The three Olympic Training Centers, spreadacross the nation, are accessed by more than14,000 U.S. athletes a year. Gateway products areused for training programs, advanced security,online communications and network access.

August 13 through the 29, 2004, the U.S. OlympicTeam will participate in the 2004 Olympic Games inAthens, Greece. In cooperation with the U.S.Embassy in Athens, Gateway is donating PC

hardware for a security command center that willaid with heightened security during the Games.

So, how did the relationship between Gatewayand the Olympics begin? It all started in 2000 withthe preparation for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

Background The first modern Games were held in Athens,

Greece in 1896. The Olympic Games as we knowthem today, were created to increase world peacethrough sport.

ChallengeTo prepare for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games,

the Salt Lake Olympic Committee (SLOC) needed ahardware provider to deliver servers and PCs to every event venue within the Olympic Village,while coordinating with various third party software,hardware and communications providers.

Gateway Solution As the official hardware supplier of the 2002

Olympic Winter Games, Gateway delivered morethan 5,400 servers and PCs to Salt Lake City.

The Games would require enough computingpower to support over 28,000 Olympic employeesand volunteers. In press rooms, reporters wouldneed to access real time event results in dozens ofdifferent languages. Olympic athletes needed theability to exchange e-mails with fans around theworld. To accomplish these objectives, powerfulservers will be required to keep all of the technologyup and running.

Two server platforms,a primary and a backup,were deployed to eachevent location. Dozensof other servers went tosupport data centers, as well as the press,transportation, securityand broadcast activities.

With two identical servers at each event and RAIDdata storage, everything was redundant. Constantreal time communication between the primary server, the data center and the back-up serverhelped to guarantee that the primary server couldfailover to the backup server at a moment’s notice.

Gateway also provided Intel®-based computersfor the PC Factory and Integration Lab, deploying,installing and powering-up an astonishing 182 systems in less than four hours.

Return on Investment From a technical standpoint, the 2002 Olympic

Games went into the record books as one of themost trouble-free in recent history. In all, 306Gateway servers, 3,480 desktop PCs, 509 notebooksand 1,141 Gateway Profile PCs were used. Followingthe closing ceremonies, the systems were used tomanage the breakdown of the events and donatedto multiple causes.
