PRESEASON FAVORITESThe Gators were chosen as the 2018 SEC Favorites by the league’s coaches. Florida was picked to win the Eastern Division and overall title. UF had 12 first place votes as overall champions while Arkansas and Texas A&M each had one vote.

In addition, Florida had a league-high three selections on the Preseason All-SEC First Team: 3B Jonathan India, SP Brady Singer and RP Michael Byrne. Senior JJ Schwarz was voted to the Second Team as both a catcher and DH/utility player.

HISTORIC SEASONFlorida won its first national championship in school history, sweeping LSU in the CWS Finals. With the title, the Florida Gators became one of six schools to win a national championship in baseball, basketball and football, joining Cal, Michigan, Ohio State, Stanford and UCLA. The Gators are the only program to win a title in each sport in the last 50 years. UF won football titles in 1996, 2006 and 2008 and back-to-back basketball titles in 2006 and 2007.

Florida earned its sixth trip to the CWS in the past eight seasons. Only North Carolina (2006-13) has made six CWS appear-ances in an eight-year span since the tournament expanded in 1999.

RECORD BREAKERMichael Byrne emerged as the Gators’ closer in 2017 and went on to record 19 saves, most in the nation last year and a new single-season school record. He finished the year with a 1.67 earned run average, fifth-best among returning players in the NCAA this season and best among returning pitchers in the SEC.

CLOSE GAMESFlorida played 26 one-run games with a nation’s best 19 one-run wins. In 2016, UF had just 17 one-run games all season (68 total games) with a 10-7 record in those contests. See Chart ->

SEC LEADERSThe Gators led the SEC in the following categories in 2017 (national rank in parentheses):

MILESTONE FOR O’SULLIVANHead coach Kevin O’Sullivan picked up his 435th career win against Kentucky (5/19/17) to pass Joe Arnold for the sec-ond-most wins in UF history. He became the quickest UF baseball coach to reach the 400-win mark last year against Miami, taking just 590 games to accomplish the feat. O’Sullivan has taken the Gators to 6 of its 11 CWS trips (2010-12, 2015-17).
