Action-Adventure is a hybrid genre that combines the classic open world

adventure genre with the gritty hard-core action genre. This genre is rising

in popularity and includes vast open maps and an immersive story line.

CODES AND CONVENTIONS

• One of the codes and convention is that most action adventure games are open world and

allows you to explore the world in your own time completing missions when you see fit.

• As it is open world most action/adventure games contain side quests of activates to do

when you don’t want to play the main missions, this vary in every game from racing to

hunting and normally have a reward at the end that bonuses the player on his/her quest.

• Most action/adventure games are heavily story based and normally contain a lot of

emotions during the game whether that is anger, sadness or joy and this makes the game

more enjoyable.

• Most action adventure games contain some form of violence weather this is sword fighting

or all out gun battles and sometimes you can not complete a game without killing

someone.

Red Dead Redemption Assassins Creed Black Flag Grand Theft Auto V

RED DEAD REDEMPTION

Red Dead redemption is a 3rd person Action-Adventure shooter

set in western new Orleans in the year 1911, The player follows

rouge cowboy John Marston on his adventure to forcefully hunt

down his Former outlaw partners to save his wife and son; who

have been Kidnapped by the corrupt government of New Orleans.

Red Dead Redemption was developed by Rockstar games who

Have some experience in this genre with there Grand Theft Auto

series. They have many company's around the world including

Rockstar north.

STRUCTURE/INTERACTION/GAMEPLAY/THEME

• The structure of red dead is a mission based game although there is one main goal there

is a lot of different missions that need completing for a variety of people within the world

from a mad grave robber to a corrupt Mexican leader. This game is open world and lets

you explore the wild west as you please. This allows you to do a variety of activities that

can increase fame and honour within New Orleans. This effects how people react to you

when entering towns in a positive or negative way.

• There are multiple activates and side quests that allow you to interact with the world from

sports such as horse races to arm wrestling to more gritty tasks like night watch and

stopping a mugger. These activates normally have a financial gain like a reward. There

are also random stranger quests that require you to travel to an area of a map and

investigate.

• With real time random events the world comes to life when you often stumble on a

stranger who needs help or a trap on the side of the road, by completing these random

events you can gain large rewards such as chests of gold or a treasure map.

NARRATIVE

• Red Dead Redemption is an open world game allowing you to explore the vast landscape

of New Orleans with stunning mountain ranges to desolate deserts. This game is single

strand following John Marston a classic cowboy hero. Your objective is to find your old

gang members and to do this you must explore New Orleans to find them and kill them

with the help of anyone willing to help.

CHARACTERS

John Marston is the main

character he is a classic hero and

is a very gritty hardcode character

however does show emotion near

the end of the game, I believe john

Marston is a good character

because he is not all good but he

is not all bad he's in the middle

Professor McDougal was an

anthropologist that you meet in

Blackwater near the end of the

game , He was a drug addict as

well as extremely racist referring to

the native Indians as savages and

nothing but unevolved animals

Irish was a very stereotypical Irish

he is always drunk and violent

many view him as controversial and

so viewed the game as

inappropriate.

This character was a Mexican

tyrant known as coronal Allende he

was a very evil man killing innocent

civilian's and is one of the main

enemy's within the game

Mrs McFarland was one of the first

main characters you meet in the

game and is a trusty side kick

throughout the game she is kind

and helps you get through

ASSASSINS CREED BLACK-FLAG

Assasins Creed Black Flag is a 3rd person Action-Adventure game

set in the year 1715 you play pirate Edward Kenway on his quest

to fame and glory. After crashing his boat and killing an assassin

and taking over his role.

One of the main aspects of the game was the open sea and sea

battles as previous assassins creeds had stayed on land and

restricted movement to an island.

The assassins creed franchise was developed by Ubisoft and

includes a multiplayer mode and very in-depth story mode.

STRUCTURE/INTERACTION/GAMEPLAY/THEME

• The structure of Assassins creed is an open world game where you can explore the map

using a boat with its own pirate crew you can tackle the seas, the game is mission based

with lots of individual activates to perform, from whale hunting to treasure hunts

• There are multiple activates and side quests dotted around the map and each have

individual rewards, hunting rewards you in materials to make accessories for your

character where as treasure hunts reward in large amounts of cash, with this cash you

can buy new weapons, cloths and ammunition.

• With the now open sea advantage sea battles are an epic scene with 2 crews fighting to

the death, after a gritty battle firing cannons and explosive barrels at the enemy ship you

can then board them and use hand to hand combat to take over the ship.

CHARACTERS

Edward Kenway is the main

character and the character that

you play as, he is a handsome

ruffian who sets out to gain fame

and fortune, In the game he is

very selfish and looks out for

himself but becomes more selfless

near to the end of the game.

Adewale is one of the first main

characters you meet and become

friends after he helps you escape

the navy and form a crew for your

new boat, after that he acts as your

right hand man and first mate.

Blackbeard was another main

character and helps you defeat the

navy, he is based of his historical

character and was a feared pirate

at this time period.

This character is only known as the

grand master and is the main boss

of the assassins creed game he is

a Templar who are the main enemy

o the assassins guild and want to

use the artefact for evil.

Benjamin Hornigold and jack

Rackhman were pirates that you

knew from your past and are good

friends thy are classic pirates

GRAND THEFT AUTO V

Grand Theft Auto is a modern day 3rd person action adventure

however steers more towards action, It follows the story of 3

characters who come to work together to pull off the greatest heist

of all time.

This new 3 main character hub was something new for the

Rockstar franchise and you were able to switch character mid

mission allowing each character to brink an individual outtake on

the task

Developed by Rockstar north it is the most recent game in the

franchise and crosses some very controversial issues when seen

by the rest of society.

STRUCTURE/INTERACTION/GAMEPLAY/THEME

• The structure of GTA V is open world based and as these 3 characters you must work our

way up to the top of the criminal ladder, Michael and Trevor already know each over and

Franklin is the new young gun in this very colourful trio, like the other games it is mission

based but have the option to do the missions in any order you like and it allows you to

explore the world in your own time.

• There are lots of side missions you can do such as races and gambling, some of these

missions allow you to generate cash to customize characters and buy weapons.

• There is also a very large multiplayer that has attracted a new people with a totaly

customisable character and so much to do from online missions to death matches and

races, levelling up allows you to buy new cloths and weapons to maximize your

characters potential.

CHARACTERS

Michael is one of the main characters he is a rich middle aged family man who suffers from a lot

of anger issues and it is breaking his family apart even though they are a very broken family.

Michael agrees to mentor franklin to become a true criminal

Trevor is an insane red neck who spends his time cooking crystal meth and building up his

meth empire with the help of his cowardly friend, he is mentally unstable and many see him

as being a stereotype of a redneck and has caused some controversy.

Franklin is a African-American living with his auntie in the suburbs of Los Santos who dreams of

hitting it big in the criminal world. Franklin is one of the most controversial character and

stereotypes as a black guy from the hood who uses the N***** word a lot which sparked a lot of

complaints about racism.
