He has performed with the Boston Symphony and The Boston Pops (both, starting as a teenager), made his Carnegie Recital Hall debut at 25, and has appeared as piano soloist with the Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Minnesota Orchestras; the St. Louis, Dallas, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Houston, Singapore, Netherlands Radio, Latvian, Iceland, and London Symphony Orchestras; the Buffalo, Hong Kong, and Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestras; the National Symphony Orchestra of Brazil; and the major orchestras of Australia. His 22 recordings comprise works by over thirty composers. 1996 Pulitzer Prize winner, George Walker, composed for him.

Mr. Moyer punctuates his program – time-honored favorites as well as pieces you may be hearing for the first time – with brief anecdotes about the composers and his own contagious passion for music in all its forms. A MoyerCam projection system allows the audience to watch his hands throughout the program. CDs ($15) and books will be available after the performance. Cash, check, and credit cards accepted. Lifelong Learning Opportunities

Harper College: Mary Oliver - rsvp to *07 Thursday, February 6, 2:00-4:00 pm, Burnham Room

Mary Oliver, who spent a lifetime “making a world out of words,” passed away last year at 83. Her critics claim that her poetry is a little too sweet, a little too easy. But her admirers made her one of America’s most popular poets. She encouraged her readers to proclaim with her “When it’s over, I want to say, ‘all my life I was a bride married to amazement.’” In this talk, we’ll examine her life, her poetry of amazement, and her insights into the life of the spirit.

Harper College: Bursting the Corset, 19th Century Women Who Defied the Stereotypes, Part 1 - rsvp to *07 Tuesday, February 11, 1:00-3:00 pm, Burnham Room

A corset illustrates the lives of many women in the 19th century: constrained and forced into an unnatural shape. But not all women lived in such a constricted way. This course introduces you to ten remarkable women: spies, suffragists, agitators, reformers; women like Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Van Lew, and Mother Jones, who moved out of tightly-bound expectations and left an indelible mark on America. Class meets February 11th and 18th.

Harper College: Bursting the Corset, 19th Century Women Who Defied the Stereotypes, Part 2 - rsvp to *07, Tuesday, February 18, 1:00-3:00 pm, Burnham Room

See Bursting the Corset, Part 1, above.

Great Decisions with Gary Midkiff - rsvp to *07 Friday, February 14, 10:00-11:30 am, Eastlake Dining Room

Great Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs. This month’s topic, Climate Change, and the Global Order. As much of the world bands together to come up with a plan, the U.S. remains the notable holdout. What is the rest of the world doing to combat climate change? What impact will the effects of climate change have on global geopolitics?

If you would like to order the book ($32) for the 2020 series, which begins this month, please call Lynn (*13) and let her know you’d like to join this vibrant group of thinkers!

Harper College: And the Award Goes To… Might Makes Right, with Myra Loris - rsvp to *07 Friday, February 21, 10:30-11:30 am, Burnham Room

This talk looks at two historical examples of America at its apex in its role of economic, military, and moral leader of the world, doing what was necessary, and right, to become a prominent force for positive involvement in the global community. Myra focuses on the late 1940s, the Berlin Airlift, and the Marshall Plan. If you haven’t experienced Myra, come see why her fans never miss a Myra Loris talk.

Bulletin Board

What is the MAC? The Member Advisory Committee, a member-driven committee was created in 2005. They have a process for selecting members and leadership and meet bi-monthly or as needed. They serve as an active mechanism for members to share ideas and suggestions for improving services, programs, and The Garlands lifestyle. The committee has an open dialogue with the Administration and is helpful in guiding program development and enhancing current programs or practices.

Humidity Wintertime in northern Illinois requires heat in our apartments leading to dry air along with chapped skin and possible nose bleeds. The Garlands heating system does provide some humidity but for comfort, more may be required. Solution- a small humidifier of your own. Due to minerals in our water supply it is wise to use distilled water in the unit or you will notice white ‘dust’ on your furniture. Purchase distilled water at grocery and other stores or Members Services has it available for delivery and charged to your account.

Voting The Garlands provides transportation to the polls on March 17. Be sure you are registered to vote from your current Garlands address. Information on registering, early voting, and voting by mail is in the Resource Center, both on the bulletin board and as a flyer.

Games! Any Sheepshead players out there? Three Wisconsinites who miss playing very much are looking for more players. It’s a fun game… would you like to learn how to play? You could be an honorary Wisconsinite! Call Alice Van Egeren today!

We accept books published after 2010, classics, and current “best sellers,” both fiction and non-fiction.

Thank you, Your Library Committee (71204 for all questions)

Be Adventurous!

The sky is the limit for Fred and Natalie Sponsler.

Garlands members American Airlines pilot Fred and tax accountant Natalie were “fixed up” later in life by their fraternity brother teenage sons. Taking a risk on love again, the adventuresome Fred and Natalie began dating. A trained Air Force pilot and owner of his own Cirrus aircraft, Fred literally soared with Natalie through courtship, flying to dinner dates and weekend getaways across the country. Natalie confidently sat by Fred’s side in the cockpit to enjoy his bird’s-eye view of the world.

In twenty years of marriage, they’ve since voyaged by air, land and sea to all corners of the globe.

“You name it, we’ve been there!”

In between jaunts, Fred and Natalie continue to reach new heights – Natalie works part-time, and the couple plans future trips and Garlands date nights on the calendar with friends and family.
