PPPPRESIDENT’S WELCOMERESIDENT’S WELCOMERESIDENT’S WELCOMERESIDENT’S WELCOME

Once again, welcome to Invercharron Games, the last Traditional Highland

Games of the season. Our Games committee, Michael, Sally, Alison, Ian,

Caroline, John, Carol, Elissa, Kay and Yvonne work very hard throughout the

year to bring you a great event and I am very grateful to our extremely

hardworking and tireless members for their efforts.

The Invercharron Games began in 1888 and were revived in 1981 and have

been running annually since, with 1 exception. The Invercharron Games’

opening ceremony, includes the performance of the ‘Beating of the Targe’.

The origin of the Targe has been lost in the mists of time, but history records

it being used in Greek battles. Scottish history relates it being used at the

Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 by Robert the Bruce and his clansmen and it

was also used at the Battle of Culloden in 1745. The warrior Targe had a

boss to which was attached a metal spike of about 6 to 8 inches long making

it a formidable weapon in hand-to-hand combat. Many clans have their own

design on their Targe which was originally beaten to call the clansmen to

discussions on how to benefit the lives of each member, as well as a call to

arms to safeguard the land, its people and all of the clansmen’s belongings.

The Invercharron Targe is made from wood, covered in deerskin and was

studded in 1981 by one of the committee members. The sword used in our

ceremony was presented by a past president, Ian Brinklow.

Our athletes look forward to these Games in a relaxed and informal

environment, although the competition is extremely keen and well

contested. As usual our presenter Mr Ian Robb will keep everyone informed

of the action throughout the day so you need not miss anything. This year

our local Heavy athlete Jason Young has announced that this will be his final

year for competing. We wish him well for the future and thank him sincerely

for his loyalty and the great skill and entertainment he has given us over

many years. Thanks Jason and we look forward to seeing you and your family

next year as spectators, you are always welcome.

We are delighted to welcome the Rev. Susan Brown, Minister of Dornoch

Cathedral and Queen’s Chaplain as our Chieftain this year. She will be ably

assisted by Junior Chieftains Hamish Munro and Jessica McCulloch from local

primary schools. We sincerely thank them all for agreeing to join us. We are

also pleased to welcome three visiting TV film crews this year. The crew

from West4Media Austrian TV, filming a documentary on specific athletes

competing in ‘unusual sports’. They are focusing on the heavy athletes; The

GTV film crew from Taiwan and the Gala TV Corporation from China. All will

be filming throughout the day with at least two presenters being given a

Master class in Heavy Sports and then trying their hand at competing.

3

We will be royally entertained by the Gizzen Briggs Traditional Scottish Music

band from Tain Royal Academy. Come and listen, dance if you want to and

enjoy these hugely talented young people. You can continue dancing at the

Traditional Scottish Family Ceilidh later (see back for details).

Last year we welcomed visitors from over 20 countries including Australia;

USA; Canada; Austria; Switzerland; Hungry; Denmark; France; Germany;

Slovenia; Netherlands; Alaska; Norway; Spain; Japan; China and many more.

This year we look forward to once again welcoming many more local,

national and international visitors and hope that you all have a fun filled,

action-packed day with many wonderful memories. Soon we will be

launching a new and improved website so please feel free to send us copies

of your photographs for our website gallery, we would love to include them.

Also please visit our team in the Secretary’s tent to sign our Visitors Book for

2015.

The Committee would like to thank all of our many local sponsors, without

whose regular support the Games would not be possible. This year we have

also been successful in gaining additional funding support from The Big

Lottery, Awards for All; The Hugh Fraser Foundation and the Hector Gordon

Russell Trust and we are very grateful to everyone. We, on the Committee

once again extend our sincere thanks to Mr Peter Campbell for use of the

Games Field this year and to Mr Hugh Murray of Migdale Smolts and Migdale

Transport for his financial sponsorship and the printing of our programmes.

Thanks too go to SSE Community At Heart project for helping with the setting

and erection of the games field.

This year sincere thanks also go to Gordon and Calum Smart for their superb

carpentry skills used in their sponsorship and making of our new Winners

Podium and the dancing boards. Thanks boys – great job. Our thanks too to

our judges, officials and the many volunteers who support the Games and, of

course, the Tain Pipe Band, and our many fabulous athletes, pipers and

dancers, all of whom make the Games as successful as they are. We hope

you all have a great day and enjoy the wide range of sports, athletic

performances, displays of strength and the amazing piping and dancing you

will be treated to. Why not test your strength and enter the Strongman or

Strongwoman competitions taking place at 2pm, all are very welcome? The

annual Children’s Art competition entries are displayed in the Catering Tent

and presentation of prizes will take place at 2pm. Please also take time to

visit and enjoy the many trade stands and other attractions on offer, not

forgetting the catering and Drinks facilities spread across the field.

A hundred thousand welcomes –Ceud Mille Failté Michael BairdMichael BairdMichael BairdMichael Baird President

TAIN PIPE BANDTAIN PIPE BANDTAIN PIPE BANDTAIN PIPE BAND

This year, we welcome once

again the Tain Pipe Band to

the Games and thank them

for coming to entertain us at

these Invercharron Games.

They are an integral and always enjoyed part of the

Games opening ceremony and on-going

entertainment throughout the afternoon. For many years pre-war (1920’s-30’s)

the band was known as the Boy Scouts Pipe Band, but in the 1930s became the

Tain Burgh Pipe Band. The Band went into abeyance in 1939 for the duration of

the war and was resurrected in 1946 by old members and newcomers. In 1950

the British Legion took over the band to be called the Tain BL Pipe Band. Donald

Ross was Pipe Major and led an 18-20 strong band. P.M. Willie Morrison later

took over as Pipe Major. The band went defunct in 1956 and uniforms were

badly stored. In 1995 a number of individual pipers and drummers playing as a

group at various local venues, set up a committee and formed The Royal Burgh

of Tain Pipe Band. Raising funds proved hard until uniforms and drums were

provided by Mohammed Al Fayed (Harrods) in 1996. The object of the band is to

promote an interest in Pipe Band Music in the area, to entertain people and

visitors, and especially, to encourage the younger generation to build up an

interest in music and their heritage.

GIZZEGIZZEGIZZEGIZZENNNN BRIGGSBRIGGSBRIGGSBRIGGS Gizzen Briggs are a Scottish traditional Music group from Tain Royal Academy

who have been in existence now for over 20 years. They rehearse every week

and regularly perform at numerous local ceilidhs and charity events. To date

they have made 6 CDs, and were delighted to be awarded “Community Project

of the Year” at the 2013 Scots Trad awards.

22

CHIEFTAIN AND JUNIOR CHIEFTAINS

REV. SUSAN BROWN - CHIEFTAIN

Susan has been Chaplain to the Queen in Scotland since 2011

and also Minister of Dornoch Cathedral since 1998. Susan has

lived in the Highlands all her working life, although she was born

and raised just outside Edinburgh and studied at Edinburgh

University. Susan is married to Derek and they have two grown

up children. Both Susan and Derek served on the local lifeboat

for many years. Now however, life is much more sedate with

dog walking and golf as pastimes, burning (a few) calories to

make room for the cooking and bread-making she enjoys.

JESSICA McCULLOCH – JUNIOR CHIEFTAIN

Jessica is 12 years old and likes to be as active as possible. She is a

member of East Sutherland Athletics Club, and is particularly keen

on running longer distances such as 3km, or 5km. She loves doing

the Cross-country races in the winter months. Jessica hopes to be

the first junior chieftain to do the hill race!! Jessica also likes

gymnastics and dancing and has recently joined Jan Trumble's

dance troupe. She spends hours practising her cartwheels and

tumbling. Jessica also likes to spend time on the trampoline,

usually with her big sister. Jessica likes most subjects at school

but English is her favourite. She also likes being creative which includes using

Apps on her phone to create Instagram edits. She is really looking forward to

moving up to Tain Royal Academy this year because of all the different subjects

she can do. She is also looking forward to making lots and lots of new friends.

Jessica's mum is a community nurse, and her dad is a ghillie. She has one sister

who is older than her and is going into 5th year in Tain.

HAMISH MUNRO – JUNIOR CHIEFTAIN

Hamish Munro lives in Altass near Rosehall with his parents, older

brother Cameron (17), sister Annie Rose (16) and twin sister Jessie,

they recently celebrated their 12th birthday. Hamish attended the

Gaelic medium class at Bonar Bridge Primary and will shortly be

moving up to Tain Royal Academy. Hamish recently took part in the

local Mod held in Bonar Bridge where he did very well and won
