The Frank Lloyd Wright designed performing arts center located on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University is one of the largest university-based presenters of performing arts in the world and top touring market for Broadway. Welcome Friends,

ON Media Publications grew up in the theater. Chapter One of ourcompany’s story began with a handful of performing arts groups inSouthern Arizona. The plot was simple. We would take on the financialresponsibility of publishing their program books to allow them to directtheir endless talent and limited resources to what they do best, createmagic on the stage. During our nearly four decades in operation, weexpanded from that original handful (still happily with us!) to serve asthe publisher of more than 30 visitor guides, program books and golfspectator guides.

A unique new partnership which launched this summer is with Eight,Arizona PBS, publishing the monthly Eight Magazine. We are thrilledto welcome Eight as our newest member of ON Media partners. Staytuned for more exciting news as this friendship develops.

With our roots in the theater, we have learned a lot about strongperformances. While backstage, the ON Media team has picked upa number of lessons that help guide our company; speak clearly,hit your marks, keep your eye on the spotlight, don’t upstage yourcolleagues and you are only as good as your last performance. This isinvaluable advice for all of us as we build ON Media’s reputation...oneperformance at a time.

A noteworthy moment at this year’s Tony Awards was Cyndi Lauper’swin for Best Original Score, for her musical “Kinky Boots.” I havealways admired her for her ability to make everything she does seemlike fun. In her acceptance speech, my admiration increased as theshow-biz veteran acknowledged the hard working ensemble behindthe award, “My wonderful team, you guys inspire me.”

MILITARY FAMILY FIRSTNIGHTS Each year, more than100 family members of deployedmilitary personnel annually receive tickets toattend three Broadway performances. Thesefamilies serve our nation at home, while lovedones are serving abroad and in order to honorthat sacrifice this program provides them withexclusive opportunities including a meet-and-greet with the cast. The Military FamilyFirst Nights program was conceived by ASUGammage Executive Director Colleen Jennings-Roggensack. As a daughter of a career militaryfather, Colleen distinctly remembers trips to NewYork with her mother to get standing room onlytickets to Broadway, opera and the ballet. Todate, the Military Family First Nights programhas provided nearly 2,500 tickets to militaryfamilies, active duty military and veterans.Military Family First Nights are made possiblein part by additional funding provided by ArizonaLottery and The Broadway League.

HEROES NIGHT This annual pre-show eventhonors veterans and active duty military andincludes special guests, giveaways and a show ofpatriotism that will warm the soul. The following article was written by ASUGammage VIPs Bill and Sue Ahearn.A great university needs a great theater. That’s thequick reason for our support of ASU Gammage.There was no better place for a formal date whenwe first met. Great Broadway shows and a widevariety of concerts and other performances; allin a magnificent theater. ASU Gammage was justseven years old then and pretty classy for a youngcouple. Suits and cocktail dresses were the customfor theater then. As we planned to marry, seasontickets were in those plans.We still have those season tickets, though we’vemoved up from row 26. Broadway is better thanever, and we look forward to each season withexcitement. It’s still a great place for today’s young(and not-so-young) couples to have a formal date.We want to make sure that they have the ASUGammage that we have enjoyed for 40 years.That’s why we became donors years ago and,in recent years, provided for a bequest to ASUGammage in our estate plan.As we have become more involved with ASUGammage, we have learned that ticket salesonly cover a fraction of the cost to operate andmaintain the theater. Private philanthropy isneeded to maintain the structure, especially asit approaches its 50th Anniversary in 2014.Furthermore, Frank Lloyd Wright couldnot have imagined the technological

Whileworking for Livent, he managed productions suchas Fosse, Ragtime, Show Boat, Music of the Nightand Kiss of the Spider Woman. Mr. Buck was astage manager for more than 20 years, survivinga year with Mary Martin and Carol Channing inJimmy Kirkwood’s Legends!, a year in Japan withSiegfried&Roy,openingThePhantomof theOperaMusic Box Company and opening Show Boat onBroadway. Since beginning as an apprentice withThe Kenley Players in the late 60s, he has had theprivilege of working closely with visionaries suchas Twyla Tharp, Susan Stroman, Hal Prince, JoeLayton and Josh Logan, plus hundreds of stars. Mr.Buck had the privilege of recently serving on theboard for the National Alliance of Music Theater.Randy is currently living happily-ever-after in the

Washington, DC area with his wife, Angela, andtheir daughter Sierra Ashley Buck.

MICHAEL J. ORSINO (Chief OperatingOfficer) has enjoyed nearly a decade workingwith Troika Entertainment. He first joined thecompany on the road as stage manager and lateras company manager. Productions include SouthPacific, Saturday Night Fever, The Sound ofMusic (US and Asian Tours), and CATS. Agraduate of DeSales University, Mr. Orsinohas also worked at venues ranging fromthe Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival to BuschGardens in Williamsburg, VA. After his manyyears on the road, he is pleased to have settleddown in Maryland with his wife, Anissa, a fellowTroika tour veteran and their son, Cameron.

DONALD KINDL (Chief Financial Officer)graduated from the University of Connecticutwith a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountingin 1982 and again in 1988 with his Masters inBusiness Administration. He began his careerwith Combustion Engineering in Windsor, CT in1982, and moved to Maryland in 1992 to assumethe position of Comptroller for various theatricalproductions. In his current position he overseesthe daily operations of all aspects of finance andmanagement information systems. Mr. Kindl andhis lovely wife, Cindy, are the proud parents of threewonderful children: Stephen, Stacey and Scott.

A CONVERSATION WITH BEST-SELLING AUTHORSDAVE BARRY AND RIDLEY PEARSON

How did a thriller writer and a newspaper columnistknown for booger jokes come to write a prequel toPeter Pan?DAVE: It happened because of music. Or somethingvaguely like music, anyway. Back in 1992, Ridleyand I became founding members of the Rock BottomRemainders, a band of authors that included StephenKing, Amy Tan, Matt Groening, Barbara Kingsolverand others. We had a great time, and we becamefriends, and we kept on playing together. In 2003, theband was playing at the Miami Book Fair, and Ridleywas staying at my house. At breakfast one morning, hetold me he had an idea.RIDLEY: I’d been reading Peter Pan with our five-year-old daughter when she’d asked me, “How didPeter meet Captain Hook in the first place?” Thatgot me thinking. How did the boy learn to fly? Whydid he never grow old? How could he detach fromhis shadow, and why would he need to? Dave and Ithought we might be able to combine his humor andmy suspense to tell an adventure story about a boy whobecame Peter Pan. But writing a book is hard enoughwhen flying solo. How would two people collaborate towrite a single story? We encountered some “technicaldifficulties” right away: I am an outliner. Dave is moreseat of the pants.DAVE: Ridley believed -- this is going to sound crazy --that we should figure out the plot of the book BEFOREwe wrote it. So we spent a few weeks figuring out howto make a boy fly, and where Tinker Bell might havecome from, and why there’s a Never Land, among

other things. We ended up with a story that made usboth happy. We wrote the book by a process we called“ping pong.” One of us would write a chapter andemail it to the other guy, who would change whateverhe wanted, then email the result back. Then the first guymight change it some more, and so on. We originallythought we’d write a short book, maybe 100 pages. Weended up with Peter and the Starcatchers, which wasmore than 450 pages long, and which was on the Timesbestseller list for almost a year. Writing that book withRidley was the most fun I’ve ever had in this business.Seeing Rick Elice, Roger Rees and Alex Timbers turn itinto a Broadway play—a fantastic Broadway play—isbeyond anything either of us ever imagined.RIDLEY: Two years later I sat down on my daughter’sbed and reminded her of the question she’d asked melong ago. I pulled out a 450 page manuscript. Hereyes went wide. “Uncle Dave” and I had come upwith a possible answer to her question about Peterand Hook. I suggested we read it together during herbedtime reading hour. We ended up not only reading,but laughing. Eight years passed and I walked withboth our daughters along 47th Street approachinga brightly lit, colorful marquee: PETER AND THESTARCATCHER. On Broadway. My daughtersclutched my arms a little tighter and together wemelded into the swarming crowd. I thought to myself,there really is such a thing as magic.PETER AND THE STARCATCHER bringsits magic to ASU Gammage January 14-19,2014. Patricia Langlin-Brazil (Pat) and her latehusband George have been personal supportersof ASU Gammage since 2001.
