December 2009

Dear Guests of WinterPRIDE: Whistler is proud to welcome the world as we play host to the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games. Whistler continues to embrace diversity and work with our community partners to make our resort one of the leading mountain destina-tions that celebrate a culture that embraces being inclusive. 2010 is a historic year for Whistler as not only do we celebrate a huge international event like the Olympics but also our local community has had an active role in helping shape the look and feel of the games.

We are proud of the work GayWhistler has done in creating a pavilion, PRIDEHouse, during the games to celebrate that diversity and to have the foresight in moving the annual festival to transition from the Olympics to WinterPRIDE to the Paralympic Winter Games. We are sure you will find the 18th Anniversary of Gay Ski Week to be extraordinary indeed!

We hope you take the time to explore the magical experience our resort has to offer. Enjoy some of the best alpine and Nordic skiing, zip line canopy tours, snow shoeing in the Ancient Cedars to the plethora of spas; fine dining, shopping and exciting nightlife you have come to expect.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday and we do look forward welcoming you again whatever the season.

Warmest regards,

Ken MelamedMayor

The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are coming to Whistler and Vancouver and for the first time in Olympic history there will be a pavilion available to our LGBT team members, their families, friends and other allies. A pavilion we call - PRIDE House.

Designed with the core values of celebrating authenticity, diversity and inclusiveness, the PRIDE House pavilions will be located in Whistler and Vancouver, the two host communities for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The PRIDE House pavilions will provide a venue for the LGBT community to come together with family and friends to cheer on and celebrate the accomplishments of the Olympic & Paralympic athletes as they go for gold. The pavilions will include a hip lounge with a cocktail bar, along with TV monitors to watch the Olympics, hang out, trade pins, and just have fun. Special events will be scheduled throughout the 42 day period of the Games, from Feb. 8th through to March 21st, 2010. A highlight will be the Fearless Photo Exhibit showcasing OUT Athletes and their stories that is sponsored by the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation for the BC Centre of Excellence in HIV/AIDS. Other community-based events are also planned to raise awareness about homophobia and transphobia in general, as well as how it is manifest in sport.

PRIDE House Whistler: Located at the Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre, 4299 Blackcomb Way, will be the primary focus of PRIDE House during the games. Designed primarily for celebration you can expect various events planned throughout February & March including wine tastings with Barefoot Wines, fresh Ethical Bean Coffee brewed daily, official PRIDEMerchandise outlet, meet at 10AM to go skiing with the WinterPRIDE Ski Director, John Sutherland as he shows you some of the best turns on Whistler Blackcomb.

PRIDE House Vancouver: PRIDE House operational headquarters will be located within Qmunity, 1170 Bute Street, where various workshops, and resources will be available in-cluding issues relating to health, immigration, education, and social services. PRIDE House Vancouver’s primary celebration venue will be located at Score on Davie, 1262 Davie Street. Score on Davie is one of Vancouver’s most popular sports bar and located in the heart of the Gay Village was a perfect choice to have a Vancouver celebration place.

PRIDE House Advisory Board: PRIDE House has been a wonderful collection of various associations coming together to create a truly unique and unified pavilion that encompasses the LGBT community including: GayWhistler, Qmunity, CAAWS (Canadian Association for Advancement in Women in Sports & Physical Activity), Promotion Plus, Vancouver Pride Society, LEGIT/Rainbow Refugee, EGALE, ILGA, City of Vancouver LGBTQQI Committee, as well as individuals from the local LGBT communities.

PRIDE House Sponsors: PRIDE House has been made possible by the very generous support of community organizations and businesses that recognize the importance of a pavilion such as this to foster dialogue on homophobia and transphobia in sports and beyond. For more details and scheduling updates, please visit www.pridehouse.ca.

ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL PERKS TO MY 7 DAY, MID WEEK OR WEEKEND PASS?Yes, not only did you save some on the bundle pass, you have the flexibility of doing as much or as little as you want. It’s sort of like a Season Pass. You can also flash your pass to our retail partners and save or get a special gift!

ARE THERE GAY SKI/SNOWBOARD GUIDES FOR ALL LEVELS OF SKIERS/RIDERS?Yes, we have ski guides available every day for all levels of skiers & riders so come up and ski/ride with your level group. There are also lesbian led groups!

ARE TICKETS TRANSFERABLE OR REFUNDABLE? Regrettably No.

MY PARTNER AND I ARE LOOKING TO GET MARRIED. CAN WE DO THIS WHILE AT WINTERPRIDE? Yes, we have several options available for you; just contact guest services.

WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS TO GET BACK TO VANCOUVER? We have several options for you, visit our website www.gaywhistler.com under travel or see us at guest services.

IS IT TOO LATE TO VOLUNTEER? No, come on down to the guest services suite and talk with our Volunteer Manager Carson or one of our volunteer leads.

WHAT CAN I DO IF I DO NOT SKI OR SNOWBOARD? WILL I BE BORED? There are hundreds of things for you to do and you will not be bored! Stop by our guest services desk for more ideas and suggestions!

WHEN IS WINTERPRIDE 2011?January 30 – February 6th, 2011 so start planning now as we move back to our usual week.

WHY SHOULD WE BOOK THROUGH YOUR OFFICIAL BOOKING CHANNEL?This is one of the only tools we have available to give accurate numbers to our resort partners, in the success of the festival, and to ensure the continued value to you, the consumer. There is the lowest price guarantee so you can be assured you are getting the best rate available.

HOW COME THE MEN’S FULL WEEK AND EXTENDED WEEKEND PASSES COST SO MUCH MORE THAN THE WOMEN’S? CAN’T GUYS GET A BREAK? Good question. The men’s passes and the women’s passes include different events on Friday and Saturday nights, and the costs to produce these events differ quite a bit. The men’s MountainTOP Dance on Saturday night is on Whistler Mountain at the top of the gondola in the Roundhouse. The venue rental, gondola rental, food, decoration, lighting, sound and entertainment costs are much higher than the costs for the women’s party that night.

“ * “ All rates quoted in Canadian Dollars, subject to 5% GST tax, insurance and/or other fees maybe additional, space is limited, subject to general availability at time of reservation
