The attached will be used in the promotion of Gardeners World where Our Lady of Fatima School entered the Meal in a Barrow competition with all home grown crops to produce a Golden anniversary salad to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of the school and Gardeners’ World. Mrs Khatun, Senior Play Leader in our Before and After School Club has continued to develop the herb garden area with the ‘Gardening Gang’. The Health for Life committee raised the crops from seed in our weekly meetings. They transplanted them into the outdoor raised beds before selecting the strongest plants for the final display. One of our Year 5 girls and her mum made a very sophisticated scarecrow to protect our crops. She named the scarecrow Chloe, after her "special friend" when she was in Reception Class. Professional photographers visited school to take the pictures for official promotion flyers for this nationally recognised event, which will be held at the NEC from 15th-18th June 2017. Well done to everyone for their green fingers and gardening skills!

Meal in a Barrow – Midlands School competition at BBC Gardeners’ World Live, 15 – 18 June, NEC Birmingham

In the year that BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World celebrates fifty glorious years, BBC Gardeners’ World Live will be

hosting fifty local schools in the hugely popular Meal in a Barrow competition, brought to you by Health for Life

and The Conservation Volunteers!

The fifty schools which span the East and West Midlands have been tasked to plant up barrows, kindly supplied by

Bull Barrow with compost supplied by Pro-Grow, with all the plants to create a deliciously fresh and tasty summer

recipe. See if your local school is taking part at bbcgardenersworldlive.com. The competition is a great way for

teachers to get their school groups involved in gardening, inspiring them with how easy and fulfilling it can be to

grow their own ingredients. But the fun doesn’t stop there as the kids’ imaginations run wild with props and creative

flair making the barrows a joy to behold.

In the year that BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World turns 50, organisers are thrilled to welcome Our Lady Fatima Catholic

Primary School in the competition who also celebrate their Golden Jubilee this year.

Nuala Levack, class teacher in charge of Health for Life throughout Our Lady Fatima Catholic Primary School in

Harborne said “We’ve been really pleased to take part in the Meal in a Barrow competition at BBC Gardeners’ World

Live this year. Getting the school children hands on in the garden is an unbeatable experience – it helps them

understand the natural world and issues such as sustainability. We’ve been growing all the plants for our barrow

from seed, and the children are really enjoying the whole process from start to finish. In the year that our school is

also celebrating its Golden Jubilee, it feels like the perfect year for us to be involved at BBC Gardeners’ World Live and

we can’t wait to take the kids along to the Show to see our Meal in a Barrow in situ with the other 49!”

From gazpacho to pizza – what recipes will the children have planted up this year? There’s only one way to find out.

Book your tickets (tickets for under 18s are free at the weekend) to come along to the show to find out where the

kids imaginations have taken them and cast a vote for your favourite.
