    Roenis Elias | LHP | #2910 GS - 2-5, 3.21 ERA

    HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-2, 178 Born:8-1-88 (24) in Guantanamo,CuRESIDES: Austin, TX College: N/AOBTAINED: Signed as a Minor League free agent on May 3, 2011

Tonights Start: 24-year-old Roenis Elias makes his 11th start for the Gener-ls in the opener of the series vs. Chattanooga. This is his 45th overall start inis pro career. Jackson is 3-7 in his starts this season despite his 3.21 ERA in

    hose games.

Last Outing: Suffered the loss last Thursday in Jacksons 6-3 loss at home to Montgomery...allowed 6 runs, 4arned on 7 hits in 5.1 innings, striking out 6 and walking 4 in his 10th start of the year.

PERSONAL: ROW-nes eh-LEE-us...Defected from Cuba in 2010. When he was in Cuba, he pitched for the Guan-

anamo team and last pitched there in 2010. Left Cuba on a boat with 16 other Cubans. It landed in Cancun, Mex-co. The boat which was organized by people Elias said he did not know departed without a problem. For theext 30 hours, Elias and the other passengers sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, braving the high seas and hoping

hey were not caught by authorities in international waters that would send them back to Cuba. Finally, with a back-ack full of clothes as his only possession, Elias landed in Cancun, Mexico he was ofcially a Cuban defector.

While the rst step of successfully escaping Cuba was completed, things did not necessarily get easier for Elias. He was now in a foreign country without a visa, did not have a baseball team to play for and had no way of gettingo the U.S. Elias said he and the ve other baseball players on the boat laid low in a hotel room in Cancun, bidingheir time until they could get the paperwork necessary to be in Mexico a process Elias declined to elaboraten. Once the proper paperwork was acquired, he traveled nearly 1,600 miles to Monterrey, Mexico, where he had tryout with the local professional team. He didnt get cut, but he didnt exactly make the team either. Monterreyad an A team for its top players, and a B team for its less talented group. Elias was placed on the B team and

old he didnt have a chance to be signed by a Major League franchise. Undeterred, Elias nished out the seasonnd spent the offseason in Monterrey working out and improving. He attended one open tryout where a few Majoreague scouts were present but received no offers. He attended a second open tryout in May of 2011, and thisme he caught the eye of a Seattle Mariners scout. He was signed on May 3 and made his U.S. debut on July 17n rookie ball, more than eight months after climbing onto a tiny boat and leaving the only home hed ever known.

    013 Season:

Tossed six no-hit innings in his season-debut on April 5 at Jacksonville.Earned rst win of the season on 4/27 at CHA

012 Season: went 11-6 with a 3.76 ERA (62 ER, 148.1 IP) in 26 starts with High Desert. He joined John Patterson (2.83) and Brad Penny (2.96) in 1998 and Luis Galindez (3.87) in 1992. Elias 11 wineason currently ranks T8th in a single season by a Mavericks pitcher. Elias led the team with 12 quality starts including 6 of his nal 8 starts of the season. Dhis 8 game stretch, from July 16-Aug. 31, he went 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA (13 ER, 50.0 IP).
