NOTES TO KNOW
AMÉRICA FULFILLED YOUNG PLAYER RULE IN 4 MATCHES
After four weeks of the Liga MX Apertura 2018 tournament, Club América fulfilled the league’s Young Player Rule, commonly known as the “20/11 rule.” The rule states that in Apertura 2018, each club in Liga MX must play young players (born in 1997 or after) for 765 minutes during the tournament, or face a 3-point sanction at the end of the tour-nament. To avoid a team just putting out their U-20 squad for one match, no team can count more than 270 minutes per match. Teams can also count minutes for players that played with the Mexican National Team U-21 squad during the tournament.
In Matchday 4, Club América became the second team to fulfill the rule. América also managed to find success while playing the kids, winning three of the club’s first four league matches. Naturally, playing your best young players on the first team would neg-atively affect the U-20 squad, but that’s not the case with América’s Fuerzas Básicas. The U-20 squad won its first four matches of the season.
Of the 967 minutes through four weeks, 665 came from players who have risen through América’s Fuerzas Básicas system. Of those players from the club’s youth ranks, this year one has made his World Cup debut with Mexico (Álvarez), becoming one of the young-est players to ever start a World Cup match, and another has won Player of the Tourna-ment at the famed Toulon Tournament (Lainez). While fulfilling the rule through just four weeks of the season, América has earned 9 points and sit in third place in the table while the U-20 squad hasn’t missed a beat, winning all four of its matches.
LAINEZ YOUNGEST PLAYER IN CLUB HISTORY WITH A BRACE
In Matchday 3 of this tournament, Diego Lainez scored a brace, becoming the youngest player to score two goals in a match in Club América history. The club record for young-est player to score a brace had previously been held by the late Eduardo González Palmer for 65 years, 8 months, and 13 days. Lainez’s first goal of the match made him the third youngest player to score for América in the club’s professional era. For his two-goal effort, Lainez was named the club’s Player of the Game, appeared in the league’s Team of the Week, and was named the league’s Player of the Week. Lainez debuted for Club América in league play at 16 years and 8 months old, the third youngest player to debut for América in league play.
Youngest players to score a brace for Club América:1) Diego Lainez – 18 years, 1 month, 24 days2) Eduardo González Palmer – 18 years, 3 months, 0 days3) Octavio La Pulga Vial – 18 years, 3 months, 1 day

SQUAD MANAGEMENT CONTRIBUTES TO UNBEATEN STREAK
Over the first six matches of Club América’s unbeaten streak, Miguel “Piojo” Herrera deployed six different lineups featuring 23 different starters in three different formations. The six matches took place in the short span of just 18 days, with the team scoring three goals in five of the matches, and earning a clean sheet in five of the matches. Herrera started the season deploying a 4-4-2 formation, switched to a 4-3-2-1 against Dorados in a Copa MX match in Sinaloa, and switched to a 4-2-3-1 for Matchday 4 of Liga MX at home against Monterrey.
