Gas Quality Tracking Systems:
Regulatory requirements in Germany
authority permission by the boards of weights and measures
technical approval by the national metrology institute (PTB)
complete system is treated like a gauged measurement device
verified measurement instruments for input values, e.g.:
1% for volume measurement
1% for superior calorific value measurement
0,5% for normal density measurement
6Gas Quality Reconstruction at E.ON Gastransport [SIMONE Congress 2008] Jörg Bödeker, Dr. Dietrich Weise
Validation of Gas Quality Tracking Results
reference measurement points at critical line sections(e.g. blending or transition zones)
use of approved process gas chromatographs (12 components)
validation is based on daily average values for:
Superior calorific value Hs: 1%
Gas law deviation factor K: 0,8% at 100 bar and 0°C, AGA-8 (K is dependant on the gas composition, K = Z/Zn)
Normal density n: 0,5%
7Gas Quality Reconstruction at E.ON Gastransport [SIMONE Congress 2008] Jörg Bödeker, Dr. Dietrich Weise
Features of the Reconstruction System
One network model for dispatching and reconstruction
Input data from two independant systems(dispatching and data retrieval system)
Calculation in 3 minute time steps (important for mixing stations)
Calculation of calorific value, normal density and gas compositionfor each exit point in hourly and daily granularity
Approval for daily average values
Automatic hourly reconstruction calculation with time offset (6 hours)
Preliminary daily values (D+1)
Final daily values for billing purposes (2nd day M+1)

Typical Calorific Values
Low Calorific Gas(L-Gas Market Area)
9,6 .. 10,3 kWh/m³(34,5 .. 37 MJ/m³)
High Calorific Gas(H-Gas Market Area)
11,1 .. 11,8 kWh/m³(40 .. 42,5 MJ/m³)

Overview functionality for result and input data survey
in the gas quality reconstruction system
problem: large amount of data
solution: hierarchical data model & aggregated status information
existing hierarchical data model in the dispatching system:1. type of value 2. network 3. station 4. group 5. unit 6. equipment 7. signal

Conclusion
experts are essential for routine operations and maintenance
processing time very long – 8 hours for one month
(2 hours calculation + 6 hours data transfer via SIMONE API)
results of tracking system improve and simplify
billing operation and balancing
reduced investment in additional gas quality measurement
instruments
new data analysis features help to improve overall quality
(network model and data)
