A fast, fun and “Amazing” weekend This past weekend Outdoor Recreation hosted three separate events as part of the annual Winter Sports Festival. The weekend began with the US Forces Championships Invitational Ski/Snowboard race on Saturday followed by a Mini-Bob cross race that evening, and the first ever Amazing Race, Winter Edition on Sunday.

35 racers competed in both skiing and snowboarding categories in all age divisions. This year's hottest competition was in the Men's Masters division with nearly a third of the contestants. Cory Abramson took the gold for the second year in a row, (and also in 2009) with a time of 1:23.13. Cory had stiff competition including Leigh Plowman, who has won several races in the past, and Ben Reed. The fastest racer of the day went to Alex Denikiewicz, (1:19.96), who competed in the German Junior National Championships earlier that day. Alex represented the US in the Giant Slalom race on the Kandahar.

The youngest racer was Thomas Drape, just 4 years old, and although his father accompanied him, he skied both runs without assistance and ended up being only two minutes behind the next competitor.

On the other end of the spectrum, was Donald Sibitzky, 82, who also has the notoriety of being the man who created the Wonderful Wednesday Program here in Garmisch in 1967. A teacher at the elementary school at the time, he and a colleague searched for alternative recreation and fitness opportunities for the children. Busses and equipment were organized and the program was off and running. Donald was surprised and pleased to find out that Wonderful Wednesday was still going strong.

That evening were the awards and the mini-bob race.

Sunday Susan Steinke presented the first ever Amazing Race competition, on snow! Modeled after the popular TV show, teams negotiate Roadblocks and Pit Stops for points. Instead of navigating busses, trains and airports, Susan designed a variation to be done on the slopes in Garmisch. Teams amassed points by completing challenges such as a Bavarian Slap Dance, skiing with a full mug, carrying a Gnome with you, taking team photos in front of various objects, and even bringing in receipts from supporting restaurants.

Eight teams participated in Sundays event; five in the Family category, and three adult. The top family team went to Shred's Babies, from Garmisch headed by Leigh Plowman. The top Adult team was NSO+1 from Oberammergau headed by John Turner. Most notable was the 'Leberkäs' team, a PLTCE student group who came in second place!

Poem in Your Pocket day, 26 April The Garmisch library is celebrating “Poem in Your Pocket Day” on April 26 as part of National Poetry Month. The idea, originally conceived in 2002 in New York, is simple: select a poem you love during National Poetry Month and carry it in your pocket to share with friends and family. Bring it to the library on the 26th and share it with any staff member and receive a homemade cookie!

An Italian Extravaganza August 29—September 2 This is a once in a lifetime trip: five days of gourmet meals, fantastic architecture, and some of the most popular operas. We depart Garmisch early the 29th. After a few short hours, south we begin with a gourmet lunch in Vicenza. After some time to tour Verona, we attend that evening’s performance of Puccini’s “Tosca”. On Thursday, we head back to Vicenza for a tour of the Palladio masterpiece Olympia Theatre, time to wander around Vicenza and enjoy lunch. In the evening, we head back to Verona to attend a performance of Puccini's “Turandot”. The next day, after an early breakfast, we depart for Mantua and a tour of the Palazzo Ducale, have a gourmet lunch at a restaurant in the town square. Once we are full from lunch we proceed to our most southern destination, the walled town of Urbino. Upon our arrival, we check into the hotel then tour the Ducal Palace, (Palazzo Ducale in Italian). On Saturday, there will be plenty of free time to explore this unique town. After breakfast Sunday morning, we start our journey back to Vicenza. Along the way, we stop for a gourmet midday meal along the banks of the Mincio River. Shortly after we settle back into our hotel, we return to Verona in the evening to see a performance of Verdi’s “Aida”. On our final day, we take a leisurely drive along the shore of Lake Garda on our way back to Garmisch.

Spend the afternoon touring this beautiful city, free time for shopping! Bring comfortable walking shoes and don't forget your cameras. Lunch is not included, bring Euros for lunch, snacks, and shopping.

Holiday Weekends - Top Chef Garda Friday, May 25—Monday, May 28 Cost: $450 Enjoy two full days of cooking classes and three nights on the shores of Lake Garda in the lovely town of Torri del Benaco. Breakfasts are included. For dinner we enjoy the meals we prepared in class with wine and coffee for everyone. There will be time on Saturday to explore the area a bit as well.

Munich in the Third Reich Tour Friday, April 20 – Video at 7 p.m.; Sunday, April 22 – 8 a.m. trip to Munich Cost: $35 One of the most popular tours is Munich in the Third Reich - a walking tour that was developed quite a few years ago to coincide with an exhibition that the Munich Stadtmuseum was presenting. We start with a video presentation and a geographical and historical orientation in the PLTCE Auditorium (Bldg. 253) on Friday at 7 p.m. On Sunday, we meet at the Garmisch Train Station just before 8 a.m. and take the 8:04 a.m. train to Munich. There we recreate the Bier Hall Putsch exactly as it happened in 1923. After lunch, we visit the site of the Munich Accords (where Czechoslovakia ceased to be an independent unified country) and see some other places associated with the Nazi movement. This is an extremely interesting tour, somewhat like touring an urban battlefield. We cannot pretend that there is not a lot of walking, or that this is a short day. Most participants are somewhat exhausted after we storm-troop our way from one end of Munich to another. However, we have not had anybody say to shorten it.

Prague: Weekend with Bohemian Beers Friday, April 27- Sunday, April 29, Departs at 4:15 p.m. Cost: $270, $45 per night for a single room Let’s go to the place everyone wants to see in the “new Europe.” Prague is often on the top of everyone’s list of places to visit in the old world. We leave at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, March 2. We should arrive at our hotel shortly after 10 p.m. There will be a Friday night orientation tour of Prague, including how to get back to the hotel if your experience of the city is going to include any of the very late night spots! Saturday starts with a daytime tour that includes a few more touristic sights. We will arrange tickets for those who want to see an opera in the evening. Prague has it all; museums, shopping, churches, art, and of course, architecture. Paul will conduct a guided tour of the Franz Kafka museum as well. There will be a fair amount of free time to explore on your own. Three full nights in Prague and two days before we load up for

the ride back to Bavaria. On the way home we will stop in Plzen to sample some “Plzener Urquel” beer at a terrific restaurant. Estimated arrival time back in Garmisch is about 8 p.m. Do not forget that you need a passport!

Water Works! Tuesday, May 1, 7:50 a.m. at the Garmisch Train Station Cost: Transportation - $15; Park entry €38 or €36 If you thought “Water Works” is only a semi-desirable property in Monopoly you might be wondering how does it work? Trust us! Water does Work! Water can be extremely therapeutic, relaxing, calming, exhilarating, and lots of good fun! I am speaking especially of the absolute Disney-like Water world known as the Erdinger Therme! Bring Euros for all the food and drink you plan to consume and bring €38 if you are doing the “full European experience” or €36 if you are going to wear a swimsuit all day (it is cheaper if you want to avoid the fun in the “textile free” areas). It may seem expensive but trust me: this one is extraordinary and worth every penny!

Leisure Trips and Tours Venice & Verona Weekend Friday, May 4 - Sunday, May 6 Cost $290, $45 per night for a single room We leave Garmisch at 4:15 p.m. and stay two nights in a Vicenza area hotel. We get up early the next morning for breakfast (6:30 a.m.) and the bus ride to Venice (6:50 a.m.) for an all day tour. Naturally, there are wonderful things to see - great art and architec-ture, pigeons in St. Mark’s Square, gondolas etc. and good places to eat! Return to Vicenza and then, on Sunday, it is on to Verona for a tour of the Romeo and Juliet city with the great Roman Arena and a wonderful restaurant. We take about three hours to gorge ourselves before arriving in Garmisch about 9 p.m. Plan to bring about 120-140 € to cover museum entrances, food, public transportation, and some souvenirs. Do not forget your passport!

Partenkirchen Walking Tour Wednesday, May 30, 1 p.m. Artillery Kaserne Gate Cost: Tour $7; Bus €1.50 We do an introductory walk through historic Partenkirchen, the older of the two twin towns and the one that many Americans rarely venture to! It will include some history as well as a nod to the places where one can get the best hot chocolate and the best pizza. We will also point out the Irish Pub and a few of the more popular restaurants. Historic highlights include the “Plague Chapel” put up during the Thirty Years’ War, some great frescoes, the State School for Wood-working, the Partenkirchen Kurpark, and some wonderful stories about Ludwig the Bavarian, Henry the Lion, and St. Mark. Come and check it out. After lunch on May 30, we will meet at the

city bus just outside the Artillery Kaserne Gate and take the bus that arrives there at 1:10 p.m. We ride the bus to the first stop past the train station; continue walking in the same direction until you get to the traffic light (Rathausplatz, corner of Hauptstrasse and Ludwig-strasse).

Ballets, Concerts, and Operas in Munich Cost: $12 for transportation only One of the best things about living in the countryside around Garmisch-Partenkirchen is that our beautiful village is located so close to Munich, the Bavarian capital city with all the cultural opportunities that anyone could ask for. The Iceman / Bolzano

August 18 Where were you on that momentous day September 19, 1991? Erika and Helmut Simon were taking a walk near the bor-der of Austria and Italy. The weather had been exceptionally warm in the high Alps and there was a lot of snow melting from the retreating glaciers. Shortly after leaving one of the marked trails they chanced upon a dead body stuck in the ice. Investigation has confirmed that the body is a Neolithic man who lived 5300 years ago! So join us for a visit to Bolzano Italy and see the "Iceman" known as "Oetzi".


ARMY EMERGENCY RELIEF

T h e A r m y E m e r g e n c y R e l i e f Campaign for 2012 is in progress and runs through May 15. Army Emergency Relief is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated solely to "Helping the Army Take Care of its Own.” Army Emergency Relief was established in 1942 in response to a need for financial assistance and support for Soldiers and their Families. Army Emergency Relief provides emergency financial assistance in the form of no-interest loans and/or grants.

Since 2005 Army Emergency Relief has added several new programs and categories of assistance to include dependent dental care, cranial helmets, rental cars, and furniture in an effort to provide Solders with greater access to Army Emergency Relief funds in their times of need. In addition, Army Emergency Relief provides scholarships to children and spouses of Active Duty and retired Soldiers, financial support to surviving Families of Fallen Soldiers, and grants to widows and Wounded Warriors.

Did you know that Irving Berlin donated the music rights from his 1940’s hit movie “This is the Army”? With every purchase of the movie, a percentage goes to Army Emergency Relief and Army Emergency Relief holds the original film. In addition, boxer Joe Lewis supported Army Emergency Relief by donating his winning purse from several fights in the early 1940’s.

Since its incorporation, Army Emergency Relief has provided more than $1.3 billion to more than 3.3 million Soldiers, Families and Retirees. In 2011, Army Emergency Relief provided more than $8 million to 4,351 Army Spouses and Children and from 2003-2011 in excess of $2 million has been provided to Wounded Warriors through the Wounded Warrior Grant program. Eighty-nine cents of every dollar contributed goes directly to help Soldiers and their Families.

ACS Congratulates Community Adult Volunteer of the Quarter, Ms. Sarah Duffy!!!

Ms. Sarah Duffy was officially recognized as the ACS Community Volunteer of the Quarter Thursday, 8 March 2012. She was honored at the Garmisch Town Hall by the Garrison Commander, Mr. John M. Cavanaugh and several community members. This recognition was integrated as part of the Grand Opening of the Pete Burk Center and Town Hall meeting.

Ms. Sarah was nominated by the Garmisch Elementary/Middle School for her outstanding volunteerism and dedication to the programs she enhances. As a talented photographer, Ms. Duffy has teamed with several GEMS teachers to enhance their programs with the use of photography. Her additional commitments include: volunteering as a math tutor, assisting with Wonderful Wednesday program, regular school lunch and cafeteria duties. Ms. Duffy is a talented woman who gives generously; many programs have benefited as a result of her time, talent, resources, and insight! Wood Shop Safety Class This class is a prerequisite to use the shop’s power tools and machines. Upon comple-tion you receive the MWR Arts and Crafts Qualification Card, which is honored at all MWR crafts facilities and you may use the shop for do-it-yourself projects. Two-hour class. By appointment only. Fee: $20. Adults only.

Upholstery Class Learn how to re-upholster chairs, sofas, etc. Bring your own furniture as a class project. Six hours of instruction. By appointment only. Fee: $35. Adults only.

Basic Ceramics Pouring Class You will learn how to pour and finish while making one easy class project to take home. Two 2 hour evening or afternoon classes. Please schedule an appointment in advance. Beginners Class. Fee $20 - includes instruction and materials (slip, paints and glazes, shop and firing fees) for one small project.

Hand Building with Clay - Pottery Class Your hands are the best tools you have! Explore the world of hand built ceramics. Learn the techniques of pinching, coiling and slab work. Creativity and originality are encouraged while you learn about the basics of using clay. We will make cups, bowls, flowerpots, Easter eggs, or whatever you imagine! This Beginners Class consists of two sessions, four hours total. Fee is $48, instruction, enough clay for your first project, paints, glazes, use of tools, brushes and everything you need to start creating. Advance sign up please.

Furniture Building /Restoration Bring your piece in need of repair in for a cost-free as-sessment. We do visit you at your home for assess-ments for larger furniture or custom furniture building. Upholstery and restoration of old pieces can also be done. Picture Matting, Framing and Poster-Mounting Choose from over 400 wooden or metal moldings. If you don’t have the time to do-it-yourself use the custom shop’s great service. Qualified staff is available to help you select moldings and mats to make your picture look stunning. We also offer professional poster mounting on foam, oil painting restoration and stretching.

Sewing Services You have never been good with a sewing machine or have no time to do it? No problem, the Crafts Tree’s qualified staff will do it for you.

Portrait Services Visit the Crafts Tree’s Portrait Studio for your next fam-ily portrait! Lots of package variations available. You can also order a CD with your entire portfolio. We will also do professional outdoor portrait sessions and take your picture in your favorite Garmisch locations. Please book in advance.

Photo Printing Self Service The shop provides a user friendly self service printing kiosk using Kodak paper. Bring your digital pictures on card, disk, USB or blue tooth and turn them into great pictures, collages or post cards at minimal price. You can choose colored borders or even type in your text to personalize a post card for example.

Spin (cardio) This is an intense indoor cycling workout using various cycling techniques from hill climbing and sprinting to peddling at different tensions. Easily modified for beginners.

Yoga Fit (strength/flexibility) A class designed to improve the health, per-formance, and mental acuity of individuals seeking to improve their overall level of fitness. This style of Hatha Yoga blends balance, strength, power, and flexibility into a fitness format doable by individuals of any fitness level.

Spinning-n-Yoga A combination of cardiovascular and flexibility workout.

TurboKick® (cardio) TurboKick® is the ultimate cardiovascular chal-lenge that's a unique blend of intense intervals strength/endurance training, and a relaxing cool-down. TurboKick®, the live version of Tur-boJam®, requires no previous kickboxing experi-ence or equipment, just bring your attitude and desire to have fun!
