Distance from the main road (highway) and the big urban centres – Belgrade, Novi Sad,
Nis;
• Access to the site from the main road from Belgrade dir ection is highly unsafe and the
existing crossroads at the highway M-5 (E-761) Paracin – Zajecar and a regional road R
– 105 Zvezdan – Gamzigrad is not functional and is very dangerous for traffic;
is project primarily aims for the protection and preservation of a cultural property of an
outstanding value, a part of the world heritage, whose significance surpasses Serbian
boundaries and those of the whole region. Besides these technical aspects, the project
also aims to have an impact on various other levels, benefitting all:
- new job openings:
а) at the palace: 3 guides, 4 site maintenance workers, 3 handymen;
b) at the Visitor Centre:15 new openings, 8 throughout the year and 7 seasonal ones;
- village tourism development;
- local products on offer (arts and crafts and the local cuisine dishes);
- more involvement of the Tourist Organisation of Zajecar and other tourist
organisations, which would be able now to improve their offer and consequently their
income;
- hospitality industry;
- public and cultural institutions will be able to use the site for scientific and educational
purposes (concerts, literary nights, exhibitions, etc.);
- the interest of private entrepreneurs and investors will be raised.
Another sign of the increasing and already existing involvement of the local community
is, that since the start of the archaeological research and conservation works, the
farming population of the nearby villages of Gamzigrad and Zvezdan have been
engaged as unqualified workers during summer campaigns.
At the moment, the tourists are provided with the following accommodation facilities:
The Gamzigrad Spa:
- the Castrum Hotel, capacity – 150 beds
- private accommodation, capacity of about 160 beds

Zajecar:
- the Serbia Hotel, capacity 120 beds
- the Konj Hotel, capacity 30 beds
- the Grinka Hotel, capacity 30 beds
7.1.3 Opportunities
Besides the potentials of the archaeological site itself, which provides an aesthetical
experience of viewing the remains of the ancient architecture along with a construction
frame of historic events, there are other potentials of the place to be developed:
а) Scientific potential:
- Possibilities of arranging the implementation of multidisciplinary researches of thearchaeological site and its protected surroundings. Non destructive and systematic
archaeological research, research of the ancient art achievements, architectural
achievements, petrographic research (the site containes various types of rocks of
different origin, and some investigations have already been done), biological research of
endemic plant species along with a creation of a picture of an erstwhile natural
environment (some research have already been initiated);
b) Potentials of conservation:
- Possibilities of creating a centre for conservation for the various materials found on thesite, such as objects and architectural elements;
- Possibilities of arranging for workshops of various training levels in conservation for
secondary school students or other young people at the beginning of their careers
working at museums or Institutes for the protection of cultural monuments.
c) Tourist potentials:
- Display of a 3D model of reconstructed fortress and palace and other buildings within
the complex
- Arranging for region specific food
- A chance for visitors to buy local cheese, honey and wines
- Arranging for Roman Nights, featuring food cooked according to ancient recipes
d) Educational potential

- Organising lectures on history and art of Rome, on various levels, for both primary and
secondary school pupils
- Organising training courses for masons working in ancient techniques on the site
- Organising training workshops for building and stone-masonry workers, dealing withvarious types of stone used on the site (sandstone, limestone);
- Organising training workshops for sculptors working on stone dressing and making the
ancient decoration elements;
- Organising training workshops for extracting and modelling the clay from ancient clay
pits and for making construction elements: brick with and without decorations and roof
covering elements for the unemployed building workers;
- Organising training workshops for primary and secondary schoolchildren in making
ceramics according to ancient originals;
- Organising training workshops for making mosaics with ancient motifs – for amateurs
e) Cultural potential:
- A traditional summer school of philosophy – competitions in rhetoric/eloquence on
classical subjects
- Organisation of traditional artistic music concerts and exchanges of similar events of
Serbia and Europe (some have already been organised in collaboration with an Italian
event “Nell suono dei luoghi”);
- Organisation of a Classical Drama festival, literary nights and concerts of young music
talents;
- Engaging local artists in making souvenirs and promotion material
g) Entertainment potential:
- The area outside the ramparts is a good place for creating a sort of a labyrinth with
signs linking it to the site, meant for schoolchildren;
- Traditional annual bikers visit, when riding through Serbia;
- TV quiz games produced for primary schoolchildren, with topics related to the
Gamzigrad-Romuliana site and the period of its origin;
- Creating new board games, or jig-saw puzzles, memory games, monopoly-like games
with the Gamzigrad-Romuliana illustration elements

f) Job potentials:
- Engaging professionals of various expertise in workshops activities;
- Engaging auxiliary staff of various profiles and qualifications, as well as unqualified
local workers on the site maintenance and safety;
- Arranging a permanent workshop for making bricks of traditional ancient dimensions,
of the clay extracted from the nearby clay pits, located some 600 metres north-west
from the site;
