INTRODUCTION

Generic Access Technology is a 3rd generation term in

wireless communications, where it helps to move voice

and text (the conventional mobile-telephony services) to

IP Network .

DEFINITION OF GAN/UMA

Generic Access Network in simple words is the

system that enables users to switch to an IP-Network

over Wi-Fi

When a mobile discover that it is in the range of a

Wi-Fi access point or public hotspot, it establishes asecure IP-Connection to the GAN Controller present

in the Core network

MODES OF OPERATION

A typical GAN/ UMN handset will have four modes of

operation:

1. GSM/EDGE radio access network (GERAN) -

only: uses only cellular networks

2. GERAN-preferred: uses cellular networks if available,

otherwise the 802.11 radio

3. GAN-preferred: uses a 802.11 connection if an access

point is in range, otherwise the cellular network

4. GAN-only: uses only the 802.11 connection

The handset scans for GSM cells when it first turns on, to

determine its location area. This allows the carrier to route thecall to the nearest Generic Access Network Controller

(GANC), set the correct rate plan, and comply with existing

roaming agreements.

SECURITY

Authentication set up being provided before user

gain access to the network services.

ADVANTAGES

To both Carriers and Subscribers:

Rather than setting up costly sites in areas where

coverage cannot be provided i.e. the Dead Zone, GAN

supports coverage through low power 802.11 Access

Points

To Subscribers:

Device that use 802.11 implies low and affordable

rates, better coverage at homes, also low roaming

charges outside ones network

GAN combines GSM and 802.11 into a service that

uses a single number, a single handset, a single set of

services and a single phone directory for all calls.

GAN can migrate between IP and cellular coverage

and is thus seamless

To carriers:

 GAN relieves congestion

It reduces the amount of load on cellular

networks, by shifting some burden to internet

infrastructure

It provide the ability to shift calls to internet

infrastructures

DISADVANTAGES

The user must have Wi-Fi/GAN enabled

Mobile phones to gain access to the services

The Mobile phones that support both Wi-

Fi/UMA may be costly

Calls are prone to disconnect in lieu of

transitions from Wi-Fi to the wireless service

and vice versa
