EARLY STAFF MEETINGDrew Stafford is tied for second on the Sabres with seven goals, but five of those have been the first goal scored in a game. That’sgood for third in the league, trailing only the 7 curtain raisers scored by Alex Ovechkin, and 6 from Jarome Iginla. Stafford scored 20goals last season, and four were the first scored in a game. MILLER STOPS EM’ COLDRyan Miller posted his 15th career shutout on Nov. 30 with a 3-0 win in Toronto, and now has sole possession of third place on the all-time franchise list. Next on Miller’s radar is Martin Biron at 18, and Dominik Hasek on top with 55. Miller already has 3 SO’s this season, two short of the career-best 5 he finished with in 59 games last season.  SECOND TO NONE With a record of 10-0-0, the Sabres are among eight undefeated teams when leading after two periods this season. FIVE MORE NOTES NO MEDIA PERSON SHOULD BE WITHOUT Going streaking –Washington carries a six-game winning streak into Wednesday’s game, its second six-game streak of the seasonand the longest active streak in the league. The Capitals are the only team in the NHL with two winning streaks of six games or morethis season. A win in Buffalo would match the Capitals’ longest winning streaks under head coach Bruce Boudreau and the longest bythe team since 1985-86. Four of those wins have come on the road; a win in Buffalo would match the longest road winning streak for Washington since the1983-84 team won a club-record six straight away from home. Marching two by two –Six Capitals have combined to produce at least one multiple-goal game in each of its last five games (EricFehr, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, Tomas Fleischmann, Mike Green and Alex Ovechkin). On the season nine Capitals havecombined for 22 two-goal games, but no hat tricks yet. No other team has more than six players with multiple-goal games or 12multiple-goal games total.  Plus 8 –Alex Ovechkin scored two goals Monday night in his first game back after a two-game NHL suspension. Ovechkin, who leadsthe league in points per game (1.45) and goals per game (0.91) is just one goal off the NHL goal-scoring lead despite missing eightgames. Ovechkin has points in each of the last six games he has played (5g-3a, +5) and leads the league with seven multiple-goalgames. He also leads the league by scoring the first goal of the game seven times and has scored the Caps’ first goal in 10 of the 22games he has played. Blank stare –Semyon Varlamov has posted two shutouts in his last four games and, dating back to the playoffs, has four shutouts inhis last 28 games. He is 7-0-2 with a 1.53 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage in his last nine appearances and hasbeen one of the three stars in four of his last six games. Varlamov’s 12-1-2 record gives him the best points percentage in the NHL andmakes him 16-1-3 in his career. Improving D –Thanks to improved team defense and the play of Semyon Varlamov and Jose Theodore in goal the Capitals haveallowed two goals or less in seven of their last eight games. Washington has improved to 10th in the league in team defense, allowing2.67 goals per game. SERIES NOTES –Washington trails, 36-76-15-2, entering the 130th meeting, including 18-40-6-0 in Buffalo–Semyon Varlamov had a 25-save shutout in the first meeting, Nov. 25 in Washington–The Capitals won last year's season series, 2-1-1 (Buffalo was 2-2-0)–The Sabres were one of two teams to shut out the Caps last season (5-0, 11/1/08 in BUF)–Washington is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings but had lost six in a row prior to that–The Capitals do not have any former Sabres on their roster; Buffalo features former Capital Mike Grier and two former Capitals draftpicks (Tim Kennedy and Nathan Paetsch) MORE CAPS NOTES Start me up –Washington has only trailed after the first period twice this year, both against the New York Islanders and both times theCapitals came back to win. The Capitals have outscored their opponents 39-14 in the first period; they lead the league in goals in thefirst period and are tied with Chicago for the fewest allowed. Caps goaltenders have a .952 save percentage in the first period.  Washington has scored at least one goal in the first period of 25 of their 30 games (outscoring opponents 17-5 in the last 10 games).Washington has scored first in 23 of 30 games this year. In the rare occasions that the Capitals have allowed the first goal they are 5-0-2. Fehr warning –Eric Fehr carries a career-best seven-game point-scoring streak (5g-5a) and finished November as the Capitals’leading goal scorer in the month (six). Fehr’s eight goals on the year (20 GP) are two-thirds of his total from last season (12 in 61 GP).In 14 games since returning from injury Fehr has posted seven goals and seven assists with a +9 rating. He has only had one minusgame all season. Seeking 20 –The Capitals are seeking their 20th victory in their 31st game, which would be two games ahead of last season’s pace(20-10-3). The only Capitals team to reach 20 wins faster was in 1991-92 (started 20-8-0). Leadership qualities –The Capitals are the only team in the NHL with four 10-plus goal scorers. Six teams, including the Sabres, don’thave a single 10-goal scorer.

Division doings –Washington, which has won consecutive Southeast Division titles, is 7-0-0 against the Southeast Division, the onlyteam in the NHL with a perfect record against its own division. Power surge –After a six-game stretch in which the Capitals scored one power-play goal, they are 8-for-23 (34.8%) in the last threegames. They lead the league at 24.4% on the power play. The Capitals have had a 23.5% power play since Bruce Boudreau was hired(167-for-712). Back it up –Nicklas Backstrom’s five-point game Saturday night –the first by a Capital since his five-point game 11/15/08 at NewJersey –gave him the team lead in points with 33. It’s the first time that a player other than Alex Ovechkin has led the team in scoringthis late in a season since the 2003-04 season.  Going Green –Mike Green and the Rangers’ Marian Gaborik are the only players in the NHL with two point streaks of eight-plus gamesthis season; he has points in 19 of his last 24 games, including four points Saturday night that matched his career high. He leads allNHL defensemen with 30 points in 29 games. Multiplication table –Alexander Semin shares the Capitals lead with 10 multiple-point games, outings that account for 24 of his 25points. He has three straight multiple-point games (2g-6a) after missing seven games due to injury. After you …–Washington has trailed at some point in 15 games this year and has won more than half of them (8-5-3). The Capitals are5-0-2 when their opponent scores first.  Always in it –Washington has held a lead in the second period or later in 29 of its 30 games. They have led at some point in all 30. Star power –Alex Ovechkin has been named one of the three stars of the game in 13 of his 22 games this season, was one of theNHL's three stars of the week twice in a four-week span and was the league’s No. 2 star in October.  ONE-TIMERS –Washington has beaten Tampa Bay 12 straight times, the longest winning streak against one team in franchise history–The Capitals are 12-1 in games decided by more than one goal–The Capitals are 10-0-3 when Alex Ovechkin scores and 7-0-1 when Brooks Laich scores; when both score they are 3-0-0–The Capitals scored their first shorthanded goal of the year last Thursday night (Matt Bradley)–Tom Poti had two assists, including the 300th point of his NHL career, in his return from injury Saturday night–Bruce Boudreau’s autobiography, Gabby: Confessions of a Hockey Lifer, was released Oct. 31–Alex Ovechkin has 118 career goals at home and 121 career goals on the road–Alex Ovechkin hasn’t been held without a point in consecutive games since Jan. 6-9, 2009 (61 GP since)–Alex Ovechkin became just the third player in history and the first in 27 years to record three points in each of the first three games ofthe season (joining Guy Lafleur, 1975-76, and Peter Stastny, 1982-83)–Two of the five youngest goaltenders to see action in the NHL this season have played for Washington (Michal Neuvirth, SemyonVarlamov, both 21)
