The Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce Newsletter Volume 49, Issue 11TRANSCRIPT
Brad Evans said, “When I first
moved to Grover Beach and peo-
ple asked me where I lived, I
would usually say, „Oh, in a small
town next to Pismo Beach‟ or „I
live in the Five Cities area, south
SLO County‟. But, you know,
Grover Beach is coming of age
and now, I right out tell them „I
live in Grover Beach‟”. Along with
his wife, Lisa, Brad, lives in
Grover Beach, is raising a family
in Grover Beach, owns a busi-
ness in Grover Beach; and, he is
an active member of several
Grover Beach organizations help-
ing to guide the future growth
and development of the commu-
nity.
Lisa and Brad were both born
and raised in the valley. They
graduated from Tulare Union
High School in the early eighties
and, although they knew each
other in high school, love and
marriage came later. Brad at-
tended Long Beach State College
where, in
1985, he
received his
BA degree in
Radio, Televi-
sion and
Film. Later,
he returned
to school
earning his

and, for four
years, taught
at both Han-
ford and
St rathmore
High Schools. Brad and Lisa
were married in 1987; they have
two lovely children, daughter
Alex, 18 and son Rece, 15. After
they moved to the Five Cities
Area, Brad knew that teaching
was really not for him. He found
other work to occupy
his time; a disc jockey
at the Graduate, he
studied and became a
certified Ophthalmolo-
gy Assistant and
worked six years for
the doctors of Pacific
Eye Surgeons.
In 2006, after great
thought and much
discussion, Brad and
Lisa decided that they
would open a family
operated sandwich
shop. They found a
location just south of
West Grand Avenue across the
street from Vons and opened

We are well on our way to meet

2010 with 35+ new members.
Thank you for all of your referrals
and assistance with our new

Now in November, we are active-

assist us in leading our great
organization. Our finance com-
mittee is working on the 2011
budget and the ambassador
team is beginning to plan our
Installation Dinner.
With Thanksgiving right around
the corner, we have been work-
ing hard on our year-end plan-
ning! We participated with the
city of Grover Beach in a celebra-
tion of the new Grover Beach
Walk district. We are in the mid-
dle of a membership drive to
increase our business represen-
tation in and around the Five
Cities area. We had a successful

wrapping up board nominations
for 2011-2012.

Stacked Sandwiches; premium,
handcrafted sandwiches that not
only have good taste, but also
have public appeal with funny
names: Jane Doe, The Oinker,
The Mobster, Lisa‟s Stack,
Fishbreath, The Treehugger, The
Hippy Chick, The Moo Cow, The
Philly Wonka; names that attract
independent thinkers. After the
initial start-up, Lisa followed her
medical career, developing and
managing surgical centers leav-
ing Brad and his merry workers
to run the shop.
Brad is an active member of the
Grover Beach Chamber of Com-
merce Board of Directors. Brad
said, “It‟s gratifying to see this
very diverse and dynamic Board
led by a great CEO who has
brought a lot of professionalism
and energy to
the Chamber.”
Brad knows
that it has been
a struggle for a
lot of business-
es in town in-
cluding his own
but staying
open means
you are proba-
bly doing better
than some real-
tors, mortgag-
ers and phar-
m a c e u t i c a l
s a l e s m e n .
“Compared to
some others,”
he said, “We
are doing well.
In one word, the
key is „differentiation‟, meaning
doing something different; a
different package.” In his busi-
ness he stresses premium quali-
ty products, the highest quality
meat, cheeses, bread and truly
great customer service. “We
want to be your friendly, neigh-
bor sandwich shop!” he said.
Brad is the vice chair of the
Grover Beach Planning Commis-
sion. An interesting job to Brad,
one filled with new knowledge of
how government works and how
permits are obtained to start
businesses and/or initiate devel-
opment. “It‟s a fascinating pro-
cess,” he said. “For example, the
term „Ocean View‟ can be mis-
leading as adjoining neighbors
(Board continued from page 1) may have the right to build and
impact your ocean view. We try
to work out situa-
tions where the
„view‟ can be sus-
tained as much as
possible.” Commis-
sion meetings lately
have been focused
on what the City
might be able to do
in terms of incen-
tives to developers
and builders to do
business here. “We
have a great city
staff; they are in-
formative and helpful and make
our job as the intermediary be-
tween the paid staff and the city
council a lot easier.”
He is an active member of the
Rotary club of Grover Beach cur-
rently heading up the Rotary
Foundat io n
Service. One
of the fea-
tured Rotary
International
world service
programs is
the elimina-
tion of polio
t h r o ug ho ut
the world. “I
have always
believed in
service or-
ganizat ions
such as Rota-
ry, Kiwanis,
Lions and
their involve-
ment and
service to the
community. I
immensely enjoyed Lisa‟s being
the president of our Rotary last
year; and, I immensely enjoyed it
when her term was over.” To this
end, Stacked Sandwiches now
offers the Rotary Sandwich; a
portion of the sales of which will
go toward polio eradication. The
Evan‟s are also heavy donors to
local youth programs supporting
local athletic teams and services.
“I can‟t say no to charities,” he
said. “Kids are important and
I‟m always working on a balance
between charity work, my busi-
ness and my family.”
“I should tell everyone that I am
a radio talk show junky; I listen to
all viewpoints so I can make
informed decisions. I am also
intrigued with how to incorporate
the use of social media; e-mail,
twitter, Facebook,
etc., to benefit and
promote business.”
Brad says he has
used it successfully to
the point where many
other business own-
ers call him for infor-
mation. Because of
this, he is setting up
Stacked Marketing
Associates where he
will help other busi-
ness learn how to get
the most cost -
effective use of their marketing
budget. “The next wave will be
the use of video emails using a
web cam, click a button and off it
goes to others. Pretty exciting!”
he said.
His other idea is to eventually
have a Stacked Food Truck.
Brad said, “They can see our
daily location through Twitter or
Facebook, then place their order
through their blackberry, IPhone
or whatever; and then they can
come pick up the food at our
location. This way we can get our
product all over the county.”
Brad explained a personal chal-
lenge: “I have a love/hate rela-
tionship with Joy, my personal
trainer at Kennedy Club Fitness. I
hate when she makes me work
so hard, but love the way I am
beginning to feel. I‟m committed
to getting back into shape and
I‟m actually beginning to wear
clothes I haven‟t worn for a year.
We‟ve added a new Low-cal sec-
tion to our menu, the FitStack;
non-fat products, low carbs and
low calories. Not only is it good
for you, it‟s also good tasting.”
Brad also said that he loves to
write and he is looking for an
opportunity to use his creative
juices in the medium.

Each year during National Small Busi-ness Week, the U. S. Small Business
Administration (SBA) recognizes
outstanding small business owners for their contribution to the American
economy and society. The President
has declared May 15-22, 2011 as Na-
tional Small Business Week.
SBA is currently accepting nomina-
tions for several SBA award categories including the 2011 Small Business of
the Year Award. The Fresno SBA
Office services the fifteen Central
California counties. Trade associa-
tions, chambers of commerce and
business organizations frequently spon-sor candidates. A business owner may
also nominate themselves or other
candidates.
As part of National Small Week, busi-nesses located throughout Central
California will be honored with local
community events. Through the work of entrepreneurs, jobs are created,
families are given a better life and
whole communities are trans-formed. Please join us in the National
Small Business Week celebration.
Nomination criteria and deadline dates
for all award categories can be found
by visiting the SBA website at
