Thank you to everyone who attended the Tree of Remembrance Ceremony on Wednesday, December 4th. Over 75 residents, staff and community members were welcomed by John Wenzlau. Soprano, Pattie Graetz performed several numbers during the evening. Kaye Baker delivered a Christmas blessing, while Chaplain Stan Florez spoke on seeing our loved ones again. Millie Oakeson acknowledged the Glencroft residents who had passed this last year as well as those that were honored or memorialized. Pastor Joel Eidsness gave a prayer of thanks and guests enjoyed cocoa and holiday cookies afterwards.

Thank you to all who contributed, as the Tree of Remembrance raised $2,780 ($1820 more than last year) for the Friendship Foundation.

December RecapIf you missed the December 2019 GCA (Glencroft Community Association) Community Meeting, here are a few of the highlights.

Bill Terrill, 2019 GCA President, presented a check for $1,500 to the Glendale Fire Department (Ladder Company 157) and one for the same amount will be sent to the Foothills Division of the Glendale Police as thanks for their assistance throughout the year.

The following nominees were elected to the GCA Administrative Board and elected by voice vote during the December 2nd meeting: President Elect: Floyd Whittaker, Vice President: Parthenia Weaver, Members at Large: Howard Brown and David O’Bert.

Bill Beamon reported the 2019 GCA Employee Christmas Fund was successful in receiving enough contributions to provide a $75 gift card for eligible Glencroft employees. This was accomplished due to the generosity of all the residents and the support of the entire Friendship Foundation Staff. The GCA Administrative Council and YOU – the members of this Community Association – give us impetus to continue this GCA Glencroft Employee Association Fund Drive in 2020.

Resident Name BadgesResident name badges have a new look! The name badges are now done in-house and show the resident’s name and an optional line for something personal (place of birth, occupation, etc.). The badge includes the Glencroft Center for

Modern Aging logo. The added benefit of doing them in-house is the turn-around time was reduced from

2-5 weeks to no more than 1 week and the cost of each badge was reduced by more than 50%!

There is no plan to replace previous name badges, however if a resident would like to change their old badge, they can be purchased by completing a Name Badge Request form and paying the $2 fee at the Villa Concierge. When your new badge is ready, you will be called to pick it up.

Everyday tips to make life easier

Get a GripUse rubberbands around the outside of your drinking glass for a non-slip grip. Use the foam from a hair roller around your eating utensils for a softer grip.

Hang ItCreate easy-to-reach clothes by hanging a clothes hanger on the bar as normal and then hang a second hanger (with clothing) attached to the first hanger.

Catch ItDesignate specific spaces for things that you use on a daily basis. One example, use a bowl on a table for your phone, keys and name badge and place items there when not in use.

If you need an ice pack, mix one part rubbing alcohol with two to three parts of water into a zipper sandwich bag and freeze. The ice pack will stay cooler longer and will mold to your body where you place it.

Refrigerator TipsCut a nonslip pad and put it on a shelf in the refrigerator. Put beverage cartons on the pad. Drinks can be poured by just tilting the carton forward.

Safe SoapPut bar soap in the foot of a nylon stocking (cut one leg off) and tie it to the shower head or shower curtain rod. You will have a non-slippery soap that lathers and won’t fall to the ground.

Night VisionUse glow in the dark tape as a guide at night. Use it around light switches, thermostats and baseboards to help navigate in the dark.

Tape a straw to a clothespin and attach the clothespin to the side of the glass to prevent the straw from moving around the glass.

Reach items in the back of the refrigerator by placing a lazy susan turn-table on top of a shelf and place items on it. Then rotate it to bring what you need to the front.

Sipping Easy

If your remote for the TV is confusing, cover the unnecessary buttons with tape. Label the power button as well as the channel and volume controls.

TV Remote

If your TV remote gets lost easily, place a piece of the hook portion of adhesive backed velcro onto the back of the remote. You can then stick the remote to most upholstry on chairs or couches and it won’t fall to the ground or inbetween the cushions.

Ramona Yoder taught 3rd grade in a small farming community in Ohio at a school where her aunt had retired from teaching. In her aunt’s classroom was an unwanted, upright piano that was painted white with nursery rhyme figures on it. When the Principal asked if anyone wanted it, Ramona said, “Yes, please!”

Ramona lived in a tiny apartment at the time, so she let her church use it in the children’s ministry. Shortly after, she moved for a one year teaching assignment with the Mennonite Church Voluntary Service Unit in Glendale, AZ. She then decided to stay in Arizona and wanted three items left behind in Ohio. Ramona had friends who were moving from Ohio and they offered to bring those items; one was the piano.

The piano made the journey west and Ramona had it tuned. The piano tuner said that it was a player piano in need of repair. Due to the expense, she had the player device removed and the piano tuned. In

1976, when Ramona’s brother moved to Phoenix, they stripped it down to the original wood. It was their first attempt at refinishing furniture. They were very pleased with the results and very grateful it was not ornate. During the 1980’s the player part was rebuilt, reinstalled and enjoyed!

The piano moved nine times since 1973, when Ramona became its owner, until 2013 when she settled in Sun City. That was its last move as it looked like the back was going to fall off and it could not be fixed. At the suggestion of a friend, Ramona explored ideas on Pinterest as to how to repurpose a piano as a way to continue its history in the family.

The piano now lives on as: piano art wall hanging, a headboard with bookshelves, picture frames, and as a display case with the piano keys, her father’s violin and a favorite song. She has some keys remaining that she plans to make a wind chime.

CHRIS VALVERDE / Facilities

Chris Valverde joined the Glencroft staff in November 2019 as the Senior Director of Facilities. In early 2020, Glencroft will be creating an in-house landscaping team, which Chris will also oversee. Chris previously was the Director of Facilities at a specialty surgical hospital in Scottsdale.

Born in Colorado, Chris is a Broncos fan and enjoys foot-ball and fantasy football. He likes to draw and fish for bass. He says that Glencroft’s residents are his favorite part of the job. He enjoys hearing their stories and feels like they are old friends that he is getting reacquainted with. Or that they are like family. Family is important to Chris.

Married to Jessica, they have four sons and two daughters as well as 4 grandchildren, 1-4 years old. Their older four children are in their 20s and live on the East side of town. In 2018 the Valverdes adopted their youngest children, siblings Saphyer (4) and Dominic (2). They are hoping to add another child to their family. They also have three dogs and two cats.

HAVE YOU MET?

Ramona moved to the Casitas in May of 2019. She was attracted by the wholistic approach of healthy aging. She enjoys working out in the Performance Center. She plays piano at a local church on Sunday mornings and for her own enjoyment.

An interesting fact, Ramona attended Hesson College and was in Evan Oswald’s archery class as a student and enjoyed eating Emil Yoder’s delicious cinnamon rolls in the dining hall.
