Be the first to smile....

On the 10th of February, I drove the new Bishop of Zululand from Cumbria, down to Manchester Airport, so that he could make his way back home, after 2 weeks in England. Those of you who heard his interview on Richard Corrie’s Sunday morning Radio Cumbria show, will know that Bishop Monument was finding England cold! Where he lives, it is 36 degrees centigrade at the moment. He was also really missing his family, so in some ways, he was keen to get going! On arrival at the airport, Bishop Monument and I set out to find the Lufthansa check-in desk. It turned out to be a bit more of a ‘wild goose chase’ than I had expected, partly because Monument did not seem to want to look at his paper work! Anyway, finally we discovered that we were on the wrong floor of the wrong terminal, so we got into one of those large lifts, and the door shut behind us. Then, as we manoeuvred the luggage around, we were both surprised to find a third person in the compartment – a small woman in a very smart uniform. Without thinking, Bishop Monument did what any Zulu would do. He smiled at her, and said in his strong accent ‘Oh...Hello!’ To be honest, it did sound a bit like the dragon from that 1980’s Listerine advert. The smart woman blushed, and turned away from him, to face the lift door. Then, when it opened, she literally ran away. Watching the woman run off, I heard Bishop Monument say, ‘Aish...you British are so cold. Was she a racist? I thought for a minute, before replying, ‘No, I don’t think so.... but she might have thought you were a sexist. She might have thought you were trying to chat her up!’ Then, it was Monument’s turn to blush. He looked at the ceiling and exclaimed, ‘I will never ‘get’ this culture thing –can she not tell from the rings on my hand, that I am a married man, and a Bishop in the church of God!?’ Clearly, she could not. She came from a different world. On my own in the car, as I drove home to Cumbria, I reflected on the whole sequence of events. Culture matters. I found myself wondering what that woman in the lift would have thought, if like me, she could have visited the township where Bishop Monument grew up. Emondlo is a sprawling ‘scab’ of a place, built on the side of a rock batholith. It is 20km from a hard top road. In the winter, there is no vegetation at all. The soil is a fine, grey-coloured dust that gets literally everywhere. Monument found his way out of Emondlo, by learning fourlanguages fluently, and then by gaining funding for three University level degrees – one in Electrical Engineering, and two in Theology. Now, he is the Diocesan Bishop of a growing Anglican diocese in southern Africa. He is also one of the youngest Bishops in the world-wide Anglican Communion, which consists of 86million people. At Monument’s consecra-tion, between 9000 and 10000 people gathered with him, to share in his joy, to happily sing God’s praises, and to greet one another, saying ‘Hello’ with a big smile, just as Monument had done in the Airport lift. It is so easy to make snap judgments about people, without knowing anything about who they are, where they have come from, or indeed, what they have been through in their lives. At the start of February, I attended my mother’s 80th birthday. Over tea, she started to talk about ‘The power of a smile’. Perhaps it was because she can remember a time when people seemed to smile more! Whether she is right about this or not, most people would agree that it is hard not to return a smile, if someone smiles at you first. A smile disarms. It crosses cul-tures and breaks down walls. A smiling face reminds us not to judge a person, but to ‘take a second look’. It helps us to see human beings, rather than competitors, or threats, or irrita-tions. A smile helps us to see what God had in mind, back when he was busy ‘imagining’ his creation into being. Recently, the two incidents I have described above, have had me thinking.... ‘Wouldn’t it be a good experiment, over Lent, to see what happens when you are the first to smile.’ Surely, it has got to be worth a go! Thanks to the eight Anglicans who came to the ‘Moving Mountains’ launch event at PMC on the 16th Feb 2017. Since the evening, one person has told me

meet again on Thursday 27th April at the Cottage Wood Centre, to begin praying, and making plans for the Inglewood area. We need to get involved.

Smiling is infectious,

You catch it like the flu,

When someone smiled at me today,

I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner

and someone saw my grin.

When he smiled I realised

I’d passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile,

Then I realised its worth,

A single smile, just like mine

Could travel round the earth.

So, if you feel a smile begin, don’t leave it undetected. Let’s start an epidemic quick, and

get the world infected.
