GARSTANG CHILDREN’S FESTIVALLast month’s speaker, Phil Dunnet from Ribblesdale Nurseries at Woodplumpton, brought along a small forest of plants, trees, shrubs and herbaceous to illustrate his talk on the advent of Winter. He demonstrated what a colouful range of plants are still showing their best at this time of year.

What a splendid way of showing just what you can achieve in the garden as winter takes over. Quite a few of our members went home with more than they brought with them and a bitofdiggingforthenextfewdays!

For November we are in for a special treat when Brian Gomm comes down from Kendal to give a presentation on the Alpine Flowers of a very special place - the Swiss Engadine Valley.

For those who have been in the Alps or any other similar mountainous area in the Spring, they will know what to expect. For everyone else, it will be a very special experience.

The meeting is held as usual at the same venue: The Crofters Hotel on the A6 at Garstang.

Meetings start at 7:30pm but it is always worth arriving early, both for a good seat but also to take time to purchase raffle tickets and thismonth also to buy seats for the forthcoming Annual Dinner which is on Mon 11th January 2016. Hilary Hine will take your money and give you a copy of the choice of menus to complete.

There are still a few bulbs left for members who did not collect the annual three daffs for the Spring Bulb competitions. Bob Sutcliffe has these.

Keep sweeping up the leaves but don’t burn them - compost them!Theymake excellentleaf mould after about 12 months.

GARSTANG GARDENING CLUBThe Garstang and District Children’s Festival Committee has lost one of its most valuable members recently. David Gardner died on the 12th October after a short illness.

David was involved with the Festival for most of his life and had been Secretary for 20 years. Within his role, he was the main organiser of the event and one of the reasons that the Festival is still such a success.

David did most of his work behind the scenes and was not one to look for praise or attention. His involvement with numerous other clubs and associations around the area was testament to his love of Garstang and its people. As a hardworking, reliable, and humorous friend and associate he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Garstang and District Children’s Festival Committee

MOVEMENT FOR HEALTHAs an osteopath I spend much of my working day observing the human body, how it moves and listening with my hands for signs of a problem.I then spend my time using my hands to correct these problems which are often quite subtle but can lead to pain and suffering.I use the phrase ‘movement is life’ a lot in my work, whether that is when I nag a patient to change their lifestyle or simply to remind myselfofwhatIamdoing!‘Movement is life’ may seem rather simplistic but it is profoundly important to the human body and our health. Even at the cellular level there is movement going on in our body all the time. Chemicals, nutrients and minerals are constantly being exchanged between cells to maintain our ability to function. At a different level our heart is contracting to

pumpfluidsthroughoutourbody, encouragingboththebloodtoflowandthelymphtomovewhich maintains our immune system. Of course, as we move our muscles contract and expand pumping blood and nutrients in and waste products out. Wearemainlymadeupofwaterandfluidsand movement encourages all this fluidto move properly. This myriad of pumping movements and exchanges is happening billions of times over and over everyday... Whatanastoundingthingourbodyis! If we take a step back in time to our evolution one can see how critical movement was for survival. Without an ability to move and function effectively we would not be able to hunt or gather our food. We would not be able to build our shelters or clothe ourselves and if there was a threat we would have to attack or retreat to survive… movement was indeed life.Of course times have moved on but our body is still the same as that of humans from thousands of years ago and a very modern problem is that we have created a society where we do not need to move. We can sit and press buttons to get all that we need. If we wish to go anywhere we have machines to take us where we wish to go. Our body is no longer moving as it should because it does not have to. Yet our body demands movement for optimum health. Our joints are given nutrients when we move (you can get arthritis from lack of use as opposed to from wear and tear) and our muscles and tissues strengthen when we demand movement from our body. Conversely, when we stay still we quite simply waste away. Did you know that one week of bed rest causes half of your muscle bulk to disappear. We know that exercising your body to increase your heart rate for at least 30 minutes

OUT RAWCLIFFE VILLAGE HALLfive times a week dramatically reduces thechance of you getting heart disease, cancer and a myriad of other illnesses. This is not because of some magical hocus pocus….it is BECAUSE YOUARE BUILT TO MOVE!I liken moving your body to the image of a babbling brook - whilst sitting still, staring at the television is the equivalent of a stagnant pond.So which do you wish to be? A babbling brook or a stagnant pond? This is your choice. Even if you have health problems and injuries you can move your body and your body will start to enjoy this and bring you rewards. An ancient Greek philosopher whose name escapes me once said, “If you are not prepared to make time for your health, be prepared to make time for your illness.” Now is decision time…Nick Tofalos

On Wed 4th Nov Garstang Camera Club will host speaker Gary Waidson, DPAGB; HND, who will give a presentation on ‘D Ymir’s Bones’. Apparently in Norse mythology, Ymir was a primordial giant and the creator of a race of frost giants, so this may have something to do with his journeys to the frozen north, or thenagain, itmaynot! Then on Wed 11th Nov club member Peter Knight will give a workshop on ‘Layers’, which enables software workers to alter just part of a picture or to insert missing relatives in family portraits. Bring laptops, those who have them. A day later, on Thurs 12th Nov all those available will be at Lytham St Annes for a Fylde Five-Way Digital Image Battle with four other local camera clubs. One of these days we may come better than last time.

GARSTANG CAMERA CLUBBack on Wednesdays again, on Wed 18th Nov Maxwell Law will give a presentation on ‘Wildlife’. ‘Ghost Writer’ by David TristramThurs 19th - Sat 21st Nov Cabus Village Hall - 7:30pm

At a last-night party for a production of Hamlet, talented actress Ruby Pinfold is found dead from a lethal cocktail of drink and drugs. One year later, her ghost appears to her playwright husband Edward - claiming that she was, in fact, poisoned and urges him tofindherkiller.Ruby helps Edward to write a play based on the night of her murder, and he invites the key suspects to read through the play with him, hoping that one of them will give themselves away. Needless to say, they each have their own motive and opportunity to have committed the crime. The play is a comedy thriller and some of the humour has an adult theme which makes it unsuitable for the under 13s.In Cabus Village Hall on the A6, one mile north of Garstang at 7:30pm.Tickets are £6 including a programme and refreshments. They can be obtained from Billingtons Electrical, Croston Road Stores or by calling R.Knowles on (01995) 605608Barbara Blake

The circle welcomed Stuart Rothwell from ‘The Vineyard’ at Ramsbottom for the tasting on Mon 19th Oct.

The evening took the form of a blind tasting, with members asked to use their tastebuds and knowledge to either guess the country of origin or grape variety used in the eight wines that were presented.

This competitive side of the evening was not taken too seriously as members tasted their way through the excellent selection of wines that Stuart brought for us to enjoy.

The three whites and five reds came fromacross the globe with both new and old worlds represented in the selection.

Stuart’s comments about the wines presented added to the enjoyment of the evening, which was both informative and fun for anyone who enjoys their wine.

The vote of thanks was given by Alan Jeffries, and the refreshments were provided by Kath and Brian Heaton.

The season is still young, and we would encourage anyone who enjoys a good glass of wine to come along to our meetings.

We are a friendly group who enjoy our wine, but don’t take the subject too seriously. You certainly would find it hard to get bettervalue for a wine tasting evening than those presented by our circle.

Details of membership can be obtained by telephoning Don Goodier on (01995) 603720.

The next meeting of the circle will be at the Arts Centre on Mon 16th Nov at 7:30pm. The presenters are Emma Bailie and Alex Buxton from Garstang’s independent wine shop ‘Aged in Oak’.

The story of one of the last major battles on English soil is to be told to members and supporters of Garstang Historical Society at their November meeting.

Preston historian Dr Bill Shannon is to

give a lecture on the 1715 Battle of Preston, which witnessed troops loyal to King George defeat an invading army of Jacobites (mainly Scottish followers of the “Old Pretender” James Stuart of the ousted Stuart dynasty).

Dr Shannon’s talk will include details of the Jacobites’ march from Scotland to Preston - via Lancaster and Garstang - as well as focusingontheshort-livedfightinginPrestoncentre which resulted in the defeat of the invading army.

The talk, at Garstang United Reformed Church Hall is on Wed 11th Nov at 7:30pm. The date is relevant, being exactly 300 years to the week that the battle took place.

Entry is free to Garstang Historical Society members. The cost for non-members is £2 (including refreshments). All welcome. It is advised to arrive at the hall early as due to large numbers attending recent meetings have been standing room only.

ACTION GARSTANGOur first public meeting on Mon 12th Octat the Garstang Community Academy was attended by over 250 people. We have now formed an official group, ‘Action Garstang’,to campaign to stop the Community Centre development until the community have been properly consulted as to their views on the proposals.

We have already raised over £700 for our fightingfundandwewillbepublishingdetailsregularly as to our income and expenditure so that people can see what we are doing with their donations and know that they are being put to good use.

We held two events to publicise the Action Garstang campaign. We asked that as many people as possible would come to the riverside at the bottom of the Community Centre Car Park on Sat 24th Oct. Everyone was to wear something red if they could.

The second event on Sat 31st Oct was at the same location on the Car Park for which we urgentlyneedlotsofzombies!

We’ll let you know how these events went in the December issue of Focus.

Updates on our campaign, including lots of campaign photos, can be found on the Garstang Under Threat website on the Action Garstang page.

Autumn is now upon us and what little warm weather we did get this year is being faded out by cold, crisp mornings. This makes catching the train down to London first thingonaMonday

morningevenharder!

The Parliamentary recess which accompanies the Conference season always gives me the opportunity to get out and about in the constituency, which is always something I enjoy. I have also carried out surgeries recently where I have face-to-face meetings with constituents who have sought my help in relation to a number of issues.

Last week, I attended one of Wyre Councils regular management meetings. These meetings are a great opportunity for the Wyre MPs to be updated on local issues and for Wyre Council’s Cabinet Members and Senior OfficerstohighlightconcernsdirectlytoMPs.

Maintaining a good working relationship with the local authority means that I can try and get the best outcomes for my constituents. It also enables me to feed back to Ministers how the Government’s policies are working on the ground.

A number of constituents have contacted me in relation to the sale and the proposed development of the Garstang Community Centre. Please be assured that I will continue to doall I can to reflect the viewsof constituents in my representations to Wyre Council. I also intend to meet the developer.

With regard to Halite, I am currently awaiting a response from the European Commission regarding the environmental issues which I highlighted. I will let you know as soon as I receive a response to my calls for the Commission to intervene in the case.

Nationally this week’s latest employment figures show that a further 140,000 arein employment since July. Employment continues to grow and it has now reached a record high at 73.6%, with 80% of these people in full time work.

In Wyre and Preston North, unemployment claimants are well below the national average. I am pleased to say our area has one of the highest rates of employment in the country.

COMPUTER SAFETYLast month we covered scam phone calls (again) and I promised further details on dodgy emails or screen messages.

There are a number of different ways fraudsters will try to con you using emails.

Some, known as ‘phishing’, pretend to come from banks, credit card companies, online shops and auction sites and other trusted organisations.

They usually try to trick you into going to the site, for example to update your password to avoid your account being suspended. The embedded link in the email itself goes to a website that may look like the real thing but is actually a fake designed to trick victims into entering personal information.

Sometimes the email will be the result of a company having been hacked – for example, the bad guys might write to you and refer to a recent order which you really have made, saying that you just need to reconfirmyourpayment details. There will then be a link taking you to a page asking for credit card and other valuable personal information.

Fake emails often (but not always):

• have a different email address from the trusted organisation’s normal website address

• use a non-specific greeting such as“Dear customer” instead of your proper name

• threaten that unless you act immediately your account may be closed

• give a website link which seems very similar to the proper address - but even a single character difference means a different website

• request personal information such as username, password, date of birth or bank details

Other email tricks involve trying to sell you things, hoax charity appeals, chain messages

COMPUTER SAFETY (cont) ST. MICHAEL’S LADIES SOCIAL CLUBor simply ‘here are those pictures’.

Don’t: • open or forward emails which you

suspect are spam• open attachments from unknown

sources• respond to emails from unknown sources • make purchases or charity donations in

response to spam email• click on ‘remove’ or reply to unwanted

email • click on links in emails from unknown

sources.

Instead move your mouse pointer over the link to reveal its true destination, usually displayed in a popup bubble or in the bottom left corner of your screen. If this is different from what is displayed in the text of the link then there may be a problem.

Think twice – before you click on any links in an email or before you open any attachments. Even if you know the sender, make sure it is something you are expecting as they could have been hit by a virus or other problem which then sends out these dodgy messages.

If in doubt, contact them to check it is a valid email or ask someone else for a second opinion. Please don’t be frightened to ask - it’s always far, far better to be safe than sorry.

Screen popups – if you get a message on your screen saying that problems have been found and asking you to ring a number to get themfixed:DON’T! It’s just a different version of the scam IT/Microsoft support call.

Next month - passwords.

Don’t forget - if you have any questions or concerns about security, then please do give me a ring for a quick chat.

Each of the clubs hold one of these evenings in their year which means that we get the chance to form new friendships and enjoy existing ones.

national average.Since May I have been made aware of the importance of good, reliable broadband by local people in both the rural and urban parts of my constituency. It’s important because in a growing digital economy, it is access to good and reliable broadband which can ‘make or break’ a new business start-up. It’s also important for families as more and more schools are setting homework to be submitted online. And in an age of Netflix,iPlayer and Skype many people are feeling cut off by a lack of reliable broadband. It would be remiss of me to not mention the farming community. This month I have met with local members of the National Farmers Union who shared with me many frustrations including broadband. The new Basic Payment Scheme, which was intended to be fully digitally administered and processed online, has caused great frustration and expense to farmers without broadband provision. And when HMRC expect tax returns and PAYE to be completed online, farmers and rural communities are being excluded from this service. With government services increasingly being offered exclusively online the government needs to address this disenfranchisement of communities. According to research by the Countryside Alliance, rolling out high speed broadband across the whole of the UK is the technological improvement that the British public most widely believe will impact positively on the UK economy. Yet 56% of rural people feel the Government is not doing enough to ensure it happens.I doubt anyone hasn’t heard of the group of my local people, fed up with the poor service, who set up their own company – Broadband for the Rural North. B4RN are digging their own trenches and laying their own cables . They’ve achieved eye-watering speeds of up to 1000 Mb/s. No doubt some of the fastest

Campaigning for Better Broadband in WyreOne of the things that is raised with me, in every part of the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency,

but particularly in rural areas and Over Wyre, is the frustrations many people have with unreliable or non-existent broadband access. The importance of broadband to households and businesses cannot be overestimated. In this day and age many deem it as essential as water, gas or electricity. Where broadband access is poor it holds back our communities economically and socially. Many of you may not know that 4% of Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency experiences slow connections of less than 2 Mb/s, which is a percentage above the

internet speeds – not just in rural Britain, but also far faster than any urban service I’ve seentoo!Reliable broadband access is essential for competitive and successful enterprises in a growing digital economy. When 12% of GDPisgeneratedonlinewearesignificantlyahead of other countries, but it is vital that the UK has access to effective and affordable broadband if we are to maintain this lead. In Westminster I am working with cross-party groups of MPs campaigning for more action to ensure the whole country is online. I have spoken a couple of times in debates with the Minister responsible and will continue to fightforthisimportantinfrastructure.Ifyou’vehad any experiences with BT Openreach or another provider that you want to share with me I would be interested to hear from you.Police Cuts in LancashireI have had issues of anti-social behaviour and crime raised with me as I’ve been out and about Over Wyre and so I was very concerned when I have received news from Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, that policing in Lancashire faces an additional cut of 13.5% in its grant. If these cuts are implemented we could see the Lancashire force reduced from 3,611 officers in 2010 to 1,699 by 2020.Thiswillwipe out Lancashire Police’s specialist and neighbourhood teams and mean their vital work protecting children from sexual exploitation, tackling crime and anti-social behaviour and even tackling major crime will be at risk. I’m shocked by the scale of these government cuts - the service would be unrecognisable compared to the service provided today. I have written to the Policing Minister and secured a meeting with him to discuss this and I will be asking for a reconsideration and working with our Police and Crime Commissioner opposing these dangerous

Paul Smith

The local historian leading Garstang’s Great War Heroes project is planning his latest lecture linked to the centenary commemorations of the First World War.On August 4th 2014 - 100 years to the day Britain declared war on Germany - Paul Smith gave a lecture to a packed audience at Garstang Arts Centre. The talk was on the build-up to the war and the involvement of Garstangservicemenintheconflict. On Sat Nov 7th at 7:00pm, the evening before Remembrance Sunday, Mr Smith will deliver his latest lecture. This time the topic will be “Women and the War: The Female World of 1914-1918.”The meeting, at Garstang Arts Centre, will be in two parts, separated by a refreshment break.Thefirstpartwillbedevotedtowomenand war work (at home and abroad), while the second part will be on women’s attitudes, sartorial history and emancipation. It is a strictly ticket only event. Tickets (£5 including refreshments) are available from Market Place News, Garstang. It is anticipated the lecture session will include the public launch of the new book, ‘Garstang’s Great War Heroes’. The 90-page book is about the life, times and sad deaths of the 19 men whose names appear on the Great War plaque of Garstang War Memorial. The illustrated book also focuses on several Garstang servicemen who returned from war service, their lives never to be the same again. Anthony Coppin

“Farming with a wife is hard, farming without one is almost impossible”.

Henry BrewisThe daily life of a farmer’s wife or lady farmer is varied and never dull. Even the title is a source of ‘discussion’. According to my husband you can only be born a farmer not becomeone!Farmers are a race apart, their lives revolve around: meal times, the weather, the animals, machinery and did I mention meal times? I love my life, family and the farm, I wouldn’t changeathing.Wellmaybeafewthings!Breakfast is a full English after four hours of milking or tractor work. This is a chance to discuss jobs for the day or whatever is the most urgent crisis. Help with the house work might involve putting the breakfast dishes in the general area of the sink (for modern men). Our farm is a dairy farm. We retail the milk from our cows, much of it through local shops and businesses. We also have the Milk Bar on Hall Lane at St Michael’s. This has been so much fun. It’s a joy to read peoples’ comments on the suggestions board, so positive and encouraging at a time when morale is so low in the dairy industry. We have had suggestions that we should sell everythingfromteabagstotoiletrolls! My husband sets out the Milk Bar early in the morning, I’manowl not a lark! Then in theevening we bring most things indoors leaving emergency pints out over night. This is the part of the day when I feel like Arkwright from “Open All Hours”, I do tend to look up at the sky and think ‘It’s been a funny old day’.Anne Swale

COSMIC COLOURSWhat a remarkable mini ‘Indian Summer’ we all experienced. Along with the amazing cosmic colour of the rare, rusty red moon and its eclipse, came the wonderful sunsets and sunrises.

I watched through a light mist, morning sunbeams illuminating millions of dew diamonds clinging to leaves and pine needles. Delicate gossamer spiders webs glittering with dew, the leaves turning to yellow, gold then red. Natures work of art. If fortunate, you may havecaughtaglimpseoftheAuroraBorealis!

DOWN TO EARTHCall me unreasonable, but at this time of year I have a real problem with leaves. We don’t have any trees in our front garden, yet we seem to attract lots of other people’s autumn debris. Why can’t leaves stay in their own gardens? Instead they migrate wherever they please, making the place look like it needs a good vacuum. Irritatingly the minute you sweep up the soggy visitors from Number 20, they’re replaced by some new unwanted guests from Number 33. Very frustrating. Well boringly, as you probably know, it’s cleaning up time. All that tedious washing of pots, sluicing the greenhouse, scrubbing the tools and making sure that everything is spick and span for the new growing year in four or fivemonth’stime. For us, cleaning up seems to have become a fulltime occupation having been joined by a new member of the family. Withanewbabyboyandafifteenmontholdtoddler dishwashers and washing machines are on overdrive and there isn’t a surface in the house where there isn’t evidence of small children in residence. Naturally in our own home this has led to even less time for removing leaves, clearing out raised vegetable beds, pruning and weeding. If, unlike us, you have a bit more spare time on your hands then there are other things still to do this month. They include cutting back perennials that have died down, dividing herbaceous perennials and rhubarb crowns, moving tender plants including aquatic ones, into the greenhouse, planting out spring cabbages, pruning climbing roses and renovating old lawns or creating new grass areas by laying turf.I hope many of you got creative with your pumpkins this year. Interestingly the damp weather in August affected pumpkin quality and yield – some farmers lost half of their

produce. Retailers won’t take any fruits with minor blemishes or soft spots as these progress into full-blown issues in the depots and in the ambient temperature of stores. However you could always have a go a growing your own and now is a good time to start thinking about it. Pumpkins are great fun to grow with children. They are easy to cultivate, but need a sunny position, plenty of water and shelter from cold winds. Oneofthefinestsightsofautumniscolourfulpumpkins ripening in the sun - they are an essential part of Halloween and also attractive in the garden. Once harvested, pumpkins can be used for delicious soup and for roasting. Seeds can be bought in most garden centres and online and should be sown indoors in April or

My name is Eleanor and in Dec 2016 I am fortunate enough to be making a visit to Utugi Boy’s Home in Kenya which provides a base to support local street children within a Christian environment. It has classrooms, a multi-purpose hall and houses 58 boys aged 7-19 years who all attend local schools. We are fundraising for a number of different projects. Please come and support us with our Car Wash on Sat 14th Nov 11:00am -1:00pm £3.50 at St. Oswald’s Parish Hall Car Park plus tea, coffee and cake.Eleanor Bullen (01253) 812089
