Highlights of May Meeting

Mark Steele, President, welcomed members and guests on May 3, 2017. Warren Koepsel let the Pledge of Allegiance.

Election for club officers was held as follows: President - Mark Steele; Vice President – no candidate; Treasurer – Walt Blackmore; Sec-retary – Joan Schenamsgruber. All were elected by acclaim.

Our featured speaker, Julie Pasquinelli’s top-ic was ‘How to Protect Yourself from Mos-quitos and Other Vectors’.

Maricopa Cty Environmental Services Dept’s areas of responsibility include: food code; restaurant and food inspection; public and semi-public swimming pools; vector control; permitting and fee collection; permitting & fee collection; water, sewage and waste; out-reach & education.

Vectors are organisms that transmit disease. Mosquitoes, in particular, can spread West Nile virus, St. Louis Encephalitis, Zika virus, Dengue fever, chikungunya.

West Nile virus has been in Arizona since 2003. Its impact is unpredictable with 103 confirmed cases in 2015 and 78 in 2016.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

I pray everyone has been having a wonderful summer. Time has certainly flown by and our first Garrett Retirees club meeting of the 2017 – 2018 season will soon be here. We will again be meeting at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road in Scottsdale just North of McDowell, on the first Wednesday of each month. Social hour begins at 1:00PM and the speaker presentation begins at 2:00PM. Our first speaker is Bryan Seegars who will be giving a presentation titled: "Model Aircraft Jet Propulsion and Development of a Turbojet for Model Aircraft”. I think we all will find this very interesting. Don’t miss it! Although it may seem early, mark your calendar for our annual Christmas luncheon for De-cember 5, 2017 at the Desert Canyon Golf Club. We had a great time and turnout last year. Our club also sponsors a family for Christmas in conjunction with the luncheon. More de-tails will be coming.

The club needs your help, we are always looking for additional volunteers to help lead in many ways. First, if you know someone who recently retired or has been retired and not joined the club, invite them to a meeting or let me know and I will invite them! Second, we have an open officer position on the board, Vice-President. If you know someone you think would do well in this position let a board member know. Speaking of the board, your 2017 -

Zika virus has yet to be found in Arizona. It is linked to birth defects and can be spread by sexu-al contact, and is present in semen longer than in blood.

What can you do? Since mosquitoes need still water to breed – eliminate standing water – keep pools and water features in good working order – wear long sleeves and pants when outside – use repellant.

What does Vector Control do:

Provides year round surveillance using traps Executes complaint driven inspections Treats green pools (fish may be used) Conducts lab tests Conducts fogging where required between

midnight and 5 am Provides education to the public

Other pests involving Vector Control include bees, roof rats and flies.

Monthly Charity News

Your Board of Directors has voted to donate $100 each month to the Scholarship Fund and the other $100 to local charities as usual. Our April donation went to Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services (STARS). Thank You notes were received from Arizona Humane Society and STARS. Club guidelines dictate that we support local charities exclu-sively. A list of the charities from which the board chooses donations monthly is posted on the website. If you have a favorite charity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our attention.

The Sperry Club has purchased 48 additional tickets and allocated them to the people on the waiting list. That leaves 32 tickets available. Please note that the tickets in the past have all be allocated in days or weeks so procrastinators will miss out just like shopping in Costco. Tickets will be $15 per person and with reasonable warning I have been able to reallocate tickets for people unable to go.

Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of

McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for

December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45

pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm.

Giving Back, with Honeywell and RTVOS November 11, 2017

Calling all able bodied retirees!!! In line with our “giving back” culture, your Board has em-braced an opportunity to work with Honeywell Aerospace sup-porting Rebuilding Together, Valley of the Sun (RTVOS), a charitable organization based in Tempe. RTVOS and Aerospace are planning a working event this coming November. It will be a community housing/shelter event, performing tasks like

maintenance and clean-up for folks who are unable to do so for themselves. It's a great opportunity to support those in need in the valley, while spending quality time with other retirees and active employees. The specific tasks, as well as locations and dates, will be chosen by Honeywell and RTVOS. There will be a variety of work available to accommodate different skill levels. Tools and materials will be provided.

Please place a marker in your calendar to help this noble effort to give back.

We’ll be publishing more details as they develop. Our point of contact for this event is Doug Metzger. Doug is starting a list now for interested people to contact first when we have more de-tails. Your name on this list is NOT a commitment. We won’t ask for a commitment until we have more details about the activity, dates, and locations. Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station Tour

Jan 10th and Jan 31

st, 2018

This is a unique opportunity to get up close to a nuclear reactor. However, this tour requires a lot of walking across

a very large 4,000 acre campus so you must be physically fit. Palo Verde is located 45 miles West of Phoenix off

the I10 and is the largest nuclear power plant in the United States serving about four million people.

The Palo Verde Generating Station is located in the Arizona desert, and is the only large nuclear power plant in the

world that is not located near a large body of water. The power plant evaporates the water from the treated sewage

from several nearby cities and towns to provide the cooling of the steam that it produces.

Each tour is limited to 20 people and starts on site at 9am. It starts with an overview briefing before a walking

tour. Lunch will be provided followed by a question and answer session to finish between 1.30pm and 2.00pm.

Considering the remote location we might want to organize ride share. I will limit the tickets to 2 per member but

can add additional dates if demand is there. If you are unable to go check out the Energy Education Center Trip on

another page.

Palo Verde Energy Education Center

Buckeye, AZ

This tour is mainly for the members unable to go on the actual Palo Verde tour but still learn about the facility.

The main purpose for this facility is to serve as an emergency base of operations in the event of a crisis at the Palo

Verde Nuclear Generating Station. No date has been set. Normal days are Tuesday and Thursday and the limit is

100 people. If you are interested in going in February, 2018 email [email protected] and ask to be put on the

Preschoolers all over the United States were shown this picture and asked the same question. 92% of the preschooler's gave this answer: "The bus is traveling to the left." When asked, "Why do you think the bus is traveling to the left?" They answered: "Because you can't see the door to get on the bus."

How do you feel now??? Personally, I think the reason why we answer incorrect-ly is ...'WE FRIGGIN' WALKED TO SCHOOL!'
