Either Staal or Whitney had led theHurricanes in scoring in each of the last four seasons, as the pair combined for 603 points (251g, 352a) from 2005-06 through 2008-09.Their 251 combined goals accounted for nearly 25 percent of Carolina’s goal scoring during that time frame.·         Back-to-Back Games: Saturday’s game marks the second game of Carolina’s fifth of 16 sets of back-to-back games thisseason. Carolina is 1-7-1 in back-to-back games this season, including a 1-4-0 record in the first halves and an 0-3-1 record in the backhalves. The Hurricanes next face a back-to-back situation on Nov. 27-28 when they host Atlanta before traveling to Buffalo.·         Road Struggles: The Hurricanes are winless in their first eight road games this season, posting a record of 0-6-2, to make themthe only team in the NHL without an away victory this season. The deepest the team has ever gone into its road schedule withoutearning a victory was in 1981-82, when the Whalers didn’t win an away contest until the 12th road game, a 5-3 win at Toronto on Dec.2, 1981. The franchise record for fewest road wins in a season was set in the team’s first NHL season, 1979-80, when Hartford postedjust five road wins in 40 games.·         Killers Heating Up: After allowing seven goals during their first 16 penalty kill situations of the season, the Hurricanes have nowkilled off 52 of their last 59 (88.1%) shorthanded situations. Carolina got its first shorthanded goal of the season on Oct. 9 againstFlorida, as Tom Kostopoulos netted an unassisted, shorthanded tally for his first goal with the team. Last season, the Hurricanes did notscore a shorthanded goal until Jan. 29, the team’s 50th game of the season.·         Powerless: The Hurricanes are 0-for-their-last-25 over the last five games on the power-play, dropping their season power-playpercentage to 13.4 percent.·         Tough Start: With just seven points (2-10-3) in their first 15 games, the Hurricanes’ start to 2009-10 matches the worst infranchise history. The franchise also managed just seven points through 15 games in 1992-93, and 1993-94. Carolina’s current 11-game winless streak matches the longest winless streak since the team’s arrival in North Carolina (3/13/03-4/6/03: 0-9-2). The longestwinless streak in franchise history was a 14-game stretch from Jan. 4, 1992 through Feb. 9, 1992 (0-8-6).·         Workhorse: Hurricanes netminder Cam Ward has started 14 of the team’s 15 games this season. Ward also started 28 of 29regular-season games to conclude the 2008-09 season, and played all 18 of Carolina’s Stanley Cup playoff games.·         Home Sweet Home: The Canes are in the midst of a stretch that will see them play six of nine, and eight of 12 games at theRBC Center from Oct. 28-Nov. 15. Carolina is 2-4-1 at home thus far this season.·         Average Joe: Prior to last night’s games, defenseman Joe Corvo ranked fifth among all NHL skaters, averaging 26:10 of ice timeper game in Carolina’s first 14 games.·         Contact Sport: Signed as a free agent this summer to add another physical presence to the Carolina blueline, defensemanAndrew Alberts ranked tied for 12th in the NHL in hits (44) through games of Nov. 5.
