Why PSU’s choose GATE?PSU’s like Power Grid, NTPC, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL etc have started accepting GATE qualified applicants because the test not only examines the technical skills, but also the logical and analytical ability of a person.

Basic aptitude tests don’t say much about the competence of a candidate. GATE is an assurance of the applicant’s potential to get selected for recruitment procedure.

One needs to be very strong in fundamentals while appearing for the exam this time, as repetition from previous years question pattern is highly unlikely.

Securing good grades in GATE is an important criterion to get qualified for different Government Organizations and to embark on the journey of attaining highly coveted jobs in PSU’s.

GATE Percentile ScoreThe percentile score of a candidate indicates the percentage of candidates who appeared in the same paper and scored less marks than him/her.

It is calculated as follows: ((Total No of Students appeared in your subject- Your Rank)/(Total No of students-1))*100

Suppose 200000 people appeared in the exam

Example 1 Your rank is 100Percentile = ((200000-100)/(200000-1))*100 = 99.95%

Example 2 Your rank is 1 Percentile = ((200000-1)/(200000-1))*100 = 100%

Example 3 Your rank is 200000Percentile = ((200000-200000)/(200000-1))*100 = 0%

the GATE score is computed from             S =    Sq  +  ( St  -  Sq )  (  M - Mq )  /  (  Mt  -  Mq  )

where,S = GATE Score (normalised) of a candidate,M = Marks obtained by a candidate in a paper,Mq = Qualifying marks for general category candidates in the paper,Mt = Average Marks of top 0.1% or 10 (which ever is higher) of candidates in the paper,St = GATE Score assigned to Mt (around 900), andSq = GATE Score assigned to Mq (around 300).Mq is usually 25 marks (out of 100) or μ+σ, whichever is higher. Here μ is the mean of marks in a paper and σ is the standard deviation.

How to tackle the paper •Start the paper with one-mark question•Then go to Two-marks questions from Common Data and Linked Answer Questions. •Then go to General Aptitude section. •All these should be done in a timeframe of 100-110 minutes. •Now go to questions in the technical portion and we can allot 50 minutes to this comfortably. •At the end, you must have 15-20 minutes for a quick revision of the answer sheet to ensure all is in order.

•While attempting the paper, leave questions which you are not sure of. •The most deciding factor is negative marking. •Avoid making any guesses and try to eliminate choices by analysis and calculations.
