The demand for computing skills and knowledge is growing. Thenumbers of careers relying on computing skills will grow significantlyThe more digitally skilled a UK job is, the higher its annual salary.Digital workers are also more productive, on average, by £10,000 perworker.Issues of social mobility do not exist in the same way. A youngperson from a less advantaged background will find a career pathmore open to them in the digital sector than in some of the longerestablished professions such as medicine, law or accountancy.
Why is Computer Science important to our economy?
But the challenge in the classroom is significantMost GCSE Computer Science is taught by a non-specialist. 75% of existing teachers do not have an academic background in thesubject (vs 25% of science teachers). This is why our subject knowledgeCPD is so important! Not enough schools offer GCSE Computer Science. It is only available in52% of UK secondary schools - only 11% of students choose to takeGCSE Computer Science and girls are outnumbered by 4:1Teacher Professional Development hasn't been a priority: until now!
