New England is where it all began. The history of America as well as the history of GANT. Throughout the years this coastline has worked its strange and magical attraction on academics, artists, writers and those individuals who want to enjoy the good life to its fullest. It’s where we come from, it’s where we always return: to the sea and the inspiration. That is an experience we’re always more than happy to share. So, like so many summers before, welcome to our place!

DECORATING THE KENNEDY SUMMER HOUSE in Hyannisport

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. or “Bobby” as he is known to his friends, loves the water. It’s a very personal love that is rooted in a magi-cal childhood growing up in Hyannisport, Massachusetts on the shores of Nantucket Sound. Here, among historic clapboard houses, boardwalks and beaches Bobby and his six energetic children now share their own home.

The Kennedys moved to Hyannisport in the 1920s when Bobby’s grandfather Joseph P. Kennedy purchased a rambling beachfront home. “Grandpa’s house” was soon sur-rounded by the homes of his children in-cluding Bobby’s father’s, Attorney General Robert Kennedy and his uncle’s President John F. Kennedy, in a tight compound. Other Kennedy relatives also moved into a slightly more scattered orbit around Joseph Kennedy’s gabled clapboard summerhouse and the tiny seaside village. Bobby spent each summer on Cape Cod at the family compound where he and his 29 cousins enjoyed a daily regimen of ath-letic training and outdoor activities. Each day the families would sail to the nearby islands with the children skippering their own tiny sailboats and the grownups lead-ing the fl otilla in the family’s 26-foot Wian-no Senior. They would picnic there and fi sh for sand sharks, scup, fl ounder, puffers and sea robins; gather hermit crabs, periwinkles and scallops, or dig for the tasty steamers.

After sailing they would play baseball on the fi eld behind John F. Kennedy’s summer White House or touch football below Joseph Kennedy’s veranda on the sprawling green lawn bordered by sawgrass and white sand beaches that stretch into the sparkling sea. Hyannisport was a paradise for Bobby. Sur-rounded by his family he indulged his ob-session with the natural world. Nothing much has changed in Hyannis-port in the 50 years since it served as the summer White House but today Bobby’s six children have 85 cousins to play with, all of them enjoying the same close relationship with nature and the sea. Each day they ride their bikes to the tidal inlets at Cal-mus Beach to crab, or to the salt marshes at nearby Squaw Island to catch fi ddler crabs, killifi sh, and mumichugs. They dip-net for painted turtles and baby catfi sh on Anderson’s Pond, and seine for eels, shiners, skipjacks and Atlantic needle fi sh that hide in the Sargasso weed on the shores that bracket the harbor. Bobby’s home is a virtual hotel. His sib-lings, cousins and dozens of young cous-ins from the 4th generation assemble each night with weekend guests and stray kids from across the village after outdoor games of baseball, football and capture-the-fl ag. As head of the household, he cooks a giant barbecue, as thirty bicycles lie resting on the front lawn. Bobby’s classic New England cedar shingle

home was built in 1820 by a sea captain. On its roof is a charming fenced terrace known locally as a “widow’s walk”, where the cap-tain’s wife could watch for her husband’s re-turn from the sea. From here, the expansive sea views stretch to the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket on the edge of the horizon. Midnight may fi nd a dozen chil-dren sleeping on the widow’s walk beneath the stars on foam bedrolls. Facing the other way, there’s a Kennedy home in every direc-tion. Bobby himself grew up in the house next door with ten siblings, his mother Ethel who still lives there and father Rob-ert Kennedy, the legendary attorney general and civil rights champion of the ’60s. The doors of this hospitable household

are never locked. The kitchen is always open and the barbecue pit lit. Ringing phones, blaring music, trampling feet and the barking of the Kennedy’s two dachs-hunds, Cupid and Cinnamon, add to the atmosphere of amiable anarchy. Kids box, dance, wrestle, paint pictures or play “ananagrams” on the fl oor while the older boys and girls clean fresh caught bluefi sh on the outdoor patio. Somewhere someone is playing a few bars on a piano. Between May and September, the house functions as the hub around which the fam-ily’s life revolves. There is nothing ostenta-tious here. The three-story house contains an astounding twenty-one beds scattered haphazardly over fi ve crowded bedrooms, a living room and study, all served by a kitchen and four bathrooms. Stained pine fl oors complement beautiful windows cheer-fully lighting practical bedrooms strewn with matching pillows, duvets and throws. Terrycloth robes and towels hanging in the bathrooms tastefully complete the casual country home feeling. Shelves in the kitchen and the hallways overfl ow with plates, bowls and glasses, all anxiously expecting unexpected visitors. The combined dining room and study is too small for the perpetual crowds and fl ows out onto a patio fi lled with wicker and Adiron-dack chairs, which functions as the social center of the house. Even on the occasional Cape Cod rainy

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is President of Waterkeeper Alliance and the best-known environmental lawyer in America. Water-keeper Alliance is the world’s foremost grassroots water protection organization. As president, he leads over two hundred local waterkeeper programs that protect rivers, lakes and ocean bays around the world using patrol boats, litigation and sci-ence to bring the biggest polluters to justice.Waterkeepers understand that clean water means healthy communities.

day, the family spends time together. Bobbytakes the kids to play paint ball or roller hockey or go bowling or to the movies. The return trip to the compound almost invariably includes a stop at the world famous ice cream parlor “Four Seas”, which also provides cones and chocolate sundaes on evenings when dinner guests outnumber the desserts. Fresh ocean breezes blow through open windows and doors. The president of Water-keeper Alliance has spent his entire life on rivers and by the sea, and was taught from an early age along with the rest of his cousins to never fear the ocean. Kennedy

boats can be seen on Nantucket Sound even on the windiest days when the small craft warning fl ag is battering the fl ag-pole at the end of the Hyannisport pier. Calmer days fi nd the children swimming, diving from the pier, windsurfi ng, water-skiing, wake boarding, kite surfi ng, kaya-king and surfi ng. All the children knowhow to navigate and handle themselves on a sailboat. Bobby’s passion for the sea is evident throughout his house. Navigational charts, marine and nautical art adorn every wall. The third fl oor is paneled in the style of a wooden ship’s cabin. In those rare instances when the house is actually quiet, Bobby gets a chance to tell the children tales of Cape Cod’s riveting history, pirate ships, the Wampanoag Indians, whaling fl eets and the pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock. Other days the family goes diving with friend and world-famous treasure hunter Barry Clif-ford, searching for pirate treasure on the wreck of the Whydah – Sam Bellamy’s ship that foundered off Cape Cod in 1691. The Kennedy children often return to the sur-face with handfuls of gold pirate dubloons. The idyllic paradise that patriarch Joseph Kennedy found in Hyannisport abides for generations of Kennedys. Each year new members of the clan learn to love nature and Cape Cod as their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents have during every magical summer since 1920.

The bridge between the US and Europe is said to start from Cape Cod, a peninsula where many East Coast intellectuals have their summer addresses. On closer inspection of the map you can see just how the cape stretches its arm straight out into the Atlantic Ocean, as if reaching for the Continent on the other side.

Marines and fi shermen gave their style to the world (with a little

help from a president).

Everything is spelled t-r-a-d-i-t-i-o-n in this “original America”. No amount of new ideas or novelties have managed to erase the focus on education, family life, values, sports and culture. On the contrary, these traditions only seem to get stronger with time. Just take fashion. Chinos in all colors, Oxford and button-down shirts, turtle-necks, sweaters, pea coats and sailing shoes are garments that embody the classic east-coast-look for most people. Images of Ivy League campuses, yacht races and cocktails on immaculate, sweeping lawns instantly fi ll your mind. Long before they became fashionable, however, the only point to these garments was their function. And functionality depended on quality. Sailors and fi shermen needed tough enough clothes to work at sea. Soldiers returning from World War II had got used to more comfortable pants. Everyone who experienced grim winters

here, with icy winds scouring around every house and rocky shore, simply wished for a winter wardrobe that would keep them reliably warm. As the Anglo-Saxon heritage blended further into the local sense for the fi ner things in life, it was only a question of time before the garments started looking good too. And yet it wasn’t until 1960 that the style was immortalized. That was the year John F. Kennedy became the youngest US President in history. Folks who until then had considered New England a place reserved for “eccentric bohemians” and “sports nerds” now started to see their north-eastern neighbor in a completely new light.

36 37

Summer is never more windswept than it is in New England, the sky is never as blue, and life on and around the beach is never more salt-splotched and relaxed. In time for Memorial Day, at the end of May, surfboards are waxed and the small family-owned seafood shacks once again tempt the taste buds with freshly caught crabs, clams, tuna and lobster rolls; as tasty as if they’d been served straight off the fi sherman’s boat. As you travel through the New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Ver-mont, you are constantly struck by how authentic, traditional and down-to-earth everything is. Presidents, professors, media personali-ties and cultural darlings can relax here and switch off from demanding jobs in New York, Boston and Washington without hordes of paparazzi lurking in the reeds. The local patriotism that abounds is almost

physical. Everyone is proud of where they come from, and therefore eager to share. It feels like everybody walks around with a common, shared idea: American East Coast Style is a style that invites everyone to the party.

The European version of America

Around these parts, people never forget that it was at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, when English pilgrims fi rst disembarked from the Mayfl ower in 1620, that modern America was born. Architecture in the small villages, fi shing communities and sophisticated university towns is living history – for young and old alike. They will all describe the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775 as enthusiastically as last night’s homerun by baseball hero Kevin Youkilis of Boston’s (and all of New England’s) loved-to-bits Red Sox.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day Weekend.

Page 20: GANT SS11 MAG Bl•ddra FINAL€¦ · 3 06 the kennedy summer house 18 boys & girls 20 preppy professor 36 from memorial day to labor day weekend 40 east coast surfing 46 gant by

Kennedy was born and raised in Boston, educated at Harvard, owned a large summer residence on Cape Cod and nurtured an interest in sailing that bordered on the obsessive. He was often photographed on his boat, dressed in tan chinos and a lambswool sweater. Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and John F. Kennedy, who were married in the small church of St Mary’s in Newport, spent all their free time away from the White House in the Hyannisport compound that is still in the family today. “I always come back to the Cape and walk the beach when I have a tough decision to make. The Cape is the one place I can think and be alone”, is a quote that drives home the point that this 70 mile long and oftentimes windy “pile of sand” has had just as large an effect on world politics as on fashion.

Where sailing and chinos are religion.

On a clear and sunny morning in June, we land at Newport. If not the heart of all of New England then at least the heart of Rhode Island, the smallest state in the US and commonly referred to by locals as “The Ocean”. Newport was the fi rst vacation spots in the nation. It was here that pioneering summer guests for the fi rst time ever in the US sailed and played tennis, polo and golf. And it was here that the wealthiest of New York’s fi nanciers and their families

spent their summers from the late 1800’s to 1930. Aside from tennis and golf, these families also challenged each other in an ongoing contest to see who could build the most impressive renaissance palace and who hosted the most lavish, talked-about summer parties (F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby” gives you a good idea). However you usually left your “cottage”, which was the modest moniker used for the family summer palace, after just a few weeks. Next stop on the social calendar: hunting and fi shing at your fall residence in the Adirondacks. Thanks to private donations and the Newport Restoration Foundation, many of these “cottages” have been preserved and are open to the public today. Of equal historic importance for New-

38 39

port are the classic America’s Cup races.Between 1870 and 1983, the US team was so dominant it was said that if another nation should, God forbid, manage to win, the trophy displayed at the New York Yacht Club would be replaced with the head of the man responsible for the loss. But after 132 straight victories the longest streak in modern sports history was broken. The unthinkable became a fact one beautiful September day in 1983, when a band of Aussies aboard “Australia II” vanquished the American boat “Liberty”. The head of skipper Dennis Conner is reputedly still attached to his shoulders, and Newport, which dreams of hosting the America’s Cup again, is with its 156 other races and regattas every year still the undisputed US sailing capital. With this come countless opportunities for socializing. An active yacht club that is serious about dress codes is bound to infl uence fashion. Wearing black, jeans, high heels or socks in the summer months are telltale signs that the person you’re talking to is an out-of-towner. The local uniform consists of a pair of chinos with a polo or a button-down shirt – and of course no socks.

GANT going back home.

White wooden houses with porches, Adirondack chairs, lighthouses, gray slates, the Star Spangled Banner, signal fl ags, woody station wagons, graduation gowns,

boardwalks leading to the beach, chugging fi shing boats, labradors… and Katherine Hepburn just walked by. Or did she? Even if you’ve never been here you know what it looks like. A myriad of images from endless American fi lms and TV shows spring to mind, perhaps mixed with illustrations by New England-born artist Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), who managed to capture the essence of American everyday and family life better than anyone. Where Europe ends and America begins, a meeting occurs that never ceases to fascinate. This cross-fertilization between worlds is a constant source of inspiration. Famous artists, photographers and other creative people have benefi ted from this throughout the years. One of them was Bernard Gant, a visionary man who started making shirts in New Haven, Connecticut together with his sons 61 years ago. A fashion that, via campus stores at Yale, Harvard and Brown has since traveled out into the world, and has made GANT’s roots grow ever stronger as more of us have taken to this way of life. That’s why we always stick around. Through fall when nature’s mesmerizing color fi reworks make “leaf peepers” of us all, through winter when skis carry us down the slopes of Vermont and New Hampshire, only to experience the gardens of Maine bursting into full bloom again the following spring. But we’ll have to leave all that for some other time. First, another classic summer awaits us.

Michael Bastian, one of the most talked about American designers of today, is following up on last

year’s successful design collaboration with GANT. After having held leading positions at various prestigious fashion companies and

department stores, Michael Bastian launched his own menswear line a few years ago.

Since then, he has been nominated Menswear Designer of the Year by the CFDA no less than three times. Last season, he teamed up with GANT and created a lacrosse-inspired men’s

collection which was a huge success.

This season, he has designed his fi rst-ever collection for women: the “GANT by Michael Bastian”

guy has found his girl.
