2 Introduction Patient monitoring equipment comprises of monitors used to measure and record the vital signs of patients. These monitors are used in hospitals, the home and ambulatory settings. Patient monitoring devices measure the vital parameters continuously or at regular intervals. Therefore, they differ from diagnostic devices which measure these parameters through single testing procedures.

Patient monitoring devices are primarily differentiated into multiparameter and standalone devices. A multiparameter monitor displays multiple vital parameters in one screen whereas a standalone monitor can display only one parameter at a time.

Various important parameters can be measured using patient monitoring devices. Some of the parameters are:

Heart Rate (HR)

Oxygen saturation (SpO2)

Systematic pressures including Systolic Systemic Arterial Pressure (SSAP), Systemic Diastolic Arterial Pressure (SDAP) and Sleep Mean Arterial Blood Pressure (SMAP)

Core temperatures (inside the heart)

Respiratory rate (RR)

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Peripheral temperature Cardiac Output Index (CI)

Central Venous Pressure (CVP)

Pulmonary pressures including Pulmonary Systolic Artery Pressure (PSAP), Pulmonary Diastolic Artery Pressure (PDAP) and Mean Pulmonary Artery Pressure (PMAP)

End-Tidal Carbon Dioxide (ETCO2)

Intracranial Pressure (ICP)

Electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure and record the electrical activity of the brain by using sensors (electrodes)
