First graders have been busy learning about vowel teams and R controls in Phonics Vowel teams are two vowels together in a word The first vowel does the talking and the second one does the walking R is bossy and changes each vowel sound so it is not short or long For our 100th Day of School we read 100 books We kept track of how many books we read with unifix cubes 100 went so fast we decided to go to 200 With so many famous Americans having birthdays in February weve had much to learn and write about We even wrote what we would do if we were President Math class has us adding and subtracting with tens and two-digit numbers Weve even tried a little regrouping with addition Frigid temps and so much indoor recess prompted us to celebrate Valentines Day with a paper snowball fight in the gym It was a lot of fun but we look forward to warmer temps and being able to go outside

March is Music in Our Schools Month We are excited to share activities and work that shows how music impacts our lives throughout the month In our hallway you will find pictures of us from music and music events taken throughout the year In March kindergarten will continue to learn the difference between steady beat and rhythm and play these rhythms on classroom instruments First grade will explore popular nursery rhymes and added movement and B sections through composition Second grade started two part singing through rounds and ostinatos and is accompanying themselves on the Orff instruments Third grade is enjoying a unit on form and multicultural music through folk dancing Fourth grade is preparing for their field trip to the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra Concert on March 5th by learning about the instruments of the orchestra as well as a Beethoven composer study Fifth grade is learning about music and its relationship to history through Pete Seegerrsquos folk music and goal for social justice In March the elementary grades will also begin learning songs for their spring concert on May 3rd The choirs also have a busy month as contest season begins Wersquod love to see everyone at the Pops Concert on March 5th The bands and choirs have been preparing some neat arrangements for the evening March 7th six students from the middle school choir will attend the Celebration of Music Festival honor choir in Brandon March 11th the middle school choir will be singing the National Anthem at the Stampede Hockey game March 12th is high school solosmall ensemble contest at Augustana University March 28th is middle school large group contest in Beresford Between all these events the choirs will prepare for their spring concert May 15th as well as high school large group contest and middle school solo contest also coming up this spring Itrsquos a fun but whirlwind of a month We hope to see you at the many events Thank you for supporting music in our schools

Friday Feb 9 ended ldquoCabin Feverrdquo Week which included dress-up days and a theme that revolved around The Olympics On Friday many of the students were dressed in red white and blue to show their American pride It couldnrsquot have been held at a more opportune time for the 6th graders as Feb is the month that middle school students can take part in the American Legion Auxiliary essaypoetry contest This yearrsquos essay theme was ldquoWhat can I personally do to promote Americanism in my school or communityrdquo

After brainstorming ideas with their classmates students got busy writing Once they completed their first drafts they were able to share them with their teacher to get some editing amp revision advice before

the final copy Students came up with great ideas of how they could help their school and community and are even sharing some personal stories of their experiences about friendsfamily that are in the military

Once the essays are done they will be entered into the local contest and from there the winning essay will be sent onto the District contest and then the State Granted there can be only one winning essay that is sent on but all of the work and thought put in makes them all winners

March is already here and I think we are all questioning what happened to the first two months of 2018 But no one is more ready for these next three months to zoom by than the seniors We have been staying busy in both AP and Brit Lit but spring fever has already hit In AP English we are finally moving into poetry but not before refreshing our background on mythology as that is something that is frequently alluded to in literature Also at the beginning of May the students will be taking their AP Literature and Composition Exam and if they receive a high enough score may get credit for college level English which is a definite benefit as they approach that next step in the fall In British Literature we are in the middle of a murder mystery unit by reading the Agatha Christie novel Murder on the Orient Express as well as a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle classic The Hound of the Baskervilles featuring the infamous Sherlock Holmes and the students have some very interesting theories as to ldquowhodunitrdquo The sophomores just finished up their research paper and will begin reading some Civil War era-focused novels including The Red Badge of Courage and Killer Angels Wersquoll wrap up the year with Shakespearersquos Julius Caesar as we continue to work on reading strategies analysis and writing skills While this semester there are students tackling their greatest fearhellippublic speaking At the turn of the year a new group of students came into speech The students have given over a half dozen speeches already and we have at least that many more to go Students are quickly figuring out their strengths and weaknesses and tailoring their public speaking skills to fit accordingly We continue to work on our writing analyzing and communication skills in journalism The students have improved greatly from the beginning of the year The Blue Ink still comes out the last day of the school week each week It is posted on my website (ka080k12sdus) as well as the school website

Algebra II The Algebra II students are currently wrapping up a chapter dealing with exponential and logarithmic functions Students are understanding exponential growth and decay and how it relates to the real world They are learning the properties of logarithms and are able to solve equations involving those

Geometry The Geometry students are currently learning about right triangles and how they relate to trigonometry They are using the Pythagorean Theorem and the Law of Sines and Cosines to solve problems

Calculus The Calculus students are in the middle of a chapter involving the applications of differentiation The students are using calculus to analyze graphs of functions and use the derivative of a function to determine the functions maximum and minimum values They are also using limits to identify any asymptotes of the functions graph

This has been a fast moving year and right now all eyes are on the Olympics All of my classes are participating in our own version of the Winter games The elementary has been doing a lot of 23 or 4 person bobsledding We use scooters for this event and it has been very popular We also have done the luge event with our roller racers skiing speed skating and still to come will be team cross country skiing A lot of students have been tuned into them since they know were participating in class

In our Fitness for Life class the students have decided their own country and we our giving point value for each event that take place Thus far

the events we have done are bobsledding Luge ski jump relay race still to come are hockey curling biathalon and ending with team figure skating performance (Done without Skates) Each one of these has its own twist to make sure all events are done with fun and entertainment But along with that the physical exercise and the teambuilding has been rewarding As we move into May the K-5 students are always excited for Field Day No date has been set

As we enter the downhill portion of the school year sometimes keeping things fresh is required With that being said the Freshmen and Junior English classes have taken their vocabulary to a new level

Unit 7 vocab was introduced to the students in a completely different way Instead of simply doing assignments the classes were given a powerpoint presentation over the decade of the 1970s and given instructions to pick a song from the 70s and implement their vocabulary into that song Needless to say we had some wonderful results Some students completed the task using music video formats from artists such as Stevie Wonder - Superstitious ACDC - Highway to Hell ABBA - Dancing Queen Bee Gees - Staying Alive and Jackson 5 - I Want Your Back just to name a few

All the students did a fantastic job and it underscores the fact that we here at GHS have an abundance of talented students that walk through our building on a daily basis I for one am looking forward to seeing what the decades of the 80s (Unit 8) and 90s (Unit 9) bring to the table Have a great spring

United States HistoryThe 8th grade have recently wrapped up their studies on the War of 1812 and the first 10 Presidents of the United States During this unit the students worked in small groups to create childrenrsquos books The students worked collaboratively on the project and presented the books to the 5th grade classes This project had assessments for both Social Studies and Language Arts

GeographyThe 7th graders are currently studying the recent history of Europe and how that relates to the world Recently they finished a journal project on the Holocaust During this project they journaled from the perspective of a child going through the concentration camps during the war The creativity that the students have displayed is very interesting to see Next the students are learning about the Cold War

World HistoryThe 6th grade are learning about ancient Greece They just wrapped up a comparison of Athens and Sparta interviewing each other to help understand Following the wrap up of the Peloponnesian Wars the students have recently started to compare the Greek gods and goddesses The project they are currently working on is to create their own godgoddess using inspiration from the past

With summer getting closer itrsquos time to start thinking about what your kids will be doing during the summer months From sports camps to swimming people usually donrsquot think about art opportunities for kids in their area so I thought Id share with you some of my favorite places to take my kiddos and for me to get some creative time in as well The Washington Pavilion offers multiple art classes from Elementary to High school level Classes are generally a week long and include many different fun art activities these include but are not limited to clay making cartooning drawing painting photography and even jewelry making The Museum of Visual Materials is also a great place to get your art on The Museum offers many choices such as childrenrsquos activites crafts nights classes camps and exhibits You can build a creation at their LEGO station decorate dolls and landscapes in and around a Barbie house build a structure on their imagination playground or create a masterpiece in their craft area In Faithe Gallery the main gallery features local and international artist They have a new artist featured every 2 months All activities are free to the public so get our there and check it out Another fun way to get the entire family involved is to go on the Sculpture Walk in Downtown Sioux Falls Sculpture Walk is an exciting exhibit of sculptures displayed year-round from the Washington Pavillion to Falls Park The exhibits change yearly so if you went last summer this year they will with new sculptures to look at From May through September you can vote for your favorite sculpture which is deemed the ldquoPeoplersquos Choice Awardrdquo The sculpture is purchased at the end of the exhibit year for the cityrsquos permanent collection Other places that offer creative workshops in the area are The Gypsy Trading Company in Brandon just follow their facebook page to get info and times on their fun workshops like hand lettering and chalk painting Also check out AR Workshop in Sioux Falls if crafts for your bedroom or house is more your style Hope to see you guys out and about this summer taking in all the great art opportunities this area has to offer

From March 7 - May 4 South Dakota students in grades 3-8 amp 11 will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment in English Language Arts and Mathematics Fifth eighth and eleventh grade students will be administered a Science test as well The purpose of this letter is to give you an understanding of the test It will also give you a few ideas for helping your student do herhis best on the test

The Smarter Balanced assessments measure student achievement in relation to our state standards in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics In addition to providing overall scores in those two subjects score reports will provide information on student performance in the following areas

o English Language Arts reading writing listening and research

o Math concepts and procedures problem solving and modelingdata analysis and communicating reasoning

Your child will take the tests on a computer The assessments are unique in the way they adapt to be appropriate for your childrsquos level of learning As a result each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude towards testing These tests are not timed but we estimate that it will take a similar amount of time as did past assessments We estimate the English assessment will take 35 hours and the math assessment will take 25 hours

While your childrsquos grades will not be impacted by their performance on this assessment this assessment serves as a way for the school to see how well we are helping students meet rigorous learning standards Shortly after the testing period is complete you will receive a report showing your childrsquos scores

With summer getting closer itrsquos time to start thinking about what your kids will be doing during the summer months From sports camps to swimming people usually donrsquot think about art opportunities for kids in their area so I thought Id share with you some of my favorite places to take my kiddos and for me to get some creative time in as well The Washington Pavilion offers multiple art classes from Elementary to High school level Classes are generally a week long and include many different fun art activities these include but are not limited to clay making cartooning drawing painting photography and even jewelry making The Museum of Visual Materials is also a great place to get your art on The Museum offers many choices such as childrenrsquos activites crafts nights classes camps and exhibits You can build a creation at their LEGO station decorate dolls and landscapes in and around a Barbie house build a structure on their imagination playground or create a masterpiece in their craft area In Faithe Gallery the main gallery features local and international artist They have a new artist featured every 2 months All activities are free to the public so get our there and check it out Another fun way to get the entire family involved is to go on the Sculpture Walk in Downtown Sioux Falls Sculpture Walk is an exciting exhibit of sculptures displayed year-round from the Washington Pavillion to Falls Park The exhibits change yearly so if you went last summer this year they will with new sculptures to look at From May through September you can vote for your favorite sculpture which is deemed the ldquoPeoplersquos Choice Awardrdquo The sculpture is purchased at the end of the exhibit year for the cityrsquos permanent collection Other places that offer creative workshops in the area are The Gypsy Trading Company in Brandon just follow their facebook page to get info and times on their fun workshops like hand lettering and chalk painting Also check out AR Workshop in Sioux Falls if crafts for your bedroom or house is more your style Hope to see you guys out and about this summer taking in all the great art opportunities this area has to offer

From March 7 - May 4 South Dakota students in grades 3-8 amp 11 will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment in English Language Arts and Mathematics Fifth eighth and eleventh grade students will be administered a Science test as well The purpose of this letter is to give you an understanding of the test It will also give you a few ideas for helping your student do herhis best on the test

The Smarter Balanced assessments measure student achievement in relation to our state standards in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics In addition to providing overall scores in those two subjects score reports will provide information on student performance in the following areas

o English Language Arts reading writing listening and research

o Math concepts and procedures problem solving and modelingdata analysis and communicating reasoning

Your child will take the tests on a computer The assessments are unique in the way they adapt to be appropriate for your childrsquos level of learning As a result each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude towards testing These tests are not timed but we estimate that it will take a similar amount of time as did past assessments We estimate the English assessment will take 35 hours and the math assessment will take 25 hours

While your childrsquos grades will not be impacted by their performance on this assessment this assessment serves as a way for the school to see how well we are helping students meet rigorous learning standards Shortly after the testing period is complete you will receive a report showing your childrsquos scores

Thoughts from Middle School Language ArtsSubmitted by Mrs Kari Stoltenberg

Friday Feb 9 ended ldquoCabin Feverrdquo Week which included dress-up days and a theme that revolved around The Olympics On Friday many of the students were dressed in red white and blue to show their American pride It couldnrsquot have been held at a more opportune time for the 6th graders as Feb is the month that middle school students can take part in the American Legion Auxiliary essaypoetry contest This yearrsquos essay theme was ldquoWhat can I personally do to promote Americanism in my school or communityrdquo

After brainstorming ideas with their classmates students got busy writing Once they completed their first drafts they were able to share them with their teacher to get some editing amp revision advice before

the final copy Students came up with great ideas of how they could help their school and community and are even sharing some personal stories of their experiences about friendsfamily that are in the military

Once the essays are done they will be entered into the local contest and from there the winning essay will be sent onto the District contest and then the State Granted there can be only one winning essay that is sent on but all of the work and thought put in makes them all winners

March is already here and I think we are all questioning what happened to the first two months of 2018 But no one is more ready for these next three months to zoom by than the seniors We have been staying busy in both AP and Brit Lit but spring fever has already hit In AP English we are finally moving into poetry but not before refreshing our background on mythology as that is something that is frequently alluded to in literature Also at the beginning of May the students will be taking their AP Literature and Composition Exam and if they receive a high enough score may get credit for college level English which is a definite benefit as they approach that next step in the fall In British Literature we are in the middle of a murder mystery unit by reading the Agatha Christie novel Murder on the Orient Express as well as a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle classic The Hound of the Baskervilles featuring the infamous Sherlock Holmes and the students have some very interesting theories as to ldquowhodunitrdquo The sophomores just finished up their research paper and will begin reading some Civil War era-focused novels including The Red Badge of Courage and Killer Angels Wersquoll wrap up the year with Shakespearersquos Julius Caesar as we continue to work on reading strategies analysis and writing skills While this semester there are students tackling their greatest fearhellippublic speaking At the turn of the year a new group of students came into speech The students have given over a half dozen speeches already and we have at least that many more to go Students are quickly figuring out their strengths and weaknesses and tailoring their public speaking skills to fit accordingly We continue to work on our writing analyzing and communication skills in journalism The students have improved greatly from the beginning of the year The Blue Ink still comes out the last day of the school week each week It is posted on my website (ka080k12sdus) as well as the school website

Algebra II The Algebra II students are currently wrapping up a chapter dealing with exponential and logarithmic functions Students are understanding exponential growth and decay and how it relates to the real world They are learning the properties of logarithms and are able to solve equations involving those

Geometry The Geometry students are currently learning about right triangles and how they relate to trigonometry They are using the Pythagorean Theorem and the Law of Sines and Cosines to solve problems

Calculus The Calculus students are in the middle of a chapter involving the applications of differentiation The students are using calculus to analyze graphs of functions and use the derivative of a function to determine the functions maximum and minimum values They are also using limits to identify any asymptotes of the functions graph

Remind your child that they are welcome to come in for extra help prior to school or they can also come during ICU for extra help when needed

This has been a fast moving year and right now all eyes are on the Olympics All of my classes are participating in our own version of the Winter games The elementary has been doing a lot of 23 or 4 person bobsledding We use scooters for this event and it has been very popular We also have done the luge event with our roller racers skiing speed skating and still to come will be team cross country skiing A lot of students have been tuned into them since they know were participating in class

In our Fitness for Life class the students have decided their own country and we our giving point value for each event that take place Thus far

the events we have done are bobsledding Luge ski jump relay race still to come are hockey curling biathalon and ending with team figure skating performance (Done without Skates) Each one of these has its own twist to make sure all events are done with fun and entertainment But along with that the physical exercise and the teambuilding has been rewarding As we move into May the K-5 students are always excited for Field Day No date has been set

Jump Rope for Heart is coming up in April So please be looking for flyers and information coming on that American Heart Association is really encouraging the online participation Flyers will be sent home in the beginning of April with information This website can help you find out more heartorgjump

As we enter the downhill portion of the school year sometimes keeping things fresh is required With that being said the Freshmen and Junior English classes have taken their vocabulary to a new level

Unit 7 vocab was introduced to the students in a completely different way Instead of simply doing assignments the classes were given a powerpoint presentation over the decade of the 1970s and given instructions to pick a song from the 70s and implement their vocabulary into that song Needless to say we had some wonderful results Some students completed the task using music video formats from artists such as Stevie Wonder - Superstitious ACDC - Highway to Hell ABBA - Dancing Queen Bee Gees - Staying Alive and Jackson 5 - I Want Your Back just to name a few

All the students did a fantastic job and it underscores the fact that we here at GHS have an abundance of talented students that walk through our building on a daily basis I for one am looking forward to seeing what the decades of the 80s (Unit 8) and 90s (Unit 9) bring to the table Have a great spring

Unit 7 vocab was introduced to the students in a completely different way Instead of simply doing assignments the classes were given a powerpoint presentation over the decade of the 1970s and given instructions to pick a song from the 70s and implement their vocabulary into that song Needless to say we had some wonderful results Some students completed the task using music video formats from artists such as Stevie Wonder - Superstitious ACDC - Highway to Hell ABBA - Dancing Queen Bee Gees - Staying Alive and Jackson 5 - I Want Your Back just to name a few

All the students did a fantastic job and it underscores the fact that we here at GHS have an abundance of talented students that walk through our building on a daily basis I for one am looking forward to seeing what the decades of the 80s (Unit 8) and 90s (Unit 9) bring to the table Have a great spring

United States HistoryThe 8th grade have recently wrapped up their studies on the War of 1812 and the first 10 Presidents of the United States During this unit the students worked in small groups to create childrenrsquos books The students worked collaboratively on the project and presented the books to the 5th grade classes This project had assessments for both Social Studies and Language Arts

GeographyThe 7th graders are currently studying the recent history of Europe and how that relates to the world Recently they finished a journal project on the Holocaust During this project they journaled from the perspective of a child going through the concentration camps during the war The creativity that the students have displayed is very interesting to see Next the students are learning about the Cold War

World HistoryThe 6th grade are learning about ancient Greece They just wrapped up a comparison of Athens and Sparta interviewing each other to help understand Following the wrap up of the Peloponnesian Wars the students have recently started to compare the Greek gods and goddesses The project they are currently working on is to create their own godgoddess using inspiration from the past

With summer getting closer itrsquos time to start thinking about what your kids will be doing during the summer months From sports camps to swimming people usually donrsquot think about art opportunities for kids in their area so I thought Id share with you some of my favorite places to take my kiddos and for me to get some creative time in as well The Washington Pavilion offers multiple art classes from Elementary to High school level Classes are generally a week long and include many different fun art activities these include but are not limited to clay making cartooning drawing painting photography and even jewelry making The Museum of Visual Materials is also a great place to get your art on The Museum offers many choices such as childrenrsquos activites crafts nights classes camps and exhibits You can build a creation at their LEGO station decorate dolls and landscapes in and around a Barbie house build a structure on their imagination playground or create a masterpiece in their craft area In Faithe Gallery the main gallery features local and international artist They have a new artist featured every 2 months All activities are free to the public so get our there and check it out Another fun way to get the entire family involved is to go on the Sculpture Walk in Downtown Sioux Falls Sculpture Walk is an exciting exhibit of sculptures displayed year-round from the Washington Pavillion to Falls Park The exhibits change yearly so if you went last summer this year they will with new sculptures to look at From May through September you can vote for your favorite sculpture which is deemed the ldquoPeoplersquos Choice Awardrdquo The sculpture is purchased at the end of the exhibit year for the cityrsquos permanent collection Other places that offer creative workshops in the area are The Gypsy Trading Company in Brandon just follow their facebook page to get info and times on their fun workshops like hand lettering and chalk painting Also check out AR Workshop in Sioux Falls if crafts for your bedroom or house is more your style Hope to see you guys out and about this summer taking in all the great art opportunities this area has to offer

The Smarter Balanced assessments measure student achievement in relation to our state standards in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics In addition to providing overall scores in those two subjects score reports will provide information on student performance in the following areas

o Math concepts and procedures problem solving and modelingdata analysis and communicating reasoning

Your child will take the tests on a computer The assessments are unique in the way they adapt to be appropriate for your childrsquos level of learning As a result each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude towards testing These tests are not timed but we estimate that it will take a similar amount of time as did past assessments We estimate the English assessment will take 35 hours and the math assessment will take 25 hours
