60th Celebration Worship, Sunday, November 3 at 10:00 a.m. in Morris Hall: this is the Sunday that falls closest to November 6, the actual date of our 60th Anniversary. Kenya Mission Trip Leaves in Early November

Our small but very enthusiastic team will be leaving for Kenya on Tuesday, November 5th. We cannot wait to serve and build relationships with the people at the IDP camp (Internally Displaced People) that were forced to relocate to the Rift Valley after the turmoil and violence following the Kenyan presidential election in 2007. These people are basically refugees in their own country. We will be working with the members of the Mutini Church, which is the church in the camp, led by their minister John Karanja. Our team will minister to these people in many ways………..building a house for a church member, painting the church and the Sunday School classrooms, feeding the church after Sunday service, visiting the members where we will be distributing food because the harvest was poor this year due to the drought, giving blankets out to the elderly, and conducting a seminar for women in the community on how to take better care of their children including nutrition for their families. In addition, we will tour the Rift Valley Academy where Taylor and Ashley Hemphill serve as missionaries. We will see the school in session and have a better understanding of what they do so their mission can be shared with our church family.

We ask for you as a church to pray for us as we embark on this journey. It is our prayer that the Lord will give us open minds to see and experience a different culture, have a compassionate heart towards those less fortunate, and a willingness to learn and expand our minds.

These pictures are from the Mutini Church in Kenya where the mission team will visit. This is also the church

in which Garber will fund the building of a new classroom/library as part of our 60th Anniversary Mission Outreach! Our mission team will deliver the check for the

addition while they are there.

We also hope to grow our new relationship with the Mutini Church in the near future by adding books to their

library and providing a baptismal pool for their baptisms of new believers.

In addition, our team will also take a symbolic carving of a heart. This heart will hang in their new room. A plaque with an empty cut-out for that heart will hang at Garber.

The heart and plaque will be created by Jack & Julia Bircher at Century Farm Crosses.

Dear Garber Family,

Please accept my sincere appreciation for the many expressions of love and support, but most of all your prayers, during Tom’s illness and recent death. Your love and prayers have been a comfort to our family through this very difficult time. Please continue to remember us as we travel this grief journey. May God richly bless all of you as you continue to bless others. In Christian Love, Wendy Chapman

Dear Congregation: Trinity United Methodist Church here in New Bern is hosting a Bible Conference on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 8, 9 and 10, 2019 under the banner of “Jesus - The Man For All Seasons”. Jesus Christ is the center of Christianity and our churches. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Warren Smith from Duke Divinity who will teach from passages from the Gospel of John. We also propose to have special music and a lot of singing. We are scheduling a session on Friday evening, two sessions Saturday morning, a session on Saturday evening and a session on Sunday morning. We ask that you please put this on your calendar, advertise this for us, plan to attend and pray for it. A follow-up flyer will come your way soon. May God richly bless your ministry! Rev. Bryan Huffman, Pastor

A Personal Reflection From 2019 Russian Team Member Rebecca Owens

My biggest God sighting I witnessed in Russia is definitely woven in every relationship I saw. Whether it was between us

and the boys, or translators, or even the van driver, our past experiences together definitely left a lasting impact. This trip

was my third time going to Russia with Garber. I have seen so many of the boys grow up and change physically and some

emotionally, but the connection we, as a group, have is always remembered and cherished no matter how much time passes

until we see each other again. Zheyna, a orphan at Kovalyova, was a sweet boy I played Legos with my first year when we

were only there for a short while. The next year we bonded a little more, when he stayed in the same room where we were

doing the eye exams. We talked and played games. He particularly enjoyed the phone games of course. This year we played

games again and bonded some more. Zheyna has a very playful energetic soul and he will carry this energy and light he

brings to a room no matter how old he gets. His favorite game/personality he likes to take on is the orphanages house cat.

Just being able to watch him grow in so many ways but stay the same — Zhenya is my God moment. Without the love and

support from God and our church, we wouldn’t be able to form these relationships that not only the boys cherish for the rest

of their lives but that we also hold near to our hearts. God says to love our neighbors as ourselves, and with everything

going on in our outside world today with our neighbors we tend lose a lot of that love for one another and get wrapped up in

the distractions. Part of our job when we go overseas to visit our neighbors is to mend that broken relationship, to show the

boys who have lost family and hope that God sent their neighbors to love them despite what the world says, and that we

keep coming back; we don’t forget about them like others in their lives have. This is my God moment, it’s all the

relationships and little things that have built up trust and love for our neighbors.

Check out the new acquisitions generous Garber readers have donated to your library. By the time you read this you can see new materials on the truck in the third floor library. Please be sure to complete the card(s) in the back(s) of the books you borrow and put the card(s) in the blue box so we can keep track of where the books are. Thanks! Coleen Brock

2019 Faith in Action Vision Clinic Report

The 2019 Faith in Action Clinic was held on Saturday, September 21 and was a tremendous success! With the help of over 100 Garber and Lion’s Club volunteers, we

served 300 people that day with free exams and, if needed, free glasses.

Our thanks to Vision Service Providers (VSP) for providing the optical equipment and employees from all over the country that came to help run the optical division of the clinic.

Also, many thanks to our local/area optometrist and specialists who gave their entire Saturday to help our patients.

The final total numbers for the day were: 35 patients had exams only, 97 patients received single vision lenses, 164 patients received bi-focal lenses, 4 patients received tri-focal

lenses, totaling 300 patients seen in clinic; another 100 VSP vouchers were handed out to people who could not get in the clinic but will be seen by area professionals to receive a

vision screening and glasses.

A final VERY BIG thank you to Dr. Cathy Doty and Dr. Shawn Doty for organizing the Faith in Action Vision Clinic once again — which they have been doing since 2006!

MOSAIC NEWS

What a glorious time was had by young and older adults as well as children at the last MOSAIC

event in September! The Family Fun Mission Night was a huge success, thanks to all of the help of

Garber staff and volunteers, the Sr. Ministries Advisory Team, Matt Johnson, Abby Simpson, and all

the families who came out to participate. From games, to cookie decorating, to food and fellowship

with two beautiful songs delivered to the Glory of God, the engagement in our special mission projects

by children and families, to our final circle of prayer, joy and laughter filled Morris Hall.

Oh, What a NIGHT! Praise be to God!

A group of 29 senior will be traveling to Washington, DC, October 2-5 for an exciting adventure to

see JESUS & MUSEUM of the BIBLE. Please pray for our safe travels.

October 2019

From the Pastor: Formerly, the United Methodist order for the reception of members began with these words:

Dearly beloved, the Church is of God, and will be preserved to the end of time, for the conduct of worship and the due administration of his Word and Sacraments, the maintenance of Christian fellowship and discipline, the edification of believers, and the conversion of the world. All, of ever age and station, stand in need of the means of grace which it alone supplies.

When Garber Church was charted in 1959, very possibly this statement was used to introduce that section of the service in which our Charter Members took their vows. We could insist that those first members believed then, as we do now, that “all, of every age and station, stand in need of the means of grace which [Garber Church] supplies.” I read an article this week reflecting upon the positive benefits that accrue to a community because of the presence of a church. The author, summarizing several complex, national studies, described several score of benefits under a few subtitles: economic benefits to the community; social benefits; decreased crime and deviance; mental and physical health; and the promotion of outcomes that improve government stability and economic growth. In more detail, he wrote of the educational success of students when involved with a church. He described how the environment near the church tended to be safer. The studies show that the movement to and from the facility benefits the economy, and that the presence of a church has a positive impact on the job market. In truth, I have not given extensive thought to what a 60 year presence might have generally and informally provided for our community. More often, I think of the Christian impact and community good in more specific terms. For example, more than a thousand children have begun their education in our preschool. Scores have been loved in our Kingswood Ministry. We shared in the origins of Religious Community Services and of Merci Clinic. Rightly do we rejoice in 60 years of loving and therefore blessing our neighbors. However, the article did not look so much at specific programs a church might offer. The thesis is that the very presence of a Church, in our case, of Garber Church, is a good for a community. Even those who never attend its services or programs are benefitted by its presence. For 60 years, our Church has sought to be a light set on a lamp stand, a city set on a hill. For 60 years, we have sought to love God in the midst of our neighbors and to love our neighbors as those who love God. For 60 years, this Church has sought faithfully to present and to represent the great story of God’s mercy and grace in Jesus Christ. Praise be to God for everything good that has come to others because God led persons to charter this Church. As we move toward our anniversary celebration, rightly do we thank God for 60 years of Gospel witness and influence in our community. At the same time, we seek to continue our witness to the Gospel of Jesus as we continue to love our neighbors and be a blessing to our community for years to come.

SHOE BOXES! SHOE BOXES! SHOE BOXES!

In another week or two, you will walk into the Atrium at Garber and see the big green shoe box tree filled with Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes — just waiting to be filled with your love and goodies! Many of you already have your shoe boxes finished — the Motley Sunday School class has already packed 161 shoe boxes! — but for those of you who have waited, it’s time to get going! New to shoe boxes? These precious boxes filled with simple toys, t-shirts, games, school supplies, hy-giene/hair items, balls, jump ropes, and more will be shipped, via Samaritan’s Purse, to children in poverty and/or war-torn countries. But more than that, each box will be given with the Gospel message in that child’s native language, and the opportunity to attend a 12 week class that teaches the salvation story. It is a complete package of love! We hope everyone will pack a shoe box! If you can, let each person in your family pack a box. Or consider giving shoe boxes in honor of friends and family members this Christmas, giving them a card stating that an Operation Christmas Child shoe box was packed in their honor! Be creative! Each shoe box requires $9 shipping — this money enables this gift to go to the processing centers to be checked and sorted by ages, packed into cartons, loaded onto pallets, and shipped all over the world. Really a bargain price for overseas shipping!

Thank you for your support of our Shoe Box Ministry as we work to spread God’s love and His message to the ends of the earth!

And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me, in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,

and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8
