Down 1-0, Rocket City tied the game with a solo homer to left by Mitch Nay to tie the game. However, the Lookouts sent 11 men to the plate in the fourth highlighted by a two-run dinger from Wilson Garcia and a two-run double from Quincy McAfee. Starting pitcher Ryan Smith was charged with all seven of those runs, and eight for the game, on 10 hits in only 3.2 innings while taking the loss. The Trash Pandas mustered only four hits. TYLER TURNS TO THE PEN: After a tremendous season out of the rotation that saw him compile a 5-2 record with a 3.42 ERA and a AA-South Pitcher of the Week Award in May, the Angels chose to move Kyle Tyler to the bullpen. The right-hander struck out 72 in 71 innings of work and 13 appearances with 12 starts. However, long term the Angels feel Tyler’s best route for success will be out of the bullpen. He made his first traditional relief appearance (he piggybacked with Rodriguez in a game earlier in the year) on 8/1 against Birmingham and tossed a scoreless ninth inning. He followed that with a 1-2-3 ninth inning on 8/4 against Chattanooga to pick up his first save. He currently has 73 strikeouts, which is ninth in AA-South. LONG BALL LUIS: Infielder Luis Aviles has fit right into the Trash Pandas since joining the club on 6/22. Though his batting average is .250, the Miami, FL native has a penchant for the long ball, delivering 12 dingers in his first 140 at-bats. He went bonkers during the Montgomery series (five games 7/6-7/10) when he ripped six homers and went 8-20, while driving in 11 runs. That included the series finale when he went 0-4 against the Biscuits. He followed that by going 7-42 (.166) over the next two series with two dingers, before going 7-20 through the first five games at Toyota Field against the Barons (7/27-7/31) with more three round-trippers. A career .241 entering this season, Aviles highwater home run mark before 2021 was 2016 when he hit nine in 120 games for low-A Wisconsin of the Brewers organization. The 12 home runs this season have come in only 36 games. READY FOR LAUNCH: The Trash Pandas have lived up to the Rocket City moniker by launching 119 homers, which is tops in AA-South, and second in all of AA. 13 of those dingers came in the 7/20-7/26 series against Tennessee, which is the most in any series this season. Earlier in the year, Rocket City lifted 12 longballs against the Smokies in the 5/11-5/16 series, including two grand slams in the series finale on 5/16. Another 12 came in the series against Montgomery (7/6-7/10) with six provided by infielder Luis Aviles Jr. Third baseman Mitch Nay and rightfielder Izzy Wilson are tied for second in AA- South in homeruns with 17. In fact, the Trash Pandas possess five of the top 10 homerun hitters in AA-South on the team. Former designated hitter Ibandel Isabel and current outfielder Orlando Martinez are tied for seventh with 13 dingers, while infielder Luis Aviles clocks in a tied for tenth at 12. Rocket City became the first AA team to hit 100 homers in 2021 on 7/21 when Brendon Davis slung a solo-homer over the elevator shaft in left field in the seventh inning. TODAY'S STARTING PITCHER: Taking the hill tonight for the Trash Pandas will be former Auburn pitcher Davis Daniel who turned in his best outing as a Trash Panda last Saturday (7/31) against Birmingham. In game two of a doubleheader, Daniel went six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits with 10 strikeouts while suffering the tough-luck, 2-1 loss. It was the third time this season Daniel had reached double digits in strikeouts with the first two coming at high-A Tri-City. Daniel joined Rocket City on 7/4 after a solid partial-season for the Dust Devils. He went 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA in nine starts in 46.2 innings with 64 strikeouts in 46.2 innings. A seventh-round draft choice out of Auburn in 2019, Daniel only pitched two innings as a junior before injuries shut him down. BELL & CO: At the helm for the Trash Pandas in their inaugural campaign is World Series Champion and Gold Glove Award winner Jay Bell. A Major League veteran of over 2,000 career games, Bell was tabbed to lead Rocket City heading into the 2020 season after originally being named Manager on January 7, 2020. Bell spent the previous three seasons managing in the New York Yankees' system and led High-A Tampa (2017), Double-A Trenton (2018), and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (2019) to the playoffs in each season. Joining Bell on the Trash Pandas coaching staff is Pitching Coach Michael Wuertz, who pitched in 421 Major League games for the Chicago Cubs and Oakland A's between 2004-2011. Kenny Hook serves as hitting coach after managing Class-A Short Season Spokane in the Texas organization in 2019. Defensive coach Derek Florko joined the Trash Pandas after working as the hitting coach for High-A Inland Empire in 2019. Rounding out the coaching staff are Strength and Conditioning Coach Andrew Chappell and Athletic Trainer Yusuke Takahashi. PROSPECT RANKINGS: The Trash Pandas' current active roster features five of the Angels’ Top 30 prospects (according to MLB.com): outfielder Orlando Martinez (No. 16), right-handed pitcher Davis Daniel (No. 18), right-handed pitcher Janson Junk (No. 21), right-handed pitcher Elvis Peguero (No. 22), and right-handed pitcher Aaron Hernandez (No. 24). WHAT IS A TRASH PANDA?The name was chosen in a name-the-team contest and is a reference to the area's association with the space industry and the determination and ingenuity of raccoons, aka trash pandas.

Trash Pandas, slang for raccoon, was included in the original 10 nominations following several Brandiose-led focus groups in Madison and Huntsville. The ballot descriptor read: Our community is known for engineering, and no creature in our galaxy is as smart, creative, determined and ingenious a problem solver - dedicated to the challenge at hand - as our local raccoons!

In July 2018, after the results from several focus groups in Madison and Huntsville,10 names were selected, based on their uniqueness and how each name relates to the character-istics of the area: (Alphabetically) Army Ants, Comet Jockeys, GloWorms, Lunartics, Moon Possums, Puffy Head Bird Legs, Space Chimps, Space Sloths, ThunderSharks and Trash Pan-das. The focus groups were led by San Diego-based Brandiose, the Minor League Baseball industry's premiere branding partner.

Over the next few weeks, two rounds of online voting took place. The first round narrowed the list to Comet Jockeys, Moon Pos-sums, Space Chimps, ThunderSharks and Trash Pandas.

Trash Pandas won the final round with 44.75 percent of the vote to ThunderSharks 19.25 percent. Moon Possums was third (12.57 percent); Space Chimps fourth (12.05 percent); and Comet Jockeys fifth (11.38 percent).

By the way, Trash Pandas dominated both rounds.

More than 28,500 nominations and votes were recorded. According to Brandiose, this represented - by far - the largest community participation in a Name the Team contest in the history of Minor League Baseball. The team name was announced in a local microbrewery in September 2018 with nearly 1,500 fans on hand. Trash Pandas was nominated by Matthew Higley of Lacey's Spring, Ala. He received two box seats for the first five seasons and will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Trash Pandas home game. The regional identifier was also chosen by the community. Out of 13,559 votes cast, 67.4 percent chose Rocket City over North Alabama (18.09 percent) and Madison (14.51 percent).

NEW MiLB RULES FOR 2021 Press Release From Major League Baseball - March 11, 2021

Major League Baseball (MLB) announced today the testing of a variety of experimental playing rules at various levels of the Minor Leagues during the upcoming 2021 season. These experimental playing rules have been approved by the Competition Committee and the Playing Rules Committee. MLB will closely monitor and analyze the impact of each rule change throughout the 2021 season and report to Clubs on their effects for further analysis. Consistent with the preferenc-es of our fans, the rule changes being tested are designed to increase action on the basepaths, create more balls in play, improve the pace and length of games, and reduce player injuries.

Below is a summary of the experimental rules that will be tested during the 2021 Minor League season:

Double-A (Defensive Positioning): The defensive team must have a minimum of four players on the infield, each of whom must have both feet completely in front of the outer boundary of the infield dirt. Depending on the preliminary results of this experimental rule change, MLB may require two infielders to be positioned entirely on each side of second base in the second half of the Double-A season. These restrictions on defensive positioning are intended to increase the batting average on balls in play.

NOTEWORTHY THE DANIEL FILE: RHP Davis Daniel will make his fifth Double-A start for Rocket City after beginning the season in the rotation at High-A Tri-City. In his first professional regular season action for the Dust Devils, he went 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA (8 ER/18.2 IP) with 12 walks and 25 strikeouts over four starts in the month of May. In June, he was sensational, going 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA (4 ER/28.0 IP) with a 1.29 ERA (4 ER/28.0 IP) with eight walks and 39 strikeouts. He was named High-A West Pitcher of the Week twice in June (6/13 & 6/27) and was named the league’s Pitcher of the Month after allowing 10 hits in 28.0 innings, holding opponents to a .108 average. In his final High-A start on June 29 at Spokane, he set a career-high with 13 strikeouts. At the time of his promotion to the Trash Pandas on 6/30, he led High-A West in ERA and strikeouts. In his Double-A debut, he gave up two runs over 3.1 innings at Tennessee on July 4. He then gave up four runs at Birmingham on July 14 as the Trash Pandas suffered an 11-5 loss at Regions Field. In his Toyota Field debut, Daniel took the tough luck loss after giving up one run in five innings as Rocket City suffered an 8-3 defeat to Tennessee on July 24. In his last start, he threw his first Double-A quality start but took his second straight loss on July 31 vs. Birmingham. VS. CHATTANOOGA: Making his fifth Double-A start, Daniel will face the Lookouts for the first time in his career tonight at AT&T Field.

MORE NOTES BIG LEAGUE SPRING: Daniel was a non-roster invitee to Angels Major League spring training in 2021 and pitched in two games for Los Angeles, on 3/6 vs. Colorado and 3/18 vs. Milwaukee. His first outing was a scoreless inning against the Rockies with one strikeout before allowing one run on two hits over one inning against the Brewers.

LONG AWAITED DEBUT: The 2021 season is his first regular season action since starting Auburn’s Opening Night game in 2019, when he suffered an elbow injury after 2.0 innings pitched that would require Tommy John surgery. After being drafted by the Angels, he rehabbed at the minor league facilities in Tempe and was not selected to the Angels Player Pool for the 2020 season.

NCAA NOTES: Daniel pitched for Auburn from 2017-19 and went 7-7 with a 5.37 ERA (83 ER/139.0 IP) over 37 games (27 starts) with 58 walks and 135 strikeouts. Despite the injury in 2019, he was able to travel with the team to Omaha for Auburn’s first College World Series appearance since 1997. He was named to the Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2019.

PREVIOUS DRAFTS: Daniel was first drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 34th round of the 2016 draft but chose to attend Auburn. After his sophomore year at Auburn, he was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round in 2018 and elected to return for his junior year. He signed with the Angels in 2019 after being drafted in the seventh round.

SWEET HOME ALABAMA: The promotion to Double-A marks a return close to home for Daniel, who graduated from St. James High School (Montgomery, AL) in 2016. As a senior, he was 11-1 with a 0.70 ERA and also set a school record with 137 strikeouts in 70 innings.
