Progress – ‘The One who calls you is faithful and he will do it’ 1ThessCh5 vs 24

It is with a huge sigh of relief that I am able to write to you all with the news that the Penrith Deanery Synod has finally approved a plan which will take the Anglican Churches of our Deanery into the future. My thanks go to all of our Deanery Synod representatives. They have had a fair amount to read and digest along the way, and one or two fairly tense meetings to attend. Thank-you for your time and your dedication.

So – what will the Penrith Deanery Plan mean for us all? Well, in the short term not very much. The next task in our overall journey towards forming Ecumenical Mission Communities is to draw up the job descriptions for two new clergy appointments in our Deanery – both will be important for us and our future, so it is vital that we remain engaged. The job descriptions have got to be right. The first appointment will be a Mission Community Leader role to be based with Dacre Church. The job will entail working with the clergy and laity of the western Deanery Area to work out how many Mission Communities our region should have, and where the stipendiary posts will be based. The second appointment will be to a Penrith based post. The job will be to act as a Mission Area Leader for the whole Penrith Region, and as Mission Community Leader for Penrith. I am anxious to be involved with drawing up the job descriptions and person specifications for both appointments.

I suppose the next question I need to address is ‘Why are we doing all this?’ The answer is, because we believe that the formation of Mission Communities will be the future of the church in this area. They will be the platform from which the ‘God for All’ agenda will find its way into our communities. The idea is, that by 2020, every person in Cumbria will have had a chance to discover more about God and his purpose for their lives. Why might this be important? The answer is that, we believe that by discovering these things a person receives truly Good News. They discover what their life is really for. What could be better in the midst of what we call ‘everyday life’ at this ‘topsy turvy’ point in our history!? Here’s just a hint: it is about more than shopping, social media and work!

Just one more thing, before I wish you all a focused Advent, and a brilliant Christmas and New Year.... ‘Moving Mountains – 8-11th March 2018’. In case you had not heard, between the 8th

and the 11th March 2018, we will be hosting a team of six people from the Isle of Man, who will be coming to help us run a mission to our area.. The aim of the mission will be to proclaim to our region, in a multitude of ways, that the God who was born amongst us at Christmas, all those years ago, simply adores us. The planning teams for Moving Mountains are pregnant with lots of good ideas.... by March these ideas will be out and about – incarnate - amongst us all. One thing I have to say is that, if it is not fun it is not worth doing! That is the start point. Then, we pray, invite and bring!

That’s it... and now... ‘May God bless us all, as we move towards Christmas this year. May he give us that focused Advent that we all need. May he remind us all, that we are so much more than the things we own or the houses we live in. May he remind us that we are so much more than the strengths or gifts he gave us. May he give us all great rejoicing in our Redeemer, the greatest treasure and deepest wellspring of our souls. May he give us a simple satisfaction in him alone.... and may he shower us with the astounding brilliance of his light this Christmas .... and finally, may the ‘Amen’ to that roll out across the hills and fields of the beautiful place we are privileged to call our home’. Amen

Philip
