Police are continuing to in-vestigate a number of thefts of plant machinery and building materials from the building site at Spout Lane. Enquiries by officers have revealed that, on a number of occasions, local residents have seen persons acting suspiciously at the time offences have been

taking place, but have not reported it immediately via the emergency 999 call system. Residents are urged to call the Police immediately if they see either individu-als or indeed suspicious vehicles on, or on the pe-rimeter of the site, at times when the site is closed.

The Friends of the National Railway Museum – North East are holding a talk at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon, on Saturday 29th March at 11.30am.

Les Paul will give a talk on ‘Aerial views of Tyne and Wear in the 1970s’ inside the Hackworth Room, which is in the Collection Building. All are welcome and admis-sion is free.

Stephen Lee Sanderson, formerly of Dennison Terrace, Ferryhill, and now resides at Edward Street, Eldon Lane, recently attended the Magistrates’ Court at Newton Aycliffe. He pleaded guilty to two charges of burglary from garages in Osborne Terrace, Coundon, where, on the night of 9th February he stole a tyre, a foot pump and fireworks. On the same night he stole a torch from a vehicle belonging to Kembles Motors in Coundon. The defendant asked for

several other offences to be taken into consid-eration and matters were adjourned until 20th March, when the Probation Services will provide a pre-sentence report. The District Judge altered bail conditions in order that the defendant’s curfew, from 8pm - 6am, could be monitored by electronic tag. A youth, who assisted Sanderson by acting as look-out, will appear before the Youth Court on 24th March.

Burglaries and theft

Neal Gallagher pleaded guilty to a charge that on 20th December, in Coop-erative Street, Shildon, he grew 30 cannabis plants. The Crown claimed that this could be labelled as a cannabis farm capable of supply and requested full forfeiture and destruction of the drugs and equip-ment, as well as indicating that the matter should go to Crown Court.

The District Judge told the defendant’s solicitor that he did not intend to give his client false hope but matters might be dealt with at the Magistrates’ Court. In the meantime he re-quested a full pre-sentence report, leaving all options open, from the Probation Services. Gallagher will return to the court at Newton Aycliffe on 12th March.

Age UK’s ‘Come Dine With Us’ project, which has been running as a pilot over the past 18 months in Shildon, Durham, Stanley, and Bishop Auckland, has been selected to receive a Big Lottery Fund Silver Dreams Flagship Grant.A spokesperson for Age UK commented, “This is fantastic news for older people in County Durham. The grant will enable us to substantially increase our project’s activities and deliver it in new areas of the county.“Through the project we will be working to improve older people’s ability to access, grow, cook, and enjoy healthy food together, whilst raising awareness of what consti-tutes good nutrition as we get older. “The current health pro-motion messages such as low fat and small portions are not suitable for many older people who are un-derweight and may be at risk of malnutrition. “Our nutrition course, which includes a board game, has proved very popular and we are looking forward to rolling this out to reach more older people.“We are also taking this opportunity to rename our project. The new name will be ‘Come Eat Together’.“We will also have a new website at www.comeeat-together.org and a new

Then, on the last Monday of the month, also from 12 noon, Clare and Jane at Platform 7 Cafe at Lo-comotion provide a warm welcome to older people to ‘Come Dine with Us’.It is £4.60 for a delicious hot meal with a dessert and freshly brewed tea or coffee.
