Members are Sarah Jamison, Carly Robertson, Megan Reding, Shalee Myers, Kennedy Schneider, Madison Moser, Kaylie Schneider and MacKenzi Bender. They qualify for the state track meet in Wichita. The boys team placed 5 th . Straight-line winds of 100 miles-per-hour or more swept through central Greeley County Sunday evening, May 23, damaging farm buildings, grain bins and homes. The winds accompanied a line of thunderstorms that stretched from Texas into Kansas. Damage included a 40,000 bushel grain bin at the Clark Harris farm; grain bin at Mildred Waldren’s farm; a shed at Waive Winter farm; a trailer roof at the home of Frances Graham in Horace; a tree uprooted at Nellie Darnell’s in Horace; Larry and Darwin Hoffman’s barn and grain bins were damaged. Jonathan Miller placed 1 st in the discus at the regional meet. Kellum Schneider won the 800 meters at the Regional meet. He has a chance to repeat as 1A State Champion at the state meet. Clay Robertson placed 6 th in the 1A state golf meet. Seek and Find winners were Cecile Shepherd, Pat Mitchell, Clay Smith and Mattie Brandl. Mary Mae Stewart and Ruben Ibarra celebrated their May birthdays at the senior center. The summer city crew are working on drainage along Greeley Avenue. Greeley County received needed rains that were heavy enough for youth to go tubing through the orchard park. It has been a long time since Greeley County has received a 2-3” rain. Josh Gooch received a Masters of Business Administration from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina. ++++ 20 YEARS AGO— May 24, 2000 “We are off and running,” stated Tribune agriculture producer, Steve Mangan. He announced that he has filed for the Republican nomination for Kansas State Senator in the northwest Kansas 40th district. The Tribune High School boys qualified for the state track meet in six events. Evan Firner in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Bryce Cavenee in both hurdle races, Kenton Mangan in the long jump and the 4 x 100 relay team of Evan, Bryce, Jay Young, Aaron Myers and alternates Derek Becker and Kenton Mangan. All of them have a chance to win or at least place. Bernice L. Ekhoff, 83, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2000, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, KS. Sky Hoffman graduated with honors from Dodge City Community College Saturday, May 13, 2000, with an Associate of Arts Degree. Family members attending were Larry and Debby Hoffman, Christy and Candi; Alfred (Matt) Matthaei; Darwin and Barbara Hoffman; Karma and Hunter Hill. Elizabeth Mary Younger, daughter of Kathy Younger, of Tribune, was among the more than 4,000 candidates who were named for degrees at the University of Kansas this spring by the KU’s Registrar’s Office. Younger will receive her BGS in Microbiology. ++++ 30 YEARS AGO— May 24, 1990 Thirteen Greeley County High School seniors received their diplomas at the baccalaureate and commencement program held Sunday evening, May 20, in the high school auditorium. The salutatory address was given by Adrian (A.J.) Crotinger. Valedictorian Paul Fisher said he had been well pleased with the teachers in Tribune. Those graduating were Jon Brunswig, A.J. Crotinger, Paul Fisher, Corrie Howell, Joe Ibarra, Becky Kingsley, Bob Krayca, Kit Randel, Jena Robertson, Jeremie Sebastian, Jana Sheckler, Tammy Wilcox and Doug Woods. Dwight Gooch presented Rose Nemechek with a present during her retirement party at Gooch’s Jack & Jill on Friday, May 18. Scot Robertson, son of Hank and Alice Robertson, and son-in-law of Dolores Mangan, was a member of the 1990 graduating class of K- State University with a B.S. in animal science. Scot and Lisa Robertson are moving back to Tribune, where Scot will be engaged in farming operations with his father, Lisa has employment at Ox Town Cattle Feeders, Inc. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Vogt announce the arrival of their daughter, Desiree Elizabeth, who was born May 15, 1990, at Greeley County Hospital. She weighed 8lbs. 15 oz. and was 21” long. Sunday dinner guests of Karen and Eric Morrison and Dean and Marj Hornbaker were from Colby, KS, Grandpa Jim and Grandma Karen Morrison, Uncle Jeff and Aunt Rachelle Morrison, Uncle Scot Morrison and Aunt Lisa Morrison. The occasion was to celebrate the 4th birthday of Eric on May 20, 1990. ++++ 40 YEARS AGO— May 22, 1980 Donna Gooch came home Tuesday from Lawrence. She will spend most of the summer in Tribune where she will again serve as manager of the Greeley County swimming pool. Three quarters of Greeley County land sold at public auction Monday afternoon for what some believe is a record price, $615.00 an acre or a total of $295,200. Mr. and Mrs. Terry Graham are the proud parents of a baby girl born May 16, 1980, at Greeley County Hospital. She has been named Sara Diane. The new cheerleaders for 1980-81 were chosen Tuesday. They are as follows: Varsity football - Lauri Avery, Angela Firner, Karma Hoffman, Jacqui Larsen, and Connie Young; varsity basketball - Lauri Avery, Angela Firner, Lisa Mangan, Kim White, and Connie Young; volleyball/wrestling - Kerry Arnold, Sara Govert, and Kass Kuttler; junior varsity - Sloan Ballinger, Tammy Lobmeyer, Marsha Miller, and Stacia Steele; junior high - Meredith Cavenee, Jeri Colletti, Michella DuPree, and Lisa Young. Tribune boys won fifth in Class 2A regional track and field meet held at Meade Saturday with 52 1/2 points, and qualified four boys for the state meet to be held in Wichita. At a Y-Teen assembly held May 14 at the Greeley County High School, Cheryl Mishler received a Y-teen of the Year award. She was chosen for the honor as the member having done the most for the organization during the year. ++++ 50 YEARS AGO— May 21, 1970 Forty-one Greeley County High School seniors will be graduated at commencement exercises to be held May 22. Dr. James McMechan, associate professor of chemistry at Fort Hays State College, will give the commencement address on the subject, “Will You See the Year 2001?” Robert John has been named valedictorian of the 1970 Greeley Co. High School graduating class. Scot Pringle will be the salutatorian of the 1970 class. Jay Smith, son of Oma Smith of Tribune, had the misfortune of losing his right leg Monday in a grain auger accident at the Big Tex feedlot at Hereford, TX, where he is employed. The preliminary population figure for Greeley County was 1860, Dist. Manager Paul Warner, who supervised the taking of the 1970 census of population and housing in this area announced. The 1960 figure for the county was 2,087. At a court of honor to be held Monday evening, May 25, Steven Werner, son of Dr. and Mrs. Willard Werner, will receive his Eagle Scout award. Ginger Neuschwander was installed as president of the Y-Teens and Mrs, Paul Woolfolk as president of the YWCA at a joint installation service. Mrs. John Millirons received bruises and her son Jerry had a cut on his head and a dislocated shoulder, the result of a car accident May 8, 16 miles east of Hugo, Colo. ++++ 80 YEARS AGO— May 23, 1940 Keith Winchester took first in the mile run and Floyd Byerly tied for second in pole vault in the state high school track meet held Saturday in Emporia, to give Greeley County High School fourth place in Class B. Mrs. Elizabeth M. Reid, 75, died Sunday afternoon at her home in Tribune. She had not been seriously ill long. The program is nearly completed covering the three days of splendid entertainment and public gathering. The first public school organized in Greeley County was organized at Horace, Kansas, Oct. 15, 1886 with S. Terry, Treasurer; Fred Flory, Director; E.W. Buyle, Clerk. This district at that time comprised fifteen sections. The same year, Nov. 2, 1886 the Tribune district was organized. Annex Barber Parlor— Hot and cold shower baths. J.C. Graves, Prop. Fishman block, Tribune, Kansas. 21-Jan., 1932-Jones Service Station to Bishop and Stites. W.H. Jones, who has conducted the Jones service station and cabin camps on south Broadway, sold his business to George Bishop and George Stites. Mr. Bishop operated the John Deere implement business adjoining the service station on the south. Our Honored Soldier Boys. Our Magnificent high school is to stand as a monument to the memory of our honored soldier boys who went forth to battle in the Spanish- American and World War. A Lions club has been organized for Tribune. 28-Jan., 1932-A.E. Bjork is building a first class service shop in the rear of the Anderson Motor Co. garage. He has a welding, blacksmith shop and disc roller. 04-Feb., 1932-Bishop and Stites to be Standard Oil dealers. 11-Feb., 1932-To Share in Reward. Garden City, Kansas—Twenty persons residing in six states will share the $14,000 reward offered for the capture of the Fleagle bank bandit gang, all of whom met death by hanging or by officers’ bullets. Sheriff L.E. Alderman of Lamar; Lee Richardson and R.S. Terwilliger, Garden City, Kansas officers, each will receive $2,033.33. These are the largest individual rewards. Wheat 34 cents per bushel. Top hogs $3.40 each. 25-Feb., 1932-The ceiling plaster fell off the Register of Deeds office recently. The commissioners hired Frank Woods to repair the damage. Civic problems were discussed by Lions club. Public rest room badly needed for out of town visitors.
