THE CUP

1ROUND

2ROUND3ROUND4ROUND

THE ROAD to

Halifax has not had an easy road to the cup this playoff sea-son but the key addition of Chuck McCloud and Thomas Ronané into the lineup at the trade deadline seems to have

given the Hawks just what they have needed this post-season. In the first round, the Hawks faced a Tampa Bay team limping into this years’ post-season. With 4 key players out of the line-up for the Lightning the Hawks were able to coast to a 4-1 se-ries win. The second round proved to be much more challeng-ing for the Hawks as the defense just couldn’t seem to figure out the Habs offensive style for much of the series. Howev-

er, for game 7 a different team showed up to play and willed their team to a gritty 1-0 win in front of a packed RBC Centre. The conference final against the Boston Bruins got off to a very rocky start as the Bruins took games 1 & 2 on their home ice. However, down 1-0 early in the 3rd period of game 3 some-thing changed on the bench and a fire was lit. The Hawks scored 2 goals within thirty seconds of one another and also tallied an empty netter late in the game to win 3-1 on home ice. After rallying in game 3, the Hawks dominated the rest of the series winning the next 3 games to take the series 4-2 over Boston. The Hawks now face the greatest test this franchise has ever en-dured, game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. After a quick 3-1 series lead, the Hawks dropped the next two games to force a crucial game 7 at the RBC Centre to decide who gets to drink from the cup. Can the Hawks bring the first championship to Halifax? We’ll have to wait and see but one thing’s for certain, the home fans sure won’t make it easy for the Stars to leave with any hardware from Halifax.

People who live by principles usually come out on top. Candace Blackburn sure did. After walking away from college to help her

ailing mother, she hooked up with her former classmate in college, Stuart Macelby, in the restaurant business. Macelby had just opened up his first franchised Planet Organic in Halifax and Blackburn took her life savings ($4,744) and invested it with Bradshaw to formulate Dupree’s restaurant chain.

On June 22, 1989 Dupree’s had made it to the big league (New York Stock Exchange) and had seen themselves come quite some distance from the time they had opened up their first Planet Organic in 1981. Blackburn would later become the CEO of Niko Corporation, an empire raking in over $3.7 billion in annual sales, operating over 1500 restaurants and overseeing 100,000 employees. Niko Corporation would become the largest publicly held company based in Nova Scotia.

In 2003, Candace Blackburn realized a long sought after dream come true at the age of fifty-one when she became the first female owner of an NHL franchise. Once again Blackburn proved her principles, work ethic, and business savvy. Originally purchased for $30 million, Blackburn turned the Hawks into a financial success with a team value at $307 million in 2012.

This is one of the reasons that I and so many other blue collar working class fans have so much respect for Candace Blackburn. She hasn’t forgotten where she came from and because she knows the value of a hard earned dollar she doesn’t assume on or feel entitled to the hard earnings of taxpayers to fund stadiums built for entertainment. Her father, Jon Blackburn, was a barber and her mother Cecilia Blackburn worked at a department store while little Candace was growing up in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Later, she would take her humble upbringing and transfer it into becoming a humble person as she was known to roll up her sleeves and work alongside the other employees of the restaurants she owned.

Her biggest charitable contributions have gone to cancer research and to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Blackburn, who’s son was afflicted and overcame bone cancer 16 years ago has made it her personal goal to do everything within her power to help in the fight against cancer. She is well known for her fundraisers and utilization of the Halifax Red Hawks in Make-A-Wish benifits. Her son is now the executive vice-president of player operations for the team.

In 2010 Yahoo! Sports selected Candace Blackburn as the third best NHL owner out of 32 teams. In the opinion of Hawk Nation, Blackburn is #1, albeit based on personal bias and less than forthcoming criteria. Blackburn is a winner both on the ice and off the ice. She is know for her charitable and civic efforts and was awarded the Order of Nova Scotia, the highest civic recognition that the province of Nova Scotia issues.

A&Qwith Hawks star Niklas Frohlander

HOW MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE ARE YOU IN YOUR OWN SKIN AS CAPTAIN NOW THAN THREE YEARS AGO?

Niklas Fröhlander: There are a lot of responsi-bilities with being a captain in the locker room. I feel like I can handle those a little bit better now whereas before I was just making sure I was ready to play. The more comfortable you can get the more you can handle. And it al-ways helps to have the same leaders around like Chuck McCloud, Steve Ashford and Alexi Travnikov. Guys like that. The list goes on of guys who kind of know their place. Everyone how has a role and their own job to do. It’s a team game, everyone helps each other out.

WHAT HAS TO GO RIGHT, BESIDES HEALTH, FOR YOU OR ALEXEI TRAVNIKOV TO WIN THE CUP?

Fröhlander: A lot has to go right, obviously. Health is one of them. It is a goal that both of us want to reach. It’s one of those things if you can do it, it proves you’re one of those really elite players. But you can’t think of that ultimate thing at the start of the season. You just have to go out there and play and take it one game at a time and Trav and I are going to work hard and be the best that we can be. If the cup happens, it happens.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR BUDDY TRAVNIKOV FIGHT IN A GAME ONE TIME? HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY TO SEE THAT?

Fröhlander: I don’t want to see that. I want to see him comfy on the bench or serving out penalties the way he normally does. Let’s keep it that way.

OTHER THAN FROM THE MAIN CORE WHO IS YOUR PICK TO CLICK? WHO IS THE BREAKOUT GUY?

Fröhlander: I’d have to say it’s a toss-up be-tween guys like Thomas Ronané, Evan Kennedy, and Steve Ashford. I think they are three very skilled, left-hand shots. They all have speed, they’ve got strength and I think those are guys that can be really big for us this year. They’ll assume a role and they know when they get the chance they have to go out there and do something. They have the talent to do it.

WHO IS YOUR KRYPTONITE ON DEFENSE ON ANOTHER TEAM?

Fröhlander: No one, really. Zdeno Chara?

WHAT ABOUT A GOALIE WHO GIVES YOU TROUBLES AND YOU THINK YOU HAVE TO DO THE LITTLE THINGS ON A GIVEN NIGHT WHEN YOU FACE HIM?

Fröhlander: No one comes to mind.

FOR THE TEAM THIS SEASON, WHAT WOULD BE UNACCEPTABLE FOR NIKLAS FRÖHLANDER?

Fröhlander: At this time of year winning the cup is everyone’s goal. You have to take it one step at a time.

MCDONOUGH

We had three or four outdoor rinks on our block. I was on

skates a lot of times all day long. Road hockey, street hockey, in the basement, in the hallway. I always had a hockey stick.

The Boston Bruins were definitely my team growing up. I was always Eddie Shore playing road hockey. Everybody was either the Canadiens — because I went to a French school — the Leafs or Detroit. Maybe because nobody had Boston, I was Boston.

In minor hockey or junior hockey I always dreamed like that. When you get to juniors, you get a clear idea how close it could be.

I just loved the game, had fun with it and I was kind of a different player. I played defense and forward. Sometimes it looked like I was a scorer, and I wasn’t a scorer. I was pretty lucky the way things all evolved.

John Rolinski was probably the one guy who influenced me the most when I turned pro. He helped my overall game and my approach to the game. I was fortunate to be around John, too, when I was a head coach the first

THE BENCH BOSStime. He was one of our assistants. He helped me in a lot of ways about the game and around the game.

You look back to the days when we saw the building was full and alive. It had all the personality in the world, and then you saw what happened in recent years, which wasn’t good for Hawks hockey or hockey in general. It’s nice to feel it again.

I was very comfortable and very happy doing what I was doing. I was nice and relaxed. I thought it was going to be healthy just to sit back and absorb some games and take the year off.

That was tough. It wasn’t easy. I feel for Denis, and I know what it’s like when it happens. It’s a terrible feeling. I’m very respectful for the position and what people have to go through both ways. I try to look at it moving ahead

knowing it’s a great opportunity and great challenge.

Coaching is the next-best fun in the game because you’re actually involved and you’re hands-on, you’re on the ice and you’re with the guys. Winning and losing is fun. Seeing players absorb the information you try to extend and you see them apply it and it works ... with a young team like this, it’s a great situation.

I like our team in a lot of ways. I like the way we’re together. We have a young team that will stick together, and it’s a good bunch of guys.

There’s a process. Right now our process is to try to win the cup. We should welcome that challenge.

It’s about them, it’s not about me.
