A Fond Farewell toSylvia DeSylva Frank(Nov. 29, 1914-Oct. 24, 2010)

Sylvia DeSylva Frank, a legend-ary philanthropist, and dearfriend to the GLBT community,

passed away October 24, 2010. A celebra-tion of her life was hosted by The FriendlyBar in New Orleans. The neighborhoodbar was packed to capacity as friendsgathered with her long-time partner PatSkelly to remember and toast Sylvia. Manyspoke out on the wonder that was SylviaFrank. One of Ambush's favorite memo-ries was at Sylvia's Surprise Birthday Partylast year when Sylvia stated, "Age is just anumber and mine is unlisted!"

Guests were treated to some greateats brought in by various patrons of thebar. After celebrating for an hour and a half

or so, white balloons and black pens were passed around for everyone to write theirpersonal message to Sylvia. Once the second line band arrived, patrons went outsidefor the balloon release. One guest noted that all of the balloons had missed the power

lines and were head-ing uptown whereSylvia and Pat resided.

The second lineband then headed toFeeling's Cafe for achampagne toast, thenon to Big Daddy's andback to The Friendly tocomplete the celebra-tion.

She will be sadlymissed by Pat and allof her friends and thosethat got the chance toknow her.

The three-day weekend show opens Friday, Decem-ber 3 with an elegant preview party and seated dinnerfeaturing classic New Orleans restaurants. Tickets for theparty are $150 and $250 per person.

The show is open to the public on Saturday, Decem-ber 4 from 10am to 6:30pm, and on Sunday, December 5,from 12noon to 5pm. General admission is $15.

“New Orleans has long been a center for art andantiques, and also good living,” Stahr said. “We designedthe show’s programs and events to reflect that ambience.It’s all about connoisseurship and conviviality.”

“Repeal DADT” iPhoneApplication Released

Servicemembers United, the nation’s largest organizationof gay and lesbian troops and veterans, has released itsfirst iPhone application. The application, called “Repeal

DADT,” can be downloaded for free from the iPhone app storeimmediately.

“We are proud and excited to be able to offer our community thisinnovative new advocacy tool, especially as we approach anotherperiod in which being informed and calling senate offices will becrucial,” said Jarrod Chlapowski, Servicemembers United’s FieldDirector. “Despite the lowest budget of any organization working onthe ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ issue, Servicemembers United is committedto creativity, innovation, and outside-the-box thinking, and this iPhoneapp is the latest manifestation of that mindset.”

Servicemembers United’s “Repeal DADT” iPhone applicationprovides users with a wide array of current information on the statusof DADT, facts and talking points, extensive polling data on gays in themilitary, and links to DADT-related social media sites and ongoingonline campaigns. The app also provides contact information for thesenate offices of each state and incorporates tap-to-call functionality,allowing users to call their senators’ offices directly from the app. Morefunctionality and features will be added in subsequent updates.

This development and release of an iPhone application as apolitical advocacy tool is a first for an LGBT organization. Anotherapplication was released in 2009 that displays the rankings of privatecorporations with respect to LGBT equality, but that applicationcontained no political advocacy functionality. The “Repeal DADT”iPhone app was developed for Servicemembers United by Wells
