Scorton Bikes & Barrows Festival is back for its 5th year this coming May bank holiday weekend. This quirky annual festival raises vital funds for village groups and community projects and is action packed with events to suit everyone - families, cyclists, runners, walkers and visitors wanting to enjoy a day out.

The main feature of the Festival is the decorated bicycles and wheelbarrows displayed throughout the village. Some are themed, some relate to current affairs and some are just plain wacky! We are being further spoiled this year by a series of classic cars and motorbike displays in and around the village. Over 50 cars will be visiting the village during the Festival.

The Festival weekend kicks off with a mass bike ride around the village of Scorton for all to view the fascinating exhibits in gardens, up trees and hidden behind hedges! Over the weekend, St Peter’s Church will be hosting a Art Exhibition and a Family Art Challenge. It will also host a stirring brass band concert which will sound fabulous within the old church walls.

Scorton Village Hall will be very busy over the weekend hosting many events including a Spring Fair of bric-a-brac, plants and gifts; a special Classic Afternoon Tea; a Lancashire Food & Gift Fair of jewellery, ceramics, homeware, local food and much more.

Scorton and cycling go hand in hand so there are cycle rides for any budding Bradley Wiggins; visitors are welcome to try a 32 miler to Condor Green and a family friendly ride of 10 miles around Barnacre, both organised by Garstang Cycling Club. Other athletic events include the popular Sherriff 10k and a Children’s Fun Run in the morning for any potential Seb Coe’s.

The village tradition, Scorton Rose Queen Festival will take place where local children

take part in a fancy dress parade through the village. The popular Scorton Music Festival returns to the playing field and features an afternoon of live bands, local ales, stalls, a hog roast and children’s entertainment.

On May Day we showcase other less traditional activities including a dog show, wacky wheelbarrow racing, an egg throwing competition and an afternoon of Sheep Racing - when was the last time you saw a herd of racing sheep?

The Final Grand Auction features a host of great lots and promises including a season’s fishing on the Lune, microlight flight, opera tickets, day with a vet, luxury hamper, guitar lessons and a full body massage. One lucky bidder will even walk away with a week’s holiday!

The evening is being run by a professional auctioneer and it will be a great evening out. The auction will be held at Scorton Village Hall and entry to the auction will be £1.00 with a licensed bar throughout.

The gifts and promises have been very kindly donated from various villagers and local businesses.

GARSTANG UNPLUGGEDsongwriting with the masterpieces of a tradition to give you something audacious and assured. You might hear a medieval madrigal followed by a soundscape of layers of Josienne’s flawless voice. You might hear Ben’s signature finger style guitar paired, laconic, meandering and tinged with jazz .This duo is driven by what feels true to the song, however bleak, however exposing and however technically difficult.New audiences from other walks of life aren’t quite prepared for the realisation that they just fell in love with a folk song. But audiences everywhere are falling for this duo because this is musicianship of the highest calibre. And while you never know what you will hear next, you can always count on that. It’s at Garstang Unplugged, The Kenlis Arms, Barnacre, Garstang PR3 1GD, on Thurs 23rd April. The music starts at 8.30pm. Tickets are £10 through our website, by reservation on (01995) 602795 or on the door. The Monthly singers night is on Wed 29th April from 8:00pm and all are welcome. The Kenlis Arms - Thurs 23rd AprilLast year we brought you the winners of the BBC folk award for best duo – but we’d booked them nine months before they won. The winners will be announced on 22nd April and quite by chance, Josienne and Ben are with us in Garstang the following day.Hailed as the ‘the green shoots growing from the very top of the English folk family tree’, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker have been winning awards since 2012. GALLOWAYS

The Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund

Spring-like weather on 5th March gave a lovely feeling to our Country Coffee Morning and it was wonderful to see friends, old and new, supporting our venture.

A busy and colourful range of stalls offering a vast array of goodies from upcycled vintage crafts by Hannah, handmade cards by Rosemary and Maxine to traditional fayre and tasty treats all helped to raise £557.37 towards our £7,000 target.

Many thanks to all who helped in so many different ways, your kindness and support is deeply appreciated.

On Sun 19th April an enthusiastic team of friends will be donning their walking boots to take part in our ‘CRY Canal Caper’ – a 19 mile trek along the Lancaster Canal from The Waterwitch, Lancaster to ‘Owd Nell’s, Bilsborrow, to help raise awareness of the work that CRY do and to raise funds for a local heart screening event for young people aged 14-35.

If you’re around bridges 99-44 on the lovely ‘Black & White’ canal on 19th April give us a wave or come and say hello and perhaps drop a few pennies in the pot.

We are setting off at 8:30am and hoping to keep a pace of about three miles an hour, probably with a few stops to admire the scenery, give the legs a break and enjoy the local hostelries. With any luck, we’ll arrive at Nell’s in time for tea!

For further information, or to sponsor the team, visit our page at www.virginmoneygiving.com/SomeoneSpecial/CRYCanalCaper or ring Paula on 07785 106976

BACK ON ONE’S FEETSpring is here although not everyone is feeling it. Ideally, we prefer to deal with illnesses naturally, without taking medications. Alternative methods further complement traditional therapies and are becoming increasingly popular.Mental health issues, such as stress, anxiety and depression unfortunately are on the increase. Pace of life has increased and people struggle to keep up with this hectic world. It is hard to balance work and family life. Stress can be motivating as well as overwhelming. It is perhaps a question of how we properly manage stress instead of having it build up, as this is a prime factor in the development of mental health issues. Stress is not only a personal problem but also can be caused by economic, work-related issues and technology (with information swirling around us at break-neck speed, requiring rapid responses). Our brains need some ‘down time’ built into our daily lives as the impact on our bodies and lives can be really traumatic.Reflexologists are aware of these issues and conditions. They respond positively to reflexology treatment – from pain conditions e.g. arthritis and migraines to digestive orders such as IBS and indigestion as well as hormonal complaints such as menopausal flushes to period pain. Further research is being carried out as reflexology extends beyond relaxation effects, improvements in diverse conditions and now more commonly combating the effects of stress and anxiety.Even those who have the tickliest of feet can enjoy reflexology. Clients love it!To learn more about reflexology and its benefits, have a talk delivered along with reflexology demonstrations to your community group. I would love to hear from you. TACKLING EBOLAA Garstang doctor who volunteered to help fight the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone is to give a talk and presentation in the town about his experiences at the front line of the world’s biggest health crisis.

Dr James Meiring, educated at St Thomas’s CE School and Garstang High, recently returned to the UK after a stint in West Africa, where more than 10,000 people have died of Ebola.

Garstang and Over Wyre residents were kept up to date with Dr James’s work in the town of Makeni, Sierra Leone, through articles in The Courier, Blackpool Gazette and Lancashire Evening Post. They were based on James’s blog www:sheffieldtosierra.org

The 30-year-old medic, who was brought up at Bowgreave, has agreed to speak about his

role in tackling Ebola at an information evening for anyone interested in learning about all aspects of the headline-hitting deadly virus and its impact. The meeting will hear directly from Dr James about the highs and lows of dealing daily with life and death

situations - often the latter.

His presentation will be one of the most unusual ever held in Garstang Arts Centre. It will not all be “heavy.” It will also feature stories of hope and happiness which Dr James discovered while working in Makeni, along with graphic photos from the town’s Ebola treatment centre as well as videos and contemporary African music.

The strictly ticket-only session will be held at Garstang Arts Centre on Sat April 18th at 7:30pm. Tickets are available from Market Place News, Market Place, Garstang, priced £5. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to an African-based children’s charity.

Over the last few months there has been a spate of thefts from sheds, garages and garden outbuildings, with bikes and power tools being stolen. Your garden/outdoor area can make your home more secure and should be your first line of defence against burglars. If your outdoor area can be easily accessed without attracting attention, then intruders will have more time to steal from you. Making your outdoor area more secure could prevent an intruder getting into your home, garage or shed. Do not leave ladders, tools or gardening equipment lying around - they could be used to break into your house. GARSTANG GARDENING CLUB

The next meeting will be on Mon 13th April at the Crofters Hotel and Restaurant, A6, Cabus at 7:30pm. Our last speaker of this session will be Gwyfor Williams and his rather amusingly titled talk is ‘Mower Mania ‘ Don’t be frightened by the title, Gwyn will deliver this important topic in an easily digestable form. The March meeting of the club was, as usual, very well attended, which would not be expected as it was also the A.G.M., a meeting that in most clubs usually gets the lowest attendance of the year. The subtlety at Garstang is to combine this with the Annual Spring Bulb Show and although the prizes are not pecuniary there is always that element of pride when your name comes up on the awards and the resultant winning entry can be shown off at home or a photograph publicly displayed.

Members can see the full results on the Gardening Club website for those that have computers and also in The Garstang Courier. The A.G.M. was ably managed by the club Chairman, Ray Pearson with our retiring secretary, Sue Mc.Dade and Treasurer Jennifer Westcott cautiously presenting her first report after election last year. The chairman thanked everybody for their stalwart work this last year before dealing with the unenviable task of proposing the new committee in. Specific thanks were given to Sue Mcdade who has served on the committee for several years and more specifically for her period as Club Secretary, the only position that was not filled and is awaiting a hoped for volunteer soon. We were pleased to welcome two new members to the committee who we know will bring fresh ideas for future programmes and events. Summer OutingsThese are always announced at the A.G.M. and members organising the separate trips are now receiving bookings and will also be taking them at the next meeting. WINDSOR SURGERY NEWSEaster weekPlease be aware that we will have fewer bookable appointments with your doctor over the two week Easter holiday period. Additional appointments will be provided by our regular locum doctors. If you prefer to wait and see your usual doctor, please ring back after the Easter holiday to book a routine appointment.

The two bank holidays do mean that extra pressure is placed on A&E departments and the out of hours services. In order to try to alleviate this as much as possible, we will be providing Open Access i.e. book on the day appointments with the doctors on the morning of Tuesday 7th April in the same way that we already do so on a Monday. Please help us to help you by avoiding requesting appointments for routine non-urgent medical problems over this period. Thank you for your co-operation.Patient Reference GroupAre you aged 18-30 and would like to have a say about the services provided here at Windsor Surgery? Our patient views are very important to us. In 2013 we set up a Patient Reference Group (PRG) as a method of obtaining patient feedback.

Life at Saint Aidan’s is always busy but our students still find time to think of others. We often hear negative reports about young people today so it is terrific to be able to report on the caring attitude displayed by many of our students in their desire to help others.

Charity Students from each form in Keller House had a bake-off staying after school one night for two hours baking cakes.

The brief outlined that they needed to have a tray bake and a batch of muffins. The students were judged on several aspects of their bake from the presentation to taste to how tidy they kept their work area throughout the bake off.

Despite receiving scores for a variety of elements, there were several teams on the same overall mark. Therefore Mr Coe, Head of Keller House, had to call it a draw

ST AIDAN’S NEWSstating that the “only winner was Comic Relief!”

Hillary House has also been highly c o m p e t i t i v e . Each form has been collecting money for their House charity, Cancer Research.

Form Tutors will nominate their most generous student who will then have the opportunity to win a new tablet. The form that raises the most money will also receive a prize so Form Tutors are becoming even more competitive than their form members! The winners will be announced after Easter.

Personal Development DaysRecently all our students were involved in various activities to develop their personal skills. Year 7 looked at Diverse Communities whilst Year 8 went to Borwick Hall for a day of activities to enhance their independent thinking and leadership skills. Year 9 explored Self Awareness with Year 10 being involved in workshops to prepare them for their work experience in July.

As GCSE exam season is approaching Year 11 had Study Skills workshops to help them plan for the next three months at school.

STEM Final

Four Year 9/10 students took part in the final with a chance of winning £10,000.

They had to improve on their original design from the heats by developing a self-propelling cable car that would travel further than the 9.85 meters they’d previously managed.

ST AIDAN’S NEWS (cont) AGE UK CHARITY SUPPER EVENING

Once again the students only had the same equipment as previously. This included: cardboard, string, weights, blu-tack, dowel, tape, coat hangers and a couple of bolts.

Mr Ireland, Director of Technology and Computing, said the students enjoyed the experience thoroughly and although they did not win they improved on last year as they had not even reached the finals in 2014.

German ExchangeStudents from our partner school in Ingolstadt spent a week with us during which they visited Chester and Lancaster Castle. They also joined in lessons and became fully involved in the life of the school.

Our students will be going over to Germany in July which offers them the opportunity to improve their language skills as well as experiencing a different European culture.

Learning Latin

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have begun an introduction to the Latin language at the end of which they will receive certificates from Cambridge University. This is an after school class and yet another language the school offers as Mandarin is taught on another night.

If you would like to visit us at any time to see what goes on at Saint Aidan’s or have any questions, do contact me at school.

We used to have a client who was a leading haematologist. What she didn’t know about the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases of the blood could be written on a seed packet. Indeed, she was honoured for her work by the Queen and was widely respected within the medical community. Despite her abilities however, she managed to kill every plant unfortunate enough to be gifted to her or bought by her. One could imagine plants ducking for cover as she enthusiastically embarked on yet another buying trip to the garden centre. “I can’t understand it,” she’d say to us, “it was alright when I bought it.”We tried to use a clinical analogy in an attempt to save the lives of some herbs. “Imagine they’re dehydrated and they need a saline drip,” but to no avail. We’d arrive the following week to find them gasping for water.

Under watering and over watering are common mistakes in the care of our green friends and at this time of year when we all enjoy re-stocking the garden, it’s really important to check out plant labels. Every plant has its own unique needs. We’re often asked into the gardens of homeowners who’ll point out plants that refuse to thrive. In most cases there’s a simple explanation. Shade-loving plants have been placed in full sun, and vice versa. Drought resistant plants have been placed in boggy ground and like all of us, plants do need nutrition so don’t forget to apply fertilizers or manure. Check when you’re digging in new plants that they have enough access to light and water and prune back shrubs that may be bullying other smaller plants.Even though it may rain this is no guarantee of your new plants receiving enough to drink. Quite often the moisture won’t reach new roots and free draining soils will soon dry out. Please remember to give your new plants a good soak when you dig them in and repeat regularly. A good mulch of manure, compost or bark chippings will help to retain moisture.Anyway, hark at me. I’m not bad at keeping plants alive but I’m having less success at keeping the baby watered. She’s decided at eight months old that she has no time for milk anymore. She’s enjoying mushed up fish pie and chicken roast dinners too much to be bothered with the white stuff. I’m having to find ever more inventive ways of sneaking it into her diet. Sadly, unlike plants, babies don’t come with labels pointing out their unique needs!Happy Gardening!Alison Tarpey-Black Artnoire 07738 515 846 / (01253) 810039

‘The Winders of Wyresdale’Wed 8th April: 7:30pmGarstang URC Church HallMusician and music historian, Andy Hornby will lead the talk and musical presentation. The Winder family from Dolphinholme and Wyresdale formed the

mainstay of a village band from the late 1700s to the First World War. Many of their original musical scores have been collected by Mr Hornby in recent years, some of them from members of the Winder family who still live in the Garstang/Wyresdale area.Mr Hornby said: “Whilst in Scotland and

Ireland, the tradition of music for village dances is largely unbroken. In England it virtually died out with the Industrial revolution and the Great War but fortunately these tune-books that were hand-copied by members of the Winder family have come down to us and show the repertoire of country dance and song tunes from the early 1800s.”A similar presentation on The Winders of Wyresdale was held in Garstang during the town’s 2013 Arts and Music festival. It attracted a capacity audience and the same is expected for the session in April. For more information about the Historical Society, contact chairman, Peter Burrell on (01995) 601054 (after 6pm) or visit www.garstanghistoricalsociety.org.ukMore information about The Winders of Wyresdale can be found at www.andyhornby.net

GARSTANG SHOWGarstang Show celebrates 200 years on August 1st 2015. The organisers are looking for artefacts and memorabilia to be part of an exhibition on the Show Field to celebrate the contributions local farmers have made to the development of agriculture in our area.Garstang Agricultural Society was formed in 1809 with the aim of being “useful and beneficial to the neighbourhood” and held its first exhibition in 1813. It has always been at the forefront of agricultural initiatives. When Mr George Singleton of Kirkland Hall was sorting out his papers for a move to Blackpool in 1905, he found there a list of “Premiums offered by the Farming Society held at Garstang for the year 1816,” and contacted the Preston Guardian about his find. The prize for the best longhorn bull caused the reporter writing up the story to claim that Lancashire Longhorns in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries “were the

prevailing stock in almost every part of the country” and though the beasts were originally from Craven, they were bred mostly in the Fylde and had long attracted buyers from all over the country. The writer next refers to Mr Wilby of Linton in Leicestershire being the first to attempt to improve longhorns in 1720, followed by Mr Webster of Canty near Coventry, and he then sold two heifers to Mr Bakewell of Dishley, Leicestershire. These, plus a Westmorland long-horned bull were “the foundation of Mr Bakewell’s famous herd.” Therefore, some of Mr Bakewell’s stock improvements, foundation of the so-called ‘Agricultural Revolution,’ were based on animals from the Fylde.Garstang farmers can claim credit for other initiatives: members of the Garstang Milksellers’ Association met at the Green Man Inn, Myerscough in November 1898 to discuss extending the Association and making it rather more active. The regular attenders were James Pearson of St Michael’s Hall, Thomas Smith of Sandham Mill, Joseph Whittaker of Matshead Farm, Claughton, Thomas Brewer of Barnacre, Thomas Banks of Bilsborrow, and Thomas Ibison and Richard Ibison of Fogg Farm. They decided to call themselves the Garstang and District Dairy Farmers’ Association. “The object of the association was to protect the interests of the members generally.” Humble beginnings, but out of these meetings grew the Lancashire Farmers’ Association, which amalgamated with the NFU to become that body’s Lancashire Branch in 1921, and the Preston and District Farmers’ Trading Society (Preston Farmers), which served local farmers for most of the twentieth century. So the 200 or so years since the formation of a Garstang Agricultural Society have seen a lot to celebrate, and it is hoped to mount an exhibition worthy of those achievements.

April Art ExhibitionThe Arts Centre is delighted to welcome artist Ken Roberts whose work will be exhibited from the 7th to 30th April.

Ken was born in Preston and, as a talented schoolboy, painted murals. Despite his parents’ ambition for him to become an art teacher, Ken wanted to play football and cricket for England. None of these things happened, and, after a business career in senior management, Ken is now retired and paints full time.

Covering a wide range of subjects, Ken likes to capture and record the atmosphere and feeling of any given scene. Most of his paintings are of places visited or around the Fylde Coast.

GARSTANG FAIRTRADE NEWSThank you to everyone who supported Fairtrade Fortnight between 23rd February and 8th March. Campaigners across Garstang joined with the rest of the country to share stories from the people who grow our favourite products and remind everyone of the dramatic difference Fairtrade makes and why it is still needed. Fairtrade ensures farmers across the developing world receive a fairer price for their work, as well as an additional Fairtrade Premium. This is used by farmers and workers to invest in their communities who then decide what the Premium is spent on, whether that’s building a new school or hospital, or investing in better environmental business practices.During Fairtrade Fortnight, the Fairtrade stall saw Garstang cyclists fuelling up with Fairtrade bananas before their Saturday

cycle ride, in what promises to become a Fairtrade Fortnight tradition.

Photo exhibitions were held in the Library, Crofters Hotel, the Co-op, Sainsbury’s and Booths showing Fairtrade producers at work around the world. The competition to design a Fairtrade mug was won by children from St Thomas’, Garstang; Winmarleigh Primary; John Cross, Bilsborrow; and Claughton St Mary’s. the Mayor, Cllr Graham Salisbury, at the Fairtrade stall outside the market hall on Sat 28th Feb. Thanks to Printmob of Bridge Street, Garstang, who are printing the mugs. Fairtrade certificates were also presented to two Churchwardens and the Deputy Churchwarden of Barnacre All Saints at a special Evensong and at Garstang Methodist Church. Their Fairtrade Service was held followed by tea and coffee - all Fairtrade, of course! The Mustard Seed stocks many Fairtrade goodies, but please remember to ask for Fairtrade products in all our Garstang shops. Buying Fairtrade is the easiest way to show your support and give producers the chance to work their way out of poverty.Lancashire is now a Fairtrade County!

Adam Gardner, Fairtrade Foundation’s Communities Campaigns Manager, awarded Lancashire County with Fairtrade status on Fri 27th Feb. He said: ‘The UK has one of the most powerful networks of Fairtrade campaigners in the world, raising awareness about Fairtrade values in their communities and driving positive change for smallholder farmers and their families in developing countries. It is thanks to the support of groups like Garstang that currently more than 1.4 million farmers and workers around the world benefit from the Fairtrade system.’Fairtrade supporters from across Lancashire joined members of Lancashire County Council and guests to declare Lancashire a Fairtrade County. Local schoolchildren performed a sketch to explain how Fairtrade bananas can help farmers and their communities change for the better and we were interviewed by Radio Lancashire and asked to comment.Mary Cammack

On a wet March evening, members met at the Village Hall, all hoping the lion in early March would go out as a lamb! Many thanks go again to Dawn’s husband John Gerrard who has produced the 2015 Members Programme, the picture reminding villagers of the devastating floods of 1980. Heather Hamblin was welcomed and proceeded to take members on a wonderful trip to Rwanda and Uganda. Heather and her family have supported the people of Rwanda for several years through a link with Preston Methodist Church. Heather and David are commendable for their dedication to help this poor country and people over the years and are really unsung heroes who make a difference. CATTERALL GARDENING CLUBOur first gardening club meeting was held at Catterall Village Hall on 17 March at 7:00pm and we were delighted by the friendly, enthusiastic and generous support of the people who attended. The inaugural speaker was Sue Redmayne from W. Robinson’s at Forton, better known as the Home of the Mammoth Onion! After an interesting talk, Sue and husband Peter answered questions regarding best varieties of vegetables for growing right now, which compost to use and even advice on which way up to plant big seeds, which is side ways of course! It was a happy and at the same time very informative meeting. Thank you to everyone who attended and we look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on Tues 21st April, 7:00 to 9:00pm when Andrew Thompson from The Barn, Scorton will be planting up pots for Summer.Netta Parker

Big Bra HuntWhat a fabulous response!A big “Thank You” to all who donated. At our meeting the following Wednesday, we counted all the bra’s we had collected whilst enjoying

a delicious Comic Relief Red Nose bun made by one of our members, Leslie. The final count to date was 500! AND they are still coming! The picture shows our jubilation at such a Wonderful Bra result! There can’t be a spare bra left in Garstang! Well done ladies. Your Bra’s will soon be on their way to Senegal providing a positive life-changing employment opportunity for many women.

Bric-a-Brac Stall On a cold March Saturday, with your help, we managed to raise £131.00 for charity on our ‘bra collection’ stall.Back Packs UpdateForton schoolchildren, involved in the Backpack Project from the start, have been busy helping us fill TEN more backpacks with clothes, flip flops, hygiene items, stationery and school equipment. The children realised how hard it would be to go to school without such basic equipment and were pleased to know that they’ve helped another 10 children to fulfill their dream of having an education. They fully understand what a difference they are making to the lives of children less fortunate than themselves. Recently, Comic Relief highlighted the desperate need that children in Africa have for education – with your help, we are giving that chance of a better life to some of these children. We now have a small store of some items but need - rulers, spoons, small towels, and of course your unwanted backpacks. Thank you.Soroptimists all over this country, and many others, work hard to improve the lives of those less fortunate than us. April sees Garstang Camera Club hosting two outside speakers: on Wed 1st April, Peter Hornblower gives us ‘A Taste of France’ and on Wed 15th April Martyn Mackie is showing us there is more to a portrait than a quick selfie on a mobile phone. But April also has us looking forward and back; forward to the summer holidays and yet-to-be-taken photos in our summer competition, details of which are yet to be announced, and backwards to our Annual Competition in March, when Judge Ken Ainscow gave us his view of our pictures. Our congratulations therefore to Mike Tempan, whose picture ‘Out Of The Arctic Sunset’ was selected the best digital picture, Rhona Giles for her colour print of a ‘Frog Mouthed Owl’ and Stan Pearson for his monochrome print of a ‘Leyland Tiger’. No prizes for guessing which one is pictured here.

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLEAt the meeting on the 16th March, we welcomed our friend Bruno Rafala to the Circle for his regular yearly presentation of a selection of Italian Wine.

Bruno has been a good friend to the circle, not only for his regular tastings, but also for arranging some excellent holidays for members of the circle in his native Sicily.

The wines for this presentation were from Calabria, Campania and Puglia, and comprised two whites, a rosé and four reds.

The names of indigenous Italian grapes such as Greco, Gaglioppo and Negromano are not as well known as varieties such as Chardonnay, Shiraz or Merlot.

Bruno’s presentation however, demonstrated that good and interesting wines can be produced from these lesser known grapes. Members of the Circle might therefore be tempted to look out for these varieties in future as an alternative to the mass produced wines made from the more common varieties on the shelves of supermarkets and wine stores.

Refreshments were provided by Ann Harrison and Mary Fitzgibbons, the vote of thanks from the circle was given by Frank Holland.

The next meeting of the Circle will be on Mon 20th April at 7:30pm in the Arts Centre. The speakers will be Guy Pugh and Richard Harrison and they will be engaging in a ‘Wine Battle’ to defend their choices of wine. Details from Don Goodier on (01995) 603720.Mervyn Stokes
