Gas traps/purifiers are recommended, even with ultra-high purity gases. Trace contaminants can cause unstable baselines, high detector noise, ghost peaks and even column damage. Oxygen is especially detrimental to more-polar columns and can cause oxidation of the stationary phase, column bleed, loss of retention as well as reduced column lifetimes.

Keep trace impurities in your system gases below 1 ppm by "scrubbing" moisture first with a high capacity moisture trap. The Combo™ Oxygen/Moisture Trap incorporates a revolutionary new scrubbing media with twice the surface area for high capacity. Discover how you can improve analytical results using high sensitivity GC-MS and ECD detectors when oxygen and moisture are efficiently removed from the gas stream. Remember, even trace levels of these "bad actors" in your carrier gas can degrade your separation or even destroy your capillary column, particularly columns composed of more polar phases and/or thicker films. Their sensitivity to oxygen increases approximately one order of magnitude for every 20 °C increase in operating temperature. At the typical upper temperature limits of these phases (200 to 240 °C) even minute traces of oxygen and water will cause severe degradation/damage to the column.

The Combo Trap is a one-piece, aluminum canister that contains a highly active, metal-based, inlet support reagent capable of scrubbing oxygen in the gas stream to less than 15 ppb. Up to 2 g of moisture can also be removed by this trap with no effect on the oxygen-removing capacity. Filled under a heated flow of ultra-high purity helium, this trap is ready to go to work.

Excellent for argon-methane mixtures used with ECDs, this trap effectively prevents degradation of the detector's radioactive source. For GC-MS applications, no extensive purging is necessary as with other traps prepared with nitrogen. In addition to inert gases (nitrogen, helium, argon and krypton) the Phenomenex Combo Trap treats streams of hydrogen, alkanes, alkenes, aliphatic hydrocarbon gases, low boiling aromatics, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

A 40 µm stainless steel frit is pressed into each end fitting and the unit is tested to 2000 psi for integrity. Available with 1/8" or 1/4" fittings, the popular Combo Trap is highly dependable and a very cost-effective option for your system.

The Merlin Microseal Septum is a long-life replacement for the standard septum on the capillary inlet or the purged-packed inlet of Agilent GC systems.

The Microseal is a patented inlet assembly that provides two distinct sealing mechanisms. The first is a double O-ring seal around the syringe that ensures gas leak integrity during time of injection. There is no traditional septum to core or flake, which can cause bleeding and ghost peaks, and less force is required for the user to make a manual injection. The second seal is a spring-assisted duckbill that reliably maintains a high-pressure seal within the injection port at all times.

Since the syringe does not pierce any septum material, seal lifetime is significantly extended – Microseals are typically used for up to one year or more under normal conditions before septum replacement. Many laboratories experience lifetimes of 5,000 to 10,000 injections or more. This means you save tremendously in time changing septa, instrument downtime and troubleshooting.

Syringes for use With the Merlin Microseal™

Chromatographic performance will also improve due to less bleed and fewer ghost peaks, improving quantitation and data reliability.

Instrument Compatibility: The Merlin Microseal systems can be used manually with all Agilent 5800 and 6800 series GCs. However, for autosampler use it is compatible with only the 7673A and 7673B units. Other inlets or autosampler systems from Agilent or other manufacturers are not compatible.

(1) Complete High Pressure Kits include the nut and one or two Microseal septa. All High Pressure Kits are rated for inlet pressures up to 100 psi. For long-term operation (>6 months) with the Microseal septum use the following injection port limits: (a) Agilent 6890, 5890 Series II - 325 °C; (b) Agilent 5890A - 300 °C.

Higher temperatures will result in shorter lifetimes. (2) The Merlin Microseal Septum should only be used with a blunt-tipped, 0.63 mm diameter (0.025”, 23 gauge) syringe needle (typically used with the Agilent 7673 autosampler). Sharp-pointed or sharp-edged needles should not be used as they may slice or pierce the seals.

The Tapered FocusLiner™ can markedly improve reproducibility and results. In the original FocusLiner design a glass wool plug is held fast in the ideal position in the injection liner to provide extra surface area for vaporization as well as wipe the needle of any residual sample once withdrawn. The wool also traps any nonvolatile sample residue, maintaining a cleaner column inlet. Reliable, Accurate Flow MeasurementThe Phenomenex Zephyr™ 500HR Digital Gas Flow Meter is an excellent choice for all your flow applications. The unit provides reliable accurate real-time measurements for all your gas streams. With seven gas NIST-traceable calibrations, 2 % of reading accuracy, and a measuring range from 0.01-500 mL/min, one flow meter replaces several separate flow meters for GC, SFC, SFE, industrial hygiene, biotechnology and general laboratory applications.

The flow meter works equally well with positive and negative (vacuum) flow sources and may be placed in-line for continuous flow measurement. Use it to monitor flow to traps, sorbent tubes, incubators, fermentors, or reaction vessels without interrupting gas flow.

Compared to most other general-purpose flow meters, the Zephyr offers a wider flow range and higher resolution (0.01 mL/min), and with the accuracy and precision you need at low flowrates. Don’t waste money purchasing any other flow meter. The unit’s auto-ranging display shows two decimal places (0.01 mL/min resolution) for reading less than 10 mL/min. It is good for setting capillary GC flow or for leak testing. Its high sensitivity easily detects even the smallest of leaks.

Rugged and ReproducibleThe rugged solid-state sensor with microprocessor controller measures true mass flow without the ambient temperature and pressure change errors that affect soap film and acoustic sensor meters. There’s also no water-vapor error (up to 5 %) that plagues soap film techniques. You’ll obtain precise, accurate flow measurement with no liquids, no bubbles, no waiting and no hassles!

Unlike competitive flowmeters, the Zephyr 500HR Digital Gas Flow Meter tolerates water vapor, making it suitable for purge and trap applications. If the sensor is exposed to an exceedingly moist sample, simply purge the sensor with dry gas for several minutes to restore performance.

Each unit’s straight-through gas flow path reduces backpressure, internal volume, and sensor purge time. Readings stabilize quickly and measurements at low flow rate are accurate and precise.

Versatile Fittings & Flow AdaptorsThe flow meter includes interchangeable fittings and 1/32” and 1/8” ID tubing. Use the smaller tubing for low-flow measurements. The larger tubing minimizes backpressure for high-flow measurements.

Flow adaptors make convenient, leak-free connections to all of your flow sources. The unit includes General Purpose and Agilent split vent adaptors. The General Purpose adaptor connects to Agilent FID, split vent traps, packed GC columns, and gas lines. The Agilent split vent adaptor connects to Agilent GC split vents. The unit also includes a capillary column adaptor.

nIST Traceable CalibrationThe Zephyr 500HR Digital Gas Flow Meter is calibrated with seven gases using NIST traceable standards. An economical recalibration service maintains the unit’s performance, and includes minor repairs and an NIST-traceable calibration certificate. The certificate includes percent error data indicating how far your meter was out of calibration, helping you meet ISO, GLP, GMP and other quality system requirements. The unit is CE approved.

SGE Syringes For Valco®, Rheodyne®, Waters®, PerkinElmer®, and CTC/LeapThe syringes are fitted with a special dome-tipped removable needle to prevent needle seal damage in the valve and are of a specific length to avoid rotor damage. A low-cost 10 µL syringe, with fixed needle and replaceable plunger, is available for all valves.

SGE Gastight Luer Lock SyringesThe Gastight (GT) range of gas- and liquid-tight syringes has all the excellent features necessary to perform exacting tasks in GC, HPLC, and other applications, particularly where inertness and accuracy are of paramount importance. Replaceable plungers are fitted with PTFE tips which have been machined to provide a precision fit into the glass barrel.

Syringe capacities from 1 to 100 mL also have PTFE coated plunger stems. In addition, 1 to 100 mL syringes can be purchased with a PTFE center male Luer to accept Luer Lock needles. Luer Lock needles are not provided and must be ordered separately. Needles are provided in packages (see below).

This durable and accurate syringe configuration is very popular. Tapered needle syringes offer the strength of 23 gauge (0.63 mm) OD on the upper portion of the needle, while the 26 gauge (0.47 mm) lower portion allows the syringe to be used for on-column injection into 0.53 mm ID capillary columns as well as split/splitless, direct and packed injection.

The A-2 features a push-button valve, which allows sample storage up to 250 psi in syringes as small as 25 µL. This is useful with small liquid samples containing low-boiling components that would be lost through evaporation using ordinary syringes.

The positive rear stop (in 100 µL and larger sizes) prevents plunger blowout at elevated pressures, protecting against sample loss or operator injury. Like the Series A gas syringe, the A-2 has all the standard Pressure-Lok features such as a PTFE plunger tip, PTFE-sealed needle and ultra-smooth bore. Replacement components are available for easy repair.
