Getting Rid of Earwigs

I am a gardener from Dowling. Three years ago, I had aterrible problem with earwigs eating my flowers. I foundthis recipe and tried it. Wow!! It was better than any store-bought earwig killer or anything I had tried before, and it'snontoxic. Now it is my only earwig killer so I'm passing iton to you. Bait for Earwigs: Equal parts of soy sauce, cooking oil, andmolasses or corn syrup. The molasses or syrup is bait toattract them, the oil doesn't allow them to crawl back out,the soy sauce makes the mixture dark so they think it is justa hole, and the salt finishes them off. Put it in a smallcontainer. I use those small scoops from laundry soap andplace a stone on top, but you can use any small container, even the bottom of a soda or water bottle and anything fora lid. Cover 1/2 inch of the bottom of the container with themixture and bury it up to the brim in the soil where youhave a problem with them. Prop a lid over it so it doesn'tget diluted by rain and so it is a nice dark place for them tohide for the day...ha. When you prop the lid, leave a smallspace for them to crawl into the container. You might haveto wait a couple of days for it to work, but I never have to.The first time I tried it, I used a baby food bottle and it wasfull to the brim with little grey baby earwigs the nextmorning. I was surprised at just how many I did get. Itworks on the red adults too. Try it ! It really works. Checkit every day and when it's full throw it out and replace it.Good Luck ! Myrna Ellis

Beyond the Garden Gates-by Krystyna Koskiniemi

This year's garden tour was a fun-filled day spent withfriends wandering from one breathtaking garden toanother. We strolled up garden paths and enjoyedeye-popping flowers in a variety of bold coloursspilling out of flower beds, pots, and window boxes. Awide variety of grasses stood tall; shrubs, ferns, andtrees utilized patios, fountains, and corners; arbors andpergolas draped in vines created shady spaces; pondswere surrounded by thick grasses, lilies, and hostas;and colourful Koi fish fluttered, attracting yourattention.

Statues greeted us at entrances; garden sculptures werehidden and tucked throughout the gardens. Vegetableswere also integrated into the gardens. One of myfavourites was the garlic beds displayed on a lawn likea centrepiece on a dinner table. There was this and somuch more...all hidden behind the garden gates anddoors of local gardeners.

The Kirkwood Greenhouse is looking for any pottingsupplies you may have left from your gardening...pots

Backyards that were once open empty spaces wereuniquely transformed into outside rooms for privateretreats, healing, family gatherings, reading, andsocializing, or to just sit and take in the loveliness ofthe garden. At times it was hard to believe suchsecluded beauty and tranquility could be located rightin the middle of a city. I think it's a perfect way toescape the chaos of the city... if only for a moment.

Gardens are very much like snowflakes; no two areever the same. Each garden offered a different design, reflecting the taste of each gardener. There was a greatdeal of knowledge and experience, not to mention thepassion, dedication, and pride behind each garden. What a treat for any gardener to get a glimpse ofanother gardener's accomplishments.

As the day ended, I walked away in awe, with freshideas and yes, a bit of envy which only provokedinspiration. Thank you to all the hosts for welcomingfellow gardeners into your private backyard gardens. Two "green" thumbs up to the Sudbury gardeners!
