The Bundesgartenschau 2015 Havelregion – From cathedral to cathedral, the blue ribbon of the Havel River

The 2015 Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA) from Havelberg to Brandenburg: the Havel region is a contiguous landscape and cultural region with a collective cultural history of ap-proximately 1,000 years. The settlement of the region was promoted by both bishoprics. The majority of them have been redeveloped and restored in recent years according to historic documents. The history of these gardens illuminates us, fascinates us and allows us to experience these sites and to be deeply impressed. Baroque parks stimulate our imagination without our help. We are on a journey through time into the 17th and 18 th century – in which the well-planned, almost geometrically laid out gardens invited the royal cou-

ple to enjoy the pleasures of summer. Guests adorned in brocade and silk promenade on cream-coloured paths.

Water shafts feed soaring fountains, while their cooling drops bathe the surround-ing box tree sculptures. The hands of clever and patient gardeners make globes, cones and curiosities grow from them. A strange sculptural

world of stone between tree and blossom is also always included in the artistic callig-raphy of the Baroque era. So it is not surprising that gods and nymphs also want to make a good impression.

Even today, the Garden Dreams parks with their Ba-roque design attest to the crea-tivity and quality which we still enjoy almost 300 years later.

They are something very special. Even today one recognises parks which contain traces of Baroque splendour and elicit

“ahs” and “wows” from visitors.

The approximately 107 ha large ensemble of the Blankenburg palatial gardens is located in the immediate vicinity of the historic Old Town. The famous Baroque terrace with its bubbling water shaft is situated above the small palace. The mountain garden with the tea house, upper mill and the large palace are connected. The modern designed pheasant garden, the scenic palatial park and the zoolo-gical garden top off the ensemble.

The maze at Altjeßnitz with a Manor Park, today the oldest and largest in Germany, was created in the middle of the 18th centu-ry. There are roughly 200 ways to reach its centre. The maze is embedded in a 4 hectare large landscape park. The 12th century field-stone church belonging to the manor park is surrounded by picturesque groves. Playing possibilities and picnic spots invite visitors for family excursions.

Prince Leopold III, Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau, made his dream come true here. Still inspired by the impressions of his tour of England, as early as the 2nd half of the 18 th century, he planned a project that newly arranged the Wörlitz land-scape between the Elbe and Mulde rivers, making it better usable for the residents.

The subsequently emerging Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz is a unique cultural landscape which is a World Heritage Site today.

For 250 years, Wörlitz has invited visitors to sharpen their senses and to enjoy the enlightened view at the essential beauty in is facilities, which are always freely accessible. Here is the

source of all landscape art in Germany, and naturally also a role model and example for numerous parks in present-day Saxony-Anhalt. After the era of Baroque gardens, a wave of park redevelop-ment started, primarily in the beginning of the 19th century. In the process, “walk-in land-scape paintings” with special visual relationships between buildings, sculptures and horticultural elements were created. The park acquired a philosophical dimension.

As so often, the truth is very plain: whoever wants to see the original of all English-style landscape parks on the European continent has to travel to Wörlitz.

The 29 ha large park frames the Late Baroque Ballenstedt Castle complex as a high-ranking example of the garden art of the 18th and 19th centuries. A prominent park element is the former water shaft in the Italian-style villa gardens planned by Peter Joseph Lenné, which are embedded in the landscape park. The refurbished castle mill and the cast-iron Lion by Gottfried Schadow are also worth seeing. Attractive vistas of the park and the surroun-ding Harz countryside are made possible by the well-preserved castle tower.

The Early Baroque castle with the Gothic cathedral and the remnants of the defensive fortifications constitutes a remarkable overall ensemble. The adjacent castle park, site of the Zeitz State Horticultural Show in 2004, de-lights visitors with a diversified area. Among other things to discover here, you will find an orangery with a Baroque parterre, pleasure gardens, an English landscape park, a Japane-se garden and spacious adventure worlds for children.

The first glance at a historic facility which is so impor-tant among us visitors that decides on love and sym-pathy, also seeks a mighty copper beech tree on a rich green meadow, or the first colourful blaze of narcissuses and tulips in the spring, and the delicate pink, wine-red and pearly-white radiant, fragrant rose blossoms of

summer. But in the artifi-cially conjured landscape park which seems natural, visitors also seek, in amazement, the splendid specimens of trees and hedgerows which are already hundreds of years old. However, because of all the trees, blossoms and leaves you have to take your time and look closely to discern the park’s face – its gentle

radiance in the first spring sun, its exuberant satisfac-tion on luscious summer days and the touch of silent melancholy in the middle of autumnal fog.

Many of these searching glances will strike a bo-nanza in the Garden Dreams facilities that are a verita-ble pleasure for visitors. And as is so often in our life, many a park needs our second glance so that being enamoured becomes deep affection!

The Wernigerode Castle Gardens encompass the former Royal Zoological Garden with the chest-nut grove natural monument area, the pleasure garden and the terraced gardens near the castle. Numerous relicts of its former Baroque design such as the Lion’s Gate or the Orangery can still be found in the pleasure garden, a landscape park. After 1777, Prince Franz had a “forest park” laid out in the bend of the Elbe River west of Vockerode. The objective was to create an “orderly wilder-ness”. Small-scale architectural structures and monuments are also included in the garden, which incorporates the natural vegetation in the design. Artistically designed gates mark the entrance to the facility. The Solitude is currently being restored.

The Kühnau Landscape Park was laid out in the early 19th century at Lake Kühnau. A vineyard with stone terraces and a “Little Vineyard Palace” – an Italian-style villa – constitute the park’s artistic highlight. The Grosskühnau pa-lace and church ensemble with small palatial garden is also part of the facility.

The Luisium is an idyllic park which Leopold III Frederick Franz Duke of Anhalt-Dessau de-dicated to his wife Louise. The classicistic villa (1774 - 1778) is a masterpiece by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff. The garden is in-vigorated through neo-Gothic and classicistic buildings as well as grottos, constructed ruins and sculptures.

In the course of the castle’s reconstruction after a devastating fire in 1597, the park was also designed by Italian masters as a Renais-sance complex in a mixture of kitchen and ornamental garden. The reconfiguration into an English landscape park occurred in the 19th century.

The terraced gardens and the forest park belong to the castle gardens towering high above Stolberg. The terraced gardens have ex-perienced several design phases ranging from Baroque garden via landscaped design right up to the formal garden of the modern era.

The Brühl fen was designed in the 17th century by abbesses of the abbey as a Baroque pleasure grove and expanded by a landscaped portion in the 18th century. The flowering of wild garlic in the early summer in the historic Jagdstern area is unique. The abbey garden with Baroque main axis and water basin connects the centre of Quedlinburg with the Brühlpark.

Starting in 1763, cathedral dean E. L. Ch. Spiegel had the present day Spiegelsberge reforested and gradually built the park’s architectural fea-tures, which were typical for an early landscape park. Prominent structures such as the hunting lodge with the world’s oldest giant wine barrel, the Belvedere Observation Tower and the Her-mitage have been preserved.

The charming palace and garden from Mosig-kau was built in the years 1752 - 1757. A buil-ding and garden complex whose rural charm emanates an incomparable radiance was crea-ted in the heyday of the Rococo era. Today, the facility is amongst the last largely preserved Rococo ensembles in Central Germany.
