Wearing White AfterLabor Day

Wearing white clothes afterLabor Day is no longer thefashion foul-up it used to be.The rule originated at the turn ofthe 20th century, whenwell-to-do folks who fled citiesto escape the summer heat alsoleft behind their dark formalclothing. A lightweight, whiteleisure wardrobe was the style atseasonal resorts. When returninghome around Labor Day, thevacationers’ dress code changedback to city attire, andeventually, the trend spread tomainstream America.

School DaysAs a new school year begins,

many grownups will reminisceabout their own days in theclassroom. Study these questionsand share your answers withfriends and family.

• How did you feel aboutschool when you were achild? Did you lookforward to a new schoolyear or wish that summerlasted longer?

• Talk about the school orschools you attended.Where was it located? Howmany students were in yourclass?

• Did you have a favoritesubject in school? Why didyou like it? Are you stillinterested in that subject?

• Many teachers leave lastingimpressions on theirstudents. Did you have afavorite teacher? Whatmade him or her stand out?

• Were you involved in anyextracurricular activities atschool, such as sportsor clubs?

• Describe your friends fromschool. Did you keep intouch with them over theyears?

• Have you ever attended aclass reunion? What wasthat like?

• How do you think schoolsare different now fromwhen you were a student?

Reasons To ReadGetting lost in a good book is

an enjoyment for many people.More than just entertainment, reading has been shown to begood for your health.

Boosts brain power. Much likeexercise for the body, reading abook is a workout for the brain.Critical thinking is requiredto process the text, makeconnections between chaptersand retain information. Thisforges new pathways in the

brain, which can help protectagainst cognitive decline.

Increases empathy. Whenimmersed in reading, especiallya fiction story, we are likely toidentify with the characters andtheir emotions. This may helpus better relate to people inreal life.

Promotes sleep. A bedtimeroutine that includes readingwith dimmed lights sends asignal to the body that it’s timeto wind down. Physical bookswork best at night since theglare from digital devices candisrupt sleep.

Reduces stress. A page-turneroften transports the reader toanother world, providing abreak from worries.
