THE UNIVERSITY

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his sevenh year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006.

Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987.

A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005.

After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified candidate right here at the university.”

Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005.

Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission.

He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum.

Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and five grandchildren.

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 15th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 30th year in athletics administration.

The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU's move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008.

Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including manage-ment and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athlet-ics facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men's swimming, was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department.

GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch's arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last four academic years.

This past year, Gardner-Webb posted its highest finish in the annual Big South Conference Sasser Cup, taking No. 4 in the final standings of the all-sports race. The women’s basketball team captured its first Big South Tournament title, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. Two other teams – women’s soccer and baseball – advanced to the league tournament title game in their respective seasons as well.

Gardner-Webb's final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic perfor-mances by the Bulldogs' student-athletes.

GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men's and women's combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy.

Gardner-Webb's men's soccer team captured the imagination of fans across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007.

Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football and tennis teams, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a suc-cessful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984).

After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in Social Science, Burch, 53, earned his master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a 2009 graduate of Furman University; Danielle, a senior at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (17).

Since 1999, Gardner-Webb University's women's soccer program has been a consistent winner. Throughout their transition from an NCAA Division II program to an NCAA Division I contender, the Runnin' Bulldogs have won matches at a pace never before seen in Boiling Springs, N.C., putting together winning seasons in six of the last nine years and winning at least eight matches in a single-season eight times. Much of the consistency can be attributed to head coach Kevin Mounce, who enters his 13th season at the helm of the Gardner-Webb program with the highest winning percentage of any women's soccer coach in school his-tory. Mounce made an immediate impact upon taking over the program in 1999, leading the Runnin' Bulldogs to their first winning season since 1992, and only their second since the program's inception in 1990. He proceeded to produce winning seasons in 2000 and 2001, as well, marking the first time in school history that GWU had put together three consecutive winning seasons. Mounce helped develop Gardner-Webb into a viable NCAA Division I program early in his tenure in Boiling Springs, as his teams posted an 11-9-1 record against Division I opponents during GWU's two-year provisional status. The 2001 season saw the Runnin' Bulldogs post an overall record of 15-6-1, setting a new school benchmark for wins and taking home the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship in November. Following that tournament, Mounce was named the NCCAA National Women's Soccer Coach of the Year. While 2002 was a rare down season for Mounce at 5-12-1, national women's soccer authority Soccer Buzz ranked Gardner-Webb second in the nation among first-year Division I programs at the conclusion of the season. Mounce quickly got the Runnin' Bulldogs back on track in 2003, rebounding with an 8-9-1 record and guiding GWU to its first-ever spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship with a fifth-place finish in the League. For his efforts, Mounce was recognized by his conference-coaching peers as the A-Sun Coach of the Year. In 2004, Mounce again captained a run for the Runnin' Bulldogs, lead-ing his squad to a fourth-place finish in conference play and another spot

in the Atlantic Sun Championship. This time, however, the Runnin' Bulldogs didn't just make the tournament, the squad advanced to the semifinals with a win over Stetson in the opening round. Forward Leeanna Woodworth led the nation in scoring in 2004, earning A-Sun Player of the Year honors and shattering numerous school records in the process. Liz Kier and Maureen Foley also earned All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors in 2004 as the Runnin' Bulldogs had the type of season that successful programs are built upon. The 2005 season featured four all-conference selections and one aca-demic All-American for Mounce. Woodworth made the All-Conference First-Team for the second consecutive season, while Foley earned second-team accolades for the second straight year. Brittany Woods notched a spot on the second-team after being named to the All-Freshman Team in 2004. Angie Harvey garnered a place on the All-Freshman Team. Woodworth also earned third-team Academic All-America honors, as GWU posted a 5-3-2 record in A-Sun play, finishing third in the conference. While starting several new faces and dealing with the departure of the school's all-time leading scorer in Woodworth, Mounce and his staff started out 5-0 on the 2006 season. During the regular season the team, behind strong defensive play, recorded seven shutouts, which at the time, was the second most in a single season in school history. The Runnin' Bulldogs qualified for their fourth consecutive conference tournament behind a 9-7-2 overall mark and a 3-4-2 league record, advancing to the semifinals before falling to No. 2 seed Stetson. In 2007, Mounce's team was ready for the challenge of being in the A-Sun for the program's final year. Despite facing arguably their toughest schedule in GWU's history and having to deal with a significant number of injuries, the Runnin' Bulldogs put themselves in position to make a run at the conference tournament by ending the season with a 1-0 victory over Campbell. However, GWU was forced out of the tournament on the final day of the regular season. The 2008 season saw the Runnin' Bulldogs make a transition, this time competing in its first year as members of the Big South Conference. With 14 newcomers on the roster, Coach Mounce had his hands full in trying to get

the team to come together as one. The young Runnin' Bulldogs, which played 12 games on the road in 2008, posted a 4-13-2 record overall. Senior Angie Harvey earned First-Team All-Conference honors, while freshman Megan Tremblay was named to the All-Freshmen Team. In 2009, with the challenge of having a tough schedule and being a young team, with 19 underclassmen on the squad, the Runnin' Bulldogs went 12-9 overall with a 6-3 Big South record. Junior Sarah Keyser and sopho-more Megan Reimer earned First-Team All-Conference honors, making it he seventh consecutive season in which Mounce and GWU have had at least one student-athlete receive postseason recognition. The 2010 season saw the Runnin' Bulldogs post nine shutouts, five wins and four draws, as GWU posted a 7-10-5 overall record. GWU posted five wins on the road, as 11 of its 22 matches came away from Greene-Harbison Field in Boiling Springs, N.C. GWU, who finished the conference regular season with a 3-4-2 record, made a run in the Big South Women's Soccer Championship Tournament, defeating Radford 1-0 in the first round and then advancing past Liberty in a shootout in the semifinals to advance to the championship game. In the championship game, Gardner-Webb sent the match to overtime, where High Point scored to win the match 1-0. The Runnin' Bulldogs, which had trouble scoring in 2010, were led by Megan Reimer, who had four goals on the year, while freshman Megan Reynolds and junior Stephanie Benshoof added three goals apiece. Reimer, who was named the Big South Attacking Player of the Week on August 24th, joined Megan Tremblay and Chelsea Hearne on the All-Tournament Team, while Hearne also received a spot on the Big South All-Conference Second team, posting eight shutouts in goal for GWU on the season. Reynolds also received postseason honors, earning a spot on the All-Freshman Team, while Tremblay was named to the Big South All-Academic Team for the second straight year. Under Mounce, Gardner-Webb has seen its scoring totals reach school-record levels. The Runnin' Bulldogs had four players score over 25 points in 1999 - including Kim O'Brien's then school-record total of 44 (18 goals). In 2000, three players scored 16 points or better, led by Michelle Haas' total of 31 points. In 2001, GWU had four players with six or more goals, including 12 by leading scorer Michelle Vander Vaart. The Runnin' Bulldogs have had a pair of 20-point scorers in three of the last four seasons, with Woodworth emerging as one of Mounce's most successful recruits throughout his time at GWU. Woodworth was second on the team in scoring as a freshman in 2002 with 20 points, and led the team in scoring as a sophomore with 27, good enough for third in the A-Sun. She finished with 59 points in 2004 and was complimented well by Kier, who netted 35 points of her own. She capped her career with 29 points during the 2005 campaign. A quality tactician and motivator, Mounce inherited a team in 1999 that had finished the previous season below the .500 mark. He promptly directed a young team to a then-school-record 13 wins and a spot in the South Atlantic Conference tournament finals for the first time in school his-tory. GWU topped national No. 1 Presbyterian in the SAC semifinals, before falling to Catawba in three overtimes in the championship game. With Gardner-Webb's jump to Division I in 2000, Mounce repeated his magic. The Runnin' Bulldogs finished their first year at the highest level of college soccer with an 11-9-1 mark and finished third at the National Christian College Athletic Association's national tournament in Florida. The 2000 campaign marked the first time in Gardner-Webb women's soccer history that a coach had posted consecutive winning seasons. With his team's success in 2001, Mounce totaled 39 wins in only three seasons in Boiling Springs. Now with a 108-12-18 record in 12 years at GWU, Mounce is the school's most successful women's soccer coach ever. Mounce, who picked up his 100th career win in the 2003 regular season finale, now boasts a career ledger of 156-146-22 in two stops as a collegiate head coach - his current post at Gardner-Webb and as the head coach at

Cumberland (Ky.) College in Williamsburg, Ky., from 1995-98. While at Cumberland, an NAIA school, Mounce directed the program to a single-season record for wins (19) and guided the 1997 team to the program's first-ever national ranking (15th). He also led the Indians to two consecutive regular-season conference titles in the Mid-South Conference ('97, '98) and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year in 1997 and in 1998. His team was also the National Christian College tournament runner-up in 1997, and he was selected the NCCAA Region Coach of the Year in 1997. Mounce began his playing career at the University of Kentucky, and then finished his final three years at Sue Bennett College in London, Ky., where he was team captain, defensive MVP, and an all-conference selection. After finishing his playing days, Mounce stayed onboard as an assistant and helped guide the Dragons to a small college national title in 1994-95. Mounce is the founder of the Hat Trick Soccer camp, a popular summer camp based out of Boiling Springs, N.C. He, and his wife, Amanda, along with their daughter, Peyton (4), and son, Riley Noel (2), reside in Shelby, N.C.

Christy Rife is in her first season as assis-tant women's soccer coach at Gardner-Webb, returning to Boiling Springs, N.C., having served as a graduate assistant coach for head coach Kevin Mounce for two seasons in 2001 and 2002. She was on staff when GWU won the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship (NCCAA) in 2001. Rife, formerly Christy Timbers, had a

very successful intercollegiate career at UNC Wilmington, where she received her Bachelors of Science degree in Marketing in 2000. While at UNCW, Rife set a standard for players in the young women's soc-cer program, as she started every game during her four-year career and still holds the school record for most games played with 81 career appearances. A two-time Team MVP and the 1996 Rookie of the Year at UNCW, Rife found the net 53 times for the Seahawks and scored a career-best 19 goals during her junior campaign in 1998. A native of Burke County who still owns nine UNCW school records, was named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Southeast Team in 1998 and 1999 was honored by "Soccer Buzz" Magazine as well both years. In the classroom, Rife was a four-time CAA Scholar-Athlete and was a regular on the Dean's List. Rife was selected to the NSCAA's Scholar-Athlete squad in both 1998 and 1999 and in her senior year, Rife won the coveted Chancellor's Cup Award for Academic Excellence as the program's top female student-athlete with a cumulative GPA of 3.651. Rife has continued her love of soccer, as she has played professionally for the highly regarded Charlotte Lady Eagles since 2001. With the Lady Eagles, Rife helped guide the team to a W-2 National Championship in 2001 and back-to-back Conference Finals appearances in 2009 and 2010. Rife is first in the Lady Eagles' history in career games played with 144, tied for first in career assists with 43 and second in career goals with 73. Rife was elected to the UNCW Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. Coach Rife is married to Josh Rife, a defender on the Charlotte Eagles and a former collegiate standout at Indiana University and Texas Christian University.

Renée Pilch enters her second season as a graduate assistant on the Runnin' Bulldogs women's soccer coach-ing staff. Pilch, who conclud-ed her collegiate career at Belmont University, will primarily work with the goalkeepers. In her first sea-son at GWU in 2010, the Runnin' Bulldogs posted nine total shutouts on the year, five of which were wins and four of which came in 0-0 draws. Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Hearne, earned

Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors, and was not only named to the Big South All-Conference Second-Team, but to the Big South All-Tournament Team as well. Hearne posted 110 saves on the season and recorded a .833 saves percentage on the year en route to seven wins and five ties. In the Big South Championship Tournament, Hearne was strong in goal, allowing only one goal over GWU's three matches, including making two crucial saves in the PK shootout versus Liberty to send GWU to the Championship game. Playing at the University of Pittsburgh and Belmont for two seasons each, Pilch was part of two different goalkeeper units that were among the nation's best in save percentage. Her unit at Belmont in 2009 ranked 35th out of all programs in the nation, leading the Bruins to the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship. In 2008, her team at Belmont won the Atlantic Sun tournament, advancing to the NCAA tournament. Pilch, a native of Peckville, Pa., brings a wealth of knowledge to Gardner-Webb after facing some of the toughest competition in the nation in addition to coaching at some of the nation's top-notch camps over the past few years. Pilch graduated in 2010 from Belmont University with a degree in politi-cal science. She is currently pursuing her masters at Gardner-Webb.

An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training faculty and staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 20 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of nine certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experi-ence. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program recently completed its full accreditation by CAATE, marking an exciting moment in the program’s history. Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education, Wellness and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must com-plete a three-part examination conducted by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s Board of Certification to become Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.
