ONLY HUMAN

by Constance Merritt

By the light of the new-minted moon You dream the fox's dream Of chickens.

Mornings you bask in the lizard sun And at the end of summer leave Your cast-off skin on the cast- Off river stone.

The owl's slow ghosting cry Hushes your heart; You shriek without waking From your mouse's dream.

Moon at the full, A lycanthrope, you prowl.

In the end as in the beginning, The hale abandon the halt To fang and claw.

Callaloo 23.1 (2000) 45
