St. Gabriel Mayor Lionel Johnson was the guest speaker for the Iberville Chamber membership luncheon held May 18 at Gabriel’s House of Events.

Sponsored by East Iberville-INC., the event drew more than 50 members. In his talk, Johnson provided exciting news about economic development progress in St. Gabriel.

Career Connections, the pop-ular career information event for Iberville students, is being moved to Nov. 9 this school year.

The last Career Connec-tions was held in February, but school representatives told the Chamber that October is a much better time of the school year for them to have students attend the event.

In February, approximately 650 Iberville students got a dose of real life financial costs, along with information about numerous careers at the Carl Grant Civic Center in Plaquemine.

Sophomores and juniors from public schools and sophomores through seniors from St. John were bused to the civic center. Students visited booths, where

they received information about the educational requirements, du-ties and pay of various jobs from representatives of more than 50 careers.

The students also participated in living within a budget based on their career pay at the “reality store.” The store is designed to show them actual living expenses of an average 29-year-old per-son, and the link between the income of their career choice and real life living expenses.

School administrators have raved about the impact and posi-tive results of the program with students. Likewise, the students have said it was very beneficial to talk with representatives about various jobs, and to get real life figures on the costs of living.

From the ExecutiveDirector

We are excited to announce information on our “Dancing With the Stars” event on the front of this newsletter. We are very confident that this one will be as successful as last year’s inaugural event, which drew a huge crowd and was enjoyed by everyone.

We are currently seeking our sponsors, so get on board early! Tickets will go fast. And, I’d like to say a personal thank you to all our dancers for their efforts on behalf of the Chamber.

We wrapped up our fifth Leadership Iberville program in May, with the graduation of our 17 participants. It was great to hear from them that they gained valuable insight and team building skills in the monthly sessions.

We will begin taking applications for the 2016-2017 class very soon, and the sessions will begin in September. Please consider participating, or having someone from your business participate. It’s a great experience and produces more valuable employees!

As you know, the special La. Legislative session is underway. We are continuing to monitor bills critical to Louisiana businesses, with special attention being given to bills impacting economic development. The session ends on June 23 and there is much to be done between now and then.

Finally, the staff of the Chamber wishes you a happy and safe summer, as we gear up for plenty of activity this fall!
