Garryd Howells – Industrial Design Portfolio

Hitachi AT series saw Schoenemann design develop

the three following design briefs:

AT100 Metro: Creating a metro style mock up to be

displayed at Innotrans 2014.

AT200 Commuter: A project to create an inter-city style

mock up to be displayed at Innotrans 2014.

Cab Development: Taking the existing AT100-300

designs and giving them an update, introducing new

lights and body panels, with a new livery applied.

The AT100 was a modular design for short commutes, with a range of seating

options and live update travel information.

My primary responsibilities involved developing the range of seating including

the longitudinal, transverse and perches. The most challenging element was

creating a unique central perch in the vestibule that was stylish, functional and

easy to manufacture.

Modularity was the key focus of the project, designing a vehicle that could

easily be updated should a refurbishment be required. Using cantilevered

components presented a range of benefits including flexibility, cleaning and

reparability.

My key responsibilities for this project included, initially generating the overall

style and language of the vehicle before focusing on the draught screens and

seating provisions.

The AT100 and AT200 was unveiled in London on July 21st, then the AT200

was taken to Innotrans 2014.

ADL Enviro 400 (Euro 6)

My first project undertaken at Schoenemann Design. I

was the lead interior designer for the project working

alongside ADL’s in house engineering team.

A strong aesthetic had been set in a previous design

phase, so I worked on detailing key components. The

design addressed major key issues regarding tooling

costs, consistent manufacturing and assembly,

passenger comfort and driver requirements.

Walamai

A unique eco-friendly camping vehicle for Southern

Australia in 2025, allowing people to venture out and

explore the Nullarbor desert.

A purpose built vehicle with integrated camping

facilities including an inflatable tent, winch cable and

pheromone devices integrated into the rear wheels (to

ward off dangerous animals). All powered by a large

battery which can be charged by a kite.

Walamai was my final year project presented at the Coventry Degree show and

at London’s New Designers 2013. Months of sketching, Photoshop and

Illustrator set the theme for the design based around a horseshoe crab. The

final model was constructed in Alias then rendered in Showcase and an

animation pieced together in After Effects.

I wanted a design that had a unique look and was full of quirky products.

Realistically it’s a design that would be impossible to build but it was a project

where I tried to push my modelling skills in Alias and create a vehicle that I

myself would want and enjoy.

Abellio MKIII Refurbishment

Refurbishment of the existing MKIII vehicles for Abellio

Greater Anglia. The interior was photographed and

then modelled between myself and a colleague in

Rhino. My main responsibility was then ordering

samples and working with suppliers to create the

desired interior effect.

Although very little design was involved, the project

was useful to see how vehicles are put together and

understanding the materials and processes used in the

industry.

A personal project undertaken in the Autumn of 2014

for Volvo’s ‘truck of the future’ competition. They

specified that the design was to portray what one of

their vehicles may look like in the future whilst still

adhering to safety requirements.

To ensure that my design met current legislation I

based the model on the existing FH Globetrotter and

enhanced some of its details looking at super-formed

panels and the the ability to create 3D shapes in glass.

Schoenemann Tram Design

Purely a styling exercise to design a family friendly

looking tram that was purely a simple and clean. The

design was modelled in Rhino and rendered in Modo.

The main inspiration for the design

came from the animation film Wall-e.

The colour scheme was kept simple

with a bold accent colour giving it a

playful effect.
