President’s Message

Hopefully everybody has dried out from Hershey. The month of October was very busy with Hershey, a Fun Run Week-end that included a tour to Shirley Plantation on Saturday, and on Sunday a trip to the Hawthorne museum. Hugh and Mary Penn graciously opened their house for the tour. Great stuff to see and even better stories.

Thanks again Hugh & Mary Penn. The following weekend the club had its annual steak

fry. A special thank you goes out to the Camerons, for once again being the resident cooks. Also, a thank you also goes out to the Franciscos. Their Lakeside Farmers Market really worked well for the Steak Fry.

We kicked off this month with a great day at the Car Show in Urbanna. With friends from the Richmond Region, the entire day was awesome.

On Saturday November 16 we will have a very special Cruise-In to the Magnolias of Chesterfield. Fellow club mem-ber Tommy Cox lives there and he is very excited to hear that his friends from The Richmond Region are coming there on the 16th.

Our annual Christmas Party is planned for December 15th at the Rumble Seat Grill. There will be a Buffet dinner. Cost for the Buffet is $20 per person. We will start at 4:30, and dinner at 5:00. After dinner we will have our Chinese auction. If you wish to play men bring gifts for men, and women bring gifts for women. Hopefully Dayton will be mas-ter of ceremonies again. All those planning to attend will have to let Alice know by December 1st.

Also while I'm talking about money. Your dues are com-ing up AACA National, and Richmond Region, so get them in by December 31.

See you soon!

THE RICHMOND NEWS LEADER

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 25, 1970 PAGE 17His Interest is Historic Thomas A. Cox collects old things that have something to do with historic Richmond.

Recently he was impressed with the potential fertility of money when he came into posses-sion of a $5 City of Richmond Bond, paying 6% annual interest which was issued in 1893. It bears a picture of the old City Hall which did not go into service until the next year.

At compound interest our desk- top computer tells us that $5 would have grown during the 77 years to $444.14. Had it been invested to be compounded semi-annually instead of annu-ally, it would have grown to $474.14.

But that’s just dreaming, Mr. Cox’s $5 city bond was for a one-year term, and a hole punched in it indicates that it was long since redeemed.

He values it highly as he does a large collection of other things, including Richmond post-marks from back in the 1700s before there were postage stamps.

He works for the Postoffice Department, and houses his collection at his home on West 47th

Street. Right now his interests are centered on restoring parts of the canal that helped put Rich-mond more firmly on the map._Houston

Editor’s Note: This article from the Richmond News Leader was found in the Club History Archive. It has been reprinted for this issue of the Gas Light. The Photo of Tommy was taken about 43 years ago. Tommy served the club well as its Historian for many years. He embossed every article and filed them in binders. The records he kept so meticulously are now valuable re-sources that preserve the rich history of our club.

Tommy currently resides at the Magnolias Of Chester-field Assisted Living Facility.. The Club has planned a Very Special Cruise-In on November 16 at Magnolia of Chesterfield. Please see page 4 of this Newsletter for all the details.

Tour Weekend - Fun Run to Shirley Richmond Region Tour Weekend!

6

Thirteen Members of the Richmond Region AACA kicking off the Rich-mond Region Tour Weekend. The weather let us down a bit because it was a light drizzle of rain on and off throughout the day. Bob Richmon

left the tour starting point enthusiastically with his top down. Surely the sun would be coming out later in the morning.

After about thirty minutes, Bob stopped for a pit stop to raise the top so that the ride to the restraint would be more comfortable. We had a wonderful lunch at the Dockside Restaurant and enjoyed the fellowship and the views of the James River. From there we headed for Shirley Plantation. Shirley is rich in history and the tour was done very well with the leadership of our tour guide.

Attending the Shirley Tour were George & Beverly Field, Bob & Carol Robb, Jeffrey, Jeanneane & Wyatt Williams, Cindi Nash, Morris & Alice Cameron, Bob Richmon, Joe Kameros, and Jerry Andres.

We bid our fairwells and were already looking forward to part II of the Fun Runthe next afternoon at Hugh and Mary Penn Hawthorne’s. Many spent the rest of theevening and the next morning anticipatinganother great day with friends in the Richmond AACA. All those interesting things at theHawthorne’s plus all the wonderful stories were sure to entertain, not to mention later we would be eating together at Extra Billy’s Barbeque.

The Great Steak Fry The Annual Steak Fry was held at the Lakeside Farmers Market. The event brought out many club members and their families. There was food fit for a king that was prepared by each member that brought their favorite covered dish to share. The resident Chef Extraordinaire, Morris Cameron selected some of the best steaks in our area and cooked them to perfection. His wife Alice

assisted him taking care of all those details that make these events so enjoyable.
