway has the quickness to defend

on the perimeter and the strength topush the big boys around in the paint, and he’s expected to do both on a regular

Getting the job doneSenior Cole Conway playsmultiple roles, often in pain, leads ’Diggers in rebounding

basis. “Night in and night out we put Coleon their best perimeter player,” Woliczkosaid. “Then he spends another 18 minutesa game against the traditional posts whoare taller, but maybe not bigger. And hedoesn’t say a word. He just gets the jobdone, and that’s why he’s one of the topdefenders in the conference.”

Conway said the physical aspect ofmultiple defensive positions is the least ofhis concerns.

“The hardest thing is knowing all theassignments,” he said. “It’s no big dealchanging from the perimeter to inside, butyou have to remember your assignments, and they’re always changing.”

Conway is, by nature, a silent force onthe team. Still, as a senior he’s beenexpected to take a leadership role.

“Cole’s not the most vocal guy, but he’staken it upon himself to speak up more, especially in the past couple weeks,”Woliczko said.

“I always try to lead by example,”Conway said. “But I have to talk to myteammates. I think that it hits a littleharder hearing things from another playerthan it does from the coaches.”

That being said, Conway has beenpleased with the direction the new coaching staff has taken the team over thelast year and a half. “They really make uswork,” he said, as a compliment. “They’reconstantly checking up on us about ourgrades and everything. You can see they’rebuilding a connection with us outside ofbasketball too.”

Conway is studying computer net-working and expects to graduate next year. The employment outlook is good for hisfield, though he expresses interest in theelectrical trade as well. “Most people inthis program at Tech have a job waitingbefore they graduate,” he said.

Conway, a star player for Butte Highwho helped lead his team to the statechampionship game, went his entire highschool career without serious injury.

He came to Tech, and was drafted intoservice almost immediately, and beganhaving trouble with “little things”injury-wise. After his sophomore season,Conway underwent surgery for compartment syndrome in his calves.

Then, in the early going of his juniorseason, Conway succumbed to a stressfracture and was out from Thanksgivingthrough the end of the season. He hadplayed in a couple too many games toqualify for a medical redshirt.

Though he’s gone down with a fewsprains and bumps this season, Conwaysaid he feels better than he has in years.Still, the nagging troubles he’s had withhis health weigh heavy.

“It’s mentally tough to stay positivewhen the injuries keep happening,” hesaid. “With a lot of it, I just try not tothink about it until later when I can getsome treatment. Coach has been reallygood about giving me a day here and thereto get healed up.”

Though the Orediggers haven’t had alot of success in the win-loss column thepast few years, Conway said the team hasmade a turn for the better. “We haven’tbeen blown out at all,” he said. “It seemslike we’re close, but just make one or twomistakes that cost us at the end.”

The going hasn’t been easy by anymeans, but Conway’s run with theOrediggers has gone by quickly.

“I feel like it’s gone by a lot faster than Iexpected it would,” Conway said. “Noredshirt year sped it up a little, but I didn’twant to redshirt. I wanted to play.”

For now, Conway has his eyes set onpersonal goals — leading his team in bothoffensive and defensive rebounds — andsome wins for his team. “We’ll keep fight-ing,” he said. “We’re right there in everygame. We just have to find a way to pull itout.”

Orediggers aim to right the shipBY PAT RYAN

of The Montana Standard

With the arrival of another weekend of FrontierConference basketball, the Montana Tech Orediggersteams are both looking for a change of fortune.

The Tech women have lost four straight and the menhave lost five, as a difficult league slate has taken itstoll on both teams.

The Orediggers host the University of Great FallsFriday and Montana State-Northern on Saturday. Thewomen play at 5:30 p.m. and the men follow at 7:30 both nights.

“It’s another big weekend for us,” said Tech men’scoach Aaron Woliczko. “We have two distinctly different challenges. Great Falls is an unbelievably athletic team. They do a great job defensively, and tendto speed up opposing teams. With their length andathleticism they create turnovers which keys theiroffense.

“Northern is just plain tough,” he continued.“Shawn (Huse) has them battling every day. They’relike a meat cleaver, smacking you around and tenderizing. They beat you up for 25 or 30 minutesuntil you don’t feel much like competing at the

same level you were.”In their last meeting, the Tech men

defeated Great Falls 69-61 after a 17-2run that made the difference. The Argosnow sit at 4-4 in Frontier play and 16-7 overall after coming off wins overLewis-Clark State and MSU-Northern.Great Falls’ 69-68 win over the Lights came as Leon Sutton drained a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left on the clock.

The loss to the Argos was only thesecond Frontier setback of theseason for Northern, whichsports a 6-2 league mark to go witha 20-4 overall ledger. The Lights are ranked 13th nationally.

“Northern starts three guards who are just awesome,” Woliczko said. “They do a tremendous jobmaking the open shots, and (Shaun) Tatarka makessome really tough shots from deep range.”

In addition to Sutton, the Argos look to sophomoreMarcel Townes, who earned Frontier Player of theWeek honors for his 24-point performance in the winover the Lights.

Tech freshman Adam Greger is leading the team inscoring with 12.6 points per game, while senior defen-sive specialist Cole Conway hits the boards for nearlysix rebounds per outing.

Guard A.J. Paine leads the Orediggers in steals andassists, while holding down the third spot in the nationin free throw shooting. Daniel Simon lends a physical

presence in and out of the key, and leads theOrediggers in blocks.

‘THINK PINK’The Tech women will be sporting pink

uniforms this weekend, as Friday is “ThinkPink” night. It’s an effort to raise awareness

of cancer and help raise funds for research.“It’s good for us to keep our eyes on the bigger

picture,” Tech head coach Kerie DePell said.“Playing a basketball game really isn’t that big of a

deal compared to people who are fighting for theirlives.”

The Oredigger women will also celebrate SeniorNight prior to Saturday’s game, where Tabitha

See SHIP, Page D9

Tomlinson and Brianne McClafferty will be honored.“It will be a very special night all around,” DePell

said. “They have both been with me four years, myfirst two four-year kids who have stuck with me.”

Tomlinson has been a starter for nearly her entiretime with the Orediggers.

“Tabby’s like another coach on the floor,” DePellsaid. “That’s exactly what a point guard should be,and through the years she has learned exactly what Iwant in every situation. A lot of times it just comesdown to a facial expression from me, and she knowsright away what I want.”

Tomlinson has also stepped up as one of theteam’s leading scorers the last couple weeks.

“That’s not the role I asked of her, but she’s play-ing outside herself, putting everything she has intoit,” DePell said, adding that Tomlinson has also ledthe Frontier in assists for most of the season.

McClafferty drew praise from her coach for putting the team first. “It’s been like that for fouryears,” DePell said. “She’s always wanted what’s bestfor the team. She’s that type of player.”

McClafferty is averaging 7.5 points per game andhits 40 percent of her 3-point efforts. She has playedin all 21 of Tech’s games this season, and also pullsdown better than three rebounds per game.

The Orediggers, currently sitting in sixth placewith a 3-6 conference mark, have an opportunity tomove into fourth with a pair of wins.

“We go into every game believing we can win,”DePell said. “We just haven’t been consistent. Wehave the talent, we just need 40 full minutes ofeffort. This weekend we control our destiny and ourgoal of hosting a playoff game.”

Tech is led in scoring by freshman MandyMachinal, who averages better than 14 points pergame, while center Kelsey DeWit paces theOrediggers in rebounds (6.8) and blocks (1.5 pergame). In addition to her 4.4 assists per game,Tomlinson gets 1.6 steals per contest as well.
