eanna Droira-Garcia’s relationship withpublic transportation began with aharrowing drive on I-75, when she

suffered a seizure at the wheel. Thanks to the kindacts of a Good Samaritan, her vehicle was movedover to the side of the road and medical assistancewas quickly called upon to her aid. Due to thisevent, her driving days were over for the

foreseeable future, and public transportation became her daily mode of transportation to goalmost everywhere. An account executive with Radio Disney, Deanna has clients throughout the tri-county area.

By using Tri-Rail, Broward County Transit, Miami-Dade Transit, and Palm Tran, she was not onlyable to make and keep appointments, but she became one of Radio Disney’s top salespeople inthe region. Deanna submitted her very compelling story about using trains and buses to getaround South Florida in response to the Florida Public Transportation Association’s “Tell OurStory” contest and won first prize. The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) learned of her story and invited her

to speak at the “Telling Our Story” rally in Washington, D.C., last month. Among the officialswho attended the event was Representative Jim Oberstar, chair of the House ofRepresentatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. APTA’s year-long “Telling Our Story” effort was created to inform elected officials in

Washington about the importance of passing a long-range bill to fund public transportation. It asked transit riders from across the nation, to tell elected officials about the importance ofpublic transportation in their lives. Thousands of people responded and submitted their storiesto be posted on APTA’s video wall and also signed petitions to support the effort. SinceFebruary 2010, many of them have been featured in this newsletter, but to read all of theirstories, log on to www.publictransportation.com.

“Publictransportationmeans I’m doing mypart to contribute toa greener planet.I’m helping toreduce America’sdependency onforeign oil. I initiallyplanned to take

Tri-Rail only for one week to see if it was aviable option for my daughter who attendspublic school in Riviera Beach. When mytrial run ended, I quickly realized that I wasa lot less stressed and generally felt bettersince I wasn’t fighting the traffic logjam onI-95; and I love the little naps that I sneakin during my daily commutes.”

-- Willie Swoope

It is wonderful towake up in themorning and nothave to face thegridlock of morningrush hour traffic. After a tiring andstressful day atwork, it is wonderfulto be able to relax

and converse with friends. I suggest thatanyone who wants to save money, be stressfree and enjoy your ride to and from work, take Tri-Rail and join the EDP to save evenmore money.”
