In 1860, with a force of 1,089 volunteers (called“I Mille,” “The Thousand”), General GiuseppeGaribaldi sailed from Genoa to Marsala, Sicily.Against overwhelming odds, he and his dedicatedmen fought their way north, initiating themovement that led to the creation of the Bell’Italiawe know today. On March 17, 1861, the creationof a united Italian nation was proclaimed. Inhonor of the 150th anniversary of Italy, theGaribaldi-Meucci Museum launches, at thevery place in America where General Garibaldireceived refuge in 1850, The RecognitionWalkway project to support the museum and toposition it to meet the challenges of the future.
