Not ONE, but TWO GHES teachers have won Atlanta Families Awards! Congratulations to 1st Grade teacher Tiffany Barnes and 2nd Grade teacher Katie Carlson! On Thursday morning, Mrs. Barnes and Ms. Carlson received a big surprise! Representatives from Atlanta Families Awards presented these two outstanding teachers with $7,500 each to reward them for their hard work and dedication to the education of their stu- dents. Mrs. Barnes was commended for her work with reading incentives, showing a 35% increase in students reaching their reading goals last year, and Ms. Carlson was honored for her work with the GHES Learning Gardens. A representative from Captain Planet, the organization whose grant made the Learning Gardens possible for our school, was there to offer the organization’s continued h elp in maintaining our gardens. $2,000 of each award is for the teachers to spend as they like, with the other $5,000 to go toward continu- ing their good work. Also in the crowd were Board of Education members Nancy Meister and Cynthia Brown, Dr. Sidney Baker, last year’s AFA Winner (and GHES 5th Grade teacher) Ms. Kelly Petrello, Mrs. Barnes’ and Ms. Carlson’s students, PTA members, GHES parents, and several of Mrs. Barnes’ and Ms. Carlson’s friends and family. The Atlanta Families Awards representative present ing the awards remarked that it is a rarity indeed that 2 of the recipients of these awards teach at the same school. We are so fortunate to have these two bright stars among all on our “stellar” staff! Fill Your Tank and Fuel Your School in October… Chevron is working with DonorsChoose.org to help teachers get the supplies they need for eligible classroom projects. During the month of October, whenever you fuel up with 8 or more gallons at a participating Chevron or Texaco station, Chevron will donate $1 to support GHES teacher projects! To learn more, go to www.fuelyourschool.com. Here are some local stations participating in the program: Chevron: 2331 Peachtree Road (near the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center), 2319 Cheshire Bridge Road, 639 Morosgo (near Zesto), 2195 Monroe Drive, 2911 Buford Highway, Texaco: Pharr Road GHES Family Picnic! See you next Tuesday, September 30th from 5:30-7:00 pm All Garden Hills families are invited to bring a blanket and picnic dinner to the field for our rescheduled family picnic! It is a fun event to meet other parents and find out who your child’s new friends are. There will be a table set up to join the PTA and learn a bout vol- unteer opportunities, and the PTA Board is bringing after dinner treats for the kids. We hope you’ll join us! 5th Grade Orchestra Concert 5 th Grade will be having their first concert on Tuesday, October 28 th ! It will be held at Sutton Middle School and begin at 6:30 pm. We hope to see you there! FREE English & Spanish Classes for Parents & Guardians offered at GHES! SPANISH Session: Tuesdays & Thursdays, October 7th through November 18th | 5:30-7:30 pm You are invited to participate in these classes to form a base to better communicate with your child’s teachers. Mr. Usher and PTA Members to Visit GHES Families: Saturday, September 27th Mr. Usher and members of the PTA will visit families in the apartment complexes at Morosgo at 10:00 am and the will be Woodlands at 11:00 am tomorrow. We are looking for at least one volunteer from each location to help coordinate the visit. If you live in the Woodlands Apartments, or the apartments on Morosgo, please call Kim Nolte at 770.317.5101. She speaks Spanish. Local School Council Update– Applications are due by Tuesday, September 30th Remember, when you commit to serve on the Local School Council, you are committing to serve Garden Hills to the best of your ability! The LSC meets a few times during the school year with Mr. Usher to discuss the direction of education at GHES and important school system issues. This is a great opportunity to impact student learning and support the school. Our LSC is required to have at least two parents in the group who are local businesspeople, and we encourage parents who are bilingual to apply.
