Dear Friends,

But as it is written: “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.” I Corinthians 2:9 This is the year for the supernatural. God is going to do miraculous things in our congregation, and in your lives! I urge you to prepare your heart, mind and soul now for the overfl ow.

During 2013, we worshiped and celebrated our Redeemer through services, fellowships and other activities that allowed us to both grow spiritually and be the presence of Christ in our neighborhoods. But God wants to do more. He wants to take you higher. I admonish you to stay faithful. Don’t be weary in your well doing. Fast and pray as never before. God has invested so much in you, giving you gifts and talents that will prove valuable to the building of His kingdom. He has given me for this year, the theme: “Occupy Till I Come” (Luke 19:13). All that He has given you, invest it in the ministry. The return on your investment will be eternal life.

As we reminisce on 2013, we have countless examples of God’s faithfulness and love. It gives me great pleasure to share with you some of the highlights in this, our fi fth edition of Possibilities Magazine. As you read this year’s articles and refl ect back on God’s grace and mercy, I pray that you will fi nd renewed hope; and know that no matter what you may be going through, There is a Greater Deliverance For You!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! As we approached the entrance of Greater Deliverance-

Byram, the Holy Ghost was sure to be felt. Sister Valeria Wright shouted, “Praise your name JESUS! He is worthy of every praise. Every praise is to our God! Th e spirit of the Lord is in this place. It just won’t let me be still.” Th e expediter told the congregation that she was “trying to act right” but when she thought of Jesus and alllllllllllllllllllllll that He’s done, her soul cries out “hallelujah, thank God for saving me.” As Elder Littleton said, “let the Lord have His way” the anointing spread throughout the building.

Not that our natural bodies could withstand more spiritual heat, Minister Porter Ross led us in prayer asking God to pour out His anointing that breaks every yoke, that sets the captives free, that makes whole the affl icted, and that delivers the sin sick soul from sin. We barely made it through the scripture, (Psalms 133; Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; 3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore) which was led by Sister LaTina Gray and the welcome/occasion which was led by Sister Tracy Bates before the doors of heaven opened and the Holy Ghost took control again. Th e praise team managed to sing Lord You are Awesome. If it wasn’t for His love, if it wasn’t for His grace, we don’t know where we would be without You.

Elder Scharvin Grizzell, the guest speaker, proclaimed that he was going to give God what He deserved. He

announced that he was going higher and higher with every round. Realizing that most of the saints had been in services earlier that morning, he told the congregants that God is worthy of every hallelujah and that God is worthy of every praise. He encouraged the saints to continue to walk in the light because God is still calling for holiness and that He was returning for a church without spot and without blemish. Seek the Lord while He may be found. Call upon His name while He is near. We should remain faithful to God. He is always faithful to us. Whatever we need from God, it is ours for the asking. Th e scripture tells us that He won’t withhold any good thing from those who love Him. Elder Grizzell, pastor of Alabaster COGIC, shouted that something down on the inside keeps telling him to go ahead, go ahead, go ahead because God specializes and He will do what no other power can do.

If you didn’t know his struggles and hardships,

neither his countenance, speech nor deeds would give them away. Each time you see Randy Barnes, he always has a smile. Ask him how he is doing, and his reply is always the same, a vivacious “Fantastic.” Listen closely during any Sunday service, and the words “Thank you Jesus”

and “Preach Pastor” flow from his soul. But there is a story behind his praise. From losing a loved one, to losing his job, many have been his afflictions. But his trials have birthed a testimony that Jesus never fails. God is a deliverer and a rewarder who gives double for your trouble.

For his continued faithfulness, Randy was named a Mississippi Southern First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ “COGIC Hero”. He was presented the Jeremiah Award by Jurisdictional Prelate, Bishop Hollis Musgrove on July 16 during the State’s 2013 Annual Holy Convocation. The award is given to a person who exemplifies the fruit of the spirit; serves as a witness for

Christ; outwardly demonstrates a genuine love for the Lord; adheres to the teaching of holiness; and propels the Gospel of Jesus Christ while laboring unselfishly in his church, despite his own crisis and hardships.

A day prior to being named a “COGIC Hero,” Randy successfully completed the Jurisdictional Adjutancy Academy and was awarded his Certificate of Completion by Jurisdictional Chief Adjutant Superintendent Richard Lee.

The favor of God began to overtake Randy several months earlier. In March he was named “Head Usher” by Jurisdictional Usher Board President, Juanita Williams. He was also accepted as a member of the International COGIC Usher Board during the first of July while attending the Auxiliary In Ministries (AIM) Convention in Baltimore, MD.

“I am both humbled and grateful,” Randy said of his promotions, appointments and awards. “I thank God that I am able to be a blessing, and I enjoy helping others. It is my passion. To God be the Glory for all He has done! I know the best is yet to come.”

Randy is a member of Greater Deliverance-Byram, where he serves as President of the Usher Board.

Months of preparing all came down to one night, May

25, 2013. Four young ladies and their escorts took to the runway for a fundraising pageant in support of our church’s July trip to our International Auxiliaries in Ministry (AIM) Convention in Baltimore, Maryland.

Th ey were competing for two awards, “Th e People’s Choice” and “Miss GDC”. Each contestant modeled two outfi ts, evening wear and an outfi t of choice that expressed their individual personalities. Th e adorable Karleigh Robinson was able to captivate the audience to win “Th e People’s Choice Award.”

Th e contestant that raised the most money, along with her escort, was crowned Mr. and Miss GDC 2013 representing both the Byram and Forest locations. Congratulations to this year’s winners, Yasmeen Lefl ore and Aaron Johnson, Jr.

Th is year’s Miss GDC enjoys caring for others and wants to be a doctor. Yasmeen Lefl ore is a 7th grader at Highland Oaks Middle School in Memphis, Tennessee where she plays clarinet in the band. She loves scary movies, talking and running track. Yasmeen is the daughter of Rechell Lefl ore and the niece of Randy and Iris Barnes. She was escorted by her cousin, Aaron Johnson, Jr.

First RunnerUpA fun loving one year old, Lyndon Brown is a big fan of the Backyardigans and Elmo. She likes mac and cheese, hamburger helper and fried chicken. Th e youngest of three, she enjoys playing with her two big brothers, being pushed on her swing set and dancing her days away. Lyndon lives in Forest and is the daughter of Jamal and Yulanda Brown. She was escorted by her mother. As First Runner-up, Lyndon also served as Little Miss GDC-Forest and escorted Pastor and First Lady Littleton in the 2013 GDC-Forest Appreciation program.

Chelsea Campbell was elected to serve on the Church of God in Christ International Youth Department’s fourth

International Youth Advisory Council (IYAC) on July 4, 2013, at the Auxiliaries in Ministry Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. Th e young people serving on this council play an instrumental role in the youth department. During their 4-year term, their task is to serve as the “voice of the youth” in a very literal way. While the International Youth Department (IYD) implements the exciting vision of the newly appointed leader, Dr. Benjamin Stephens, the young people of IYAC will assist in executing the departmental mission as well as provide input on IYD programs.

Chelsea is an active member of Greater Deliverance Church of God in Christ - Forest where she serves under the leadership of Pastor Daniel Littleton and Lady Wanda Littleton. She is a member of the youth choir, youth praise team, sanctuary choir, Young People Willing Workers, and liturgical praise dancers. She was an honor graduate of Forest High School and is currently a sophomore at East Central Community College where she serves as a Residence Advisor. Chelsea is also a former Vice President of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

She feels that many young people do not participate in youth programs because they feel their voices won’t be heard or will not make a diff erence. Taking the time to listen to the youth is where we need to start. She believes simply taking the time to listen to our youth will help change their attitudes. She is very excited and looking forward to serving her church and community as part of this endeavor.

The first ever Citywide Youth Explosion was

held at Greater Deliverance Forest June 26-28, 2013. Youth from far and near came together for worship and fellowship. Each day opened with workshops and closed with the Word of God brought by several speakers.

“Minding Your Business” presented by Erika M. McMillion, a young entrepreneur, provided valuable financial information and steps to take to open one’s business. With young people leaving for college and pursuing careers the workshop was more than helpful!

Minister Alfonzo Wilson’s session on Thursday was simply “Real Talk”. He shared his testimony and gave the youth insight on a world that many have and will only see on television. He admonished the youth about the dangers of gangs, drugs and precarious lifestyles while also sharing how he overcame it all but only by the grace and help of God almighty.

On Friday, the final workshop of the explosion took place with Sister Doris Powell titled, “It Ain’t Sexy”. The youth were enlightened on fashion, such as, what’s hot and what’s not. She shared how different attire can attract different attention and demonstrated how being young and dressing modest can be attractive.

Minister Jerod Ross brought the Word on Wednesday. On Thursday, Elder Lavonne Willingham’s message was entitled, “I’m Going to Win, I Got to Make It.” He stressed that we all have a race to run and it is up to each of us to cross the finish line. Minister Marquis Powell gave the culminating message on Friday night and demonstrated to the youth in a unique way how easy it is to be misled by Satan. The climax of the explosion was a concert by season five Sunday Best participant, Ashford Sanders on Friday.

As we move forward into the New Year, our team at GDC is expecting God to

do great things in our Youth Department. Our vision is to: love, support, encourage and empower the youth, so that every young person will be strengthened as they grow in the knowledge of God.

The youth leaders are strongly convinced that ministering the Word of God is

essential for the souls of our youth. We are also working diligently to let the youth know that they are not forsaken or segregated from the church. We need the youth to help build up the kingdom of God (Mark 10:14-16). Let’s go Team Youth! We are winning souls for Christ through learning the bible, activities, singing, praying, arts and crafts, bible drills, building self esteem and spreading the word about GDC Youth Church! On Saturday, June 8th, Greater Deliverance- Forest held its 2nd annual Youth Pack the House Rally. The rally allowed young people to

realize that they are not too young to live for Christ. This was an awesome worship experience because God used the youth in a mighty way. Brother Devin Kimble of GDC Forest began with inspirational words that were very uplifting and Youth Minister Willie James Mosley from Brandon, Mississippi encouraged everyone that you are “Not too Young to be an Example!” Other participants on the program included Pilgrim Rest’s Mime Team, T.H.U.G.S. (True Heroes Under God) Step Team, Children of Christ singers, and Minister Matthew Donaldson & Friends. During the rally, over 15 young people gave their lives to Christ! As youth taking a stand for God, we are already looking forward to next year’s rally.

As I would go about my daily work as a

store manager, I began to gain a noticeable amount of weight. I could not eat an entire kid’s meal in one setting, so I couldn’t understand where the weight was coming from. My mother suggested that I take laxatives and later fl uid pills, but my stomach continued growing. My mother would also anoint me with blessed oil and pray for me; and it always helped me to go a little further.

As time went by, sleeping became more and more uncomfortable. I would have to sleep in an upright position. Later, I got to a point where I couldn’t even stoop down to the fl oor, or tie my shoes; my feet were constantly swollen. Every Sunday that I was blessed to be in church service, I would often go up for prayer. Although I would feel better spiritually and mentally, the weight kept coming. My sister, being a registered nurse, stressed that I should go to the emergency room. After I prayed and built up my nerves to go, I went, and they did x-rays; Th ey said nothing was wrong, and they tried to send me home. I refused to leave without

an answer and requested a CT Scan (CAT scan). A few hours later, I was informed that I had a mass on my left ovary. I initially didn’t know what to think. All I knew to do was pray and keep going.

I was sent to a specialist at a diff erent hospital who could tell me more about what was going on and what I needed to do. He came in the room, introduced himself, and then immediately excused himself. After returning, he gave me some information I didn’t want to hear. I had to have surgery ASAP to have the mass removed. I had never been this nervous or worried about anything in my life.

On November 19, 2012, I was to be admitted to the hospital for surgery. What was supposed to be an hour procedure turned into three hours. After waking up, the doctors informed me that they had to remove more than they had expected. Th ey also said that I had the surgery just in time, because the mass was border-line cancer. Th e weight I gained was 54 lbs of fl uid from what was growing inside of me. But through faith and prayer, God brought me out. Th ank God for a praying pastor and church family.

I thank God that a year later, I am healthy and have no signs of this condition returning. “I am a living testimony; and I thank the Lord that I’m still alive!”

Psalm 23:4 says, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of

death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” Th is scripture is so dear to me. I’m not alone. He has not abandoned me. I have nothing to fear. He will comfort me through this valley.

Th rough my Journey, I thank God for: my husband Charles, who loved me in my sickness and in health; my sons, Charleston and Clayton; my parents; my lovely nine sisters; precious brother; nieces, brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; Elder Daniel & First Lady Wanda Littleton; Greater Deliverance Church Family; and Madison Post Offi ce co-workers.

My Journey started on March 9, 2012. I went for my scheduled yearly mammogram. Four days later, I received a call from my doctor saying that I needed to have further screening. So, I went and had a biopsy done. When the results came back, he told me, “You have Invasive Stage 4 Breast Cancer.” He said, “I will refer you to one of the best oncologists. If need be, I would refer my wife to him”. Th at was a relief; however, at that point my mind was going in all directions. I was too stunned to scream or cry or ask, “why me?”

For Christmas 2011, Charles, Charleston and Clayton gave me a Kitchen Aide. When I opened it, surprisingly it was pink. Even back then, I honestly thought to myself, why pink? One night at the dinner table, Clayton asked me, “Mom did we jinx you by buying a pink mixer?” He said it was the only one that

instantly donated $50.00 to breast cancer research. He said, “We knew that you would have wanted us to help somebody.” I replied, “No son, this was no jinx. God has ordered my steps and knew the Journey that I was going to be on. Our lives are already predestined, ordained, and ordered by God from the beginning. He knows me. Hallelujah!

It took at least a week before it all to sink in, “cancer”. Th e word itself was surreal. Surely there was some huge mistake. Cancer happened to other people. I eat right and try to take care of my body. I walked

around in a daze from one doctor’s appointment

to another and from one test to another. On March 26, 2012, I had an appointment with my oncologist at 2:15 p.m. Th at was so hard for me. I prayed, “Lord, I

know you have control, but if it’s your will, heal my body!” We closed the offi ce that day; everybody was gone home when we left the offi ce at 6:15 p.m.

Th ank you Lord! After getting the initial diagnosis from my doctor, my faith went to the next level. God took the burden of my cancer on himself. He took away every worry, every fear, everything that weighed me down. He off ered me rest, a peace found only in a personal relationship with Christ, a peace not of this world (John 14:27).

I had to have 4 treatments of chemotherapy, once every three weeks. Fear crept in again. My chemo oncologist told me that my hair would start falling out two weeks after my fi rst treatment. I’m embarrassed to admit that my hair was the very fi rst thought that came to mind when I heard the word “chemotherapy.” It wasn’t, “Oh dear God, I could lose my life!” It wasn’t even, “Oh dear God, I could lose my breast!” It was, “Oh, please God, not

my hair!” I found so much comfort in reading Matthew 10:29-31. God knows the number of hairs on my head and he restored every single one. He knows me! Hallelujah!

My chemo oncologist told me that weight loss and poor appetite was a couple of the side eff ects of chemotherapy. God is so awesome, my appetite was not poor and I gained 17 pounds during treatment. Th at was another assurance that God was carrying me through. He knows me.

During the weeks of chemotherapy, I had so much support, love and prayers wrapped around me. My mom and sisters were heaven sent. One of my most heart touching visits was from my Dad and brother. Th ey came and brought a sweet potato pie. My Dad said, “I know you can’t eat it, but the boys can enjoy it. As you know, sweets and chemo don’t mix well.”

My family was there to lighten the load for my husband. Th ey took turns making my doctor’s appointments, preparing meals, cleaning, grocery shopping, praying, encouraging us--helping to keep a sense of normalcy for my boys. I thank

God for them and the understanding between my husband and my family.

On June 28, 2012, another test of faith came. My mother-in law, Christine Littleton had a stroke and became terminally ill. Th is was a very stressful time for my husband, having to cope with the illness of two special women in his life. With my husband’s permission, my sisters supported even more. My sisters said, “Charles we just want to take care of your wife so you can have the strength and time to help take care of your mom.” My husband was very strong. He often said, “God will not put more on you than you can bare.” On August 2, 2012, I had surgery. Th is was the Phase II of my Journey. I was so at peace and so ready to go to surgery. I had prayed to God the night before and he had shown me the bright light. Elder Littleton came to have prayer before I went to surgery. My family and co-workers were there also. Surgery was 4 hours. When I came from under sedation, I saw the white lab coats standing beside my bed, Dr. Ley & Dr. Runnels. Dr. Ley said, “I have the best news ever. Your lymph nodes were all negative. Tears of joy came fl owing down, thank you Lord. He knows me. Hallelujah!

I went home to recover from surgery. I truly needed lots of help, and my sister teams were there to support. Charleston and Clayton helped me in and out of bed. My schedule for weeks was from one doctor’s appointment to another. I was in the process of my reconstruction. Th at took several months. God always preceded my visits, and I got good reports. He knows me. Hallelujah!

December 4, 2013 was my last surgery. Th is was Phase III of my Journey! God is so awesome. Family and sister teams were still taking care of us. I was blessed with lots of prayers, support, encouragement, love and patience shown to me during my illness.

My Journey with breast cancer has forced me to depend on God. It humbled me and kept my pride in check. It tested my faith and allowed God to show his power (2 Corinthians 4:7). It forced my thoughts on eternal things and taught me just how brief this life on earth really is. My Journey has pruned me to be a vessel to be used by God. I know Him!

When you look at me you are looking at a miracle. I can truly say that I have been blessed, and yes, I have a testimony.

I have lived the majority of my life in the world pleasing self and not thinking about where I would spend eternity. I knew of God but didn’t know God as my personal savior. In 2000, I met the love of my life, Lori Ann She made it clear that in order for me to be a part of her life I had to have the Lord in mine. After joining New Friendship MB in Forest, MS we received pre-marital counseling, and on November 24, 2001, we were married.

Despite the many challenges that I was facing, I began to really seek God as my Savior by studying His Word. On December 24, 2011 we were led to join Greater Deliverance COGIC, and I started to experience God’s power and taste of his sweet wonders. Th e church’s motto was “We Are Family”. We gained a spiritual family and were able to grow, share, and learn more of God. We were beginning to witness what we had heard others speak of, not knowing that this was just the beginning of my

journey of faith.

As time passed my health began to fail, but I kept the faith and trusted God. On one occurrence my blood pressure was 240/140. I kept saying that I was fi ne, but my wife fi nally convinced me that I needed to go to the doctor. When I arrived at the doctor’s offi ce, he told my wife that if I had waited thirty (30) minutes longer, I would have died.

Still trusting and leaning on God for strength, in August of 2011, I suff ered a stroke on both sides of my brain. In the midst of my illness, a year later, I had to bury my sister, Rose Mary Ealy. In June of 2012, I had to bury my oldest son, Troy D. Ealy. Hallelujah! But look at me now. Th rough it all, I kept saying, “By God’s grace I am healed. By His grace I will get through this.”

By His grace and healing power, the prayers of the Saints, the care and love from my wife, I can say that my body is now functioning at 85%. I still have a ways to go, but with God I am a conqueror and I will get through this. While yet remaining on this battlefi eld, my faith has increased, and I thank God for saving my life.

I thank God for all of the many blessings he has bestowed

on me. Realizing that I can’t tell them all, I will share with you how God dealt with me and blessed me through cancer for the second time in November 2011.

Who would ever think of a man having breast cancer, a cancer that most people thought (including me) was mostly associated with women? Over the years I never felt any pain, but I noticed my left breast was a little larger than my right, and there was a lump there. My wife advised me to get it checked. After making an appointment with my doctor, I went to the V.A. Medical Center for examinations and ex-rays. My doctors told me it could be one or the other, a mass or possible cancer. To make the proper diagnosis he scheduled me for a mammogram at the Methodist Medical Center. Th at’s when I panicked. Sure enough, after the mammogram I received a diagnosis of stage two cancer with a mass the size of a golf ball. Was I afraid? Sure, devastated! I never thought of having breast cancer.

My greatest problem was deciding how to tell the children. Realizing I have a praying wife, I had her tell all of them. She has a way of making everything seem not so bad. She knows what to say, how to say it, and when to say it. God gave her that. I thank God for allowing me to listen and understand. We wanted the girls to be told at the same time. Stephanie had a teacher’s meeting and Stacy was in the process of doing a customer’s hair. After making contact with Stephanie, my wife asked her to call Stacy and place her on speaker phone, and she gave them the news. When we returned home that day, the news was shared with the other children. Th rough it all, I saw God’s grace. My wife prayed constantly; prayer and believing was the key for me. My surgery was scheduled for December 12, 2011 at 6:00 a.m., a Monday morning. Th e Sunday before my surgery, Elder Littleton was exalting God and praying for those on the altar. Too many times one will go to the altar for prayer and nothing happens. Nothing happens because they really don’t believe anything is going to happen. On this particular Sunday, as Elder Littleton

prayed, the anointing of God fi lled the Church. All of a sudden, I heard my wife’s voice praising and thanking God. Th e closer she came to me, the better I felt inside. God had stirred her to come and lay hands on me because of my fear. My eyes remained closed, and I began to praise God with all my might. As my wife praised and thanked God, she placed her hand on my chest. After that, I had no more fear concerning the surgery. I was ready. God let me know everything was going to be alright. I experienced a joy and happiness, that I’d never felt before. In a matter of seconds, Elder Littleton placed his hand over the left side of my chest and prayed for me. To me, it was confi rmation from God that I could believe and trust him. When the anointing fi lled the house of the Lord on that Sunday, it opened a door of healing and deliverance for me. I realize that it wasn’t for me alone, but I was one of those that God blessed that day.

On Monday, the day of surgery, I underwent a mastectomy (the removal of my left breast). My Doctor informed my family that of 30 lymph nodes, only 2 were cancerous, and they were also removed. God blessed me to go home the next day and go back to work.

I had to have ten chemotherapy treatments. After the second treatment, I asked the doctor if I could do whatever I felt like doing, he said, “Yes, but you can’t play golf.” Later, with the doctor’s permission, God strengthened me to play nine holes of golf without pain or tiredness. However, the fourth day after every treatment, the chemotherapy aff ected my joints to the point that I could hardly walk, and my entire body ached. I even noticed the fourth day was always on Sunday, but the thought of staying home from church never entered my mind. God had not brought me this far to leave me now. My faith and trust in him had increased.

After completing all of my chemotherapy treatments, I immediately started thirty-three radiation treatments, fi ve days a week for six weeks. Th e Lord never allowed me to experience any pain, sickness, or discomfort during these treatments. I’m thankful for my wife being there not only for me, but for others. A nurse’s mother was sick and had passed away. She requested prayer from my wife while we were in the examining room. I could tell she was comforted after my wife prayed. At the end of my radiation treatments, my doctor was amazed at my strength and how the Lord had blessed me to go through. I know it was prayer and the power of God. Th rough it all, I saw God’s Grace!

Greetings! My brothers and sisters, in the Lord. My

anthem is one of the Williams Brothers songs, that says, “I’ve been through the fi re, but I am still strong. Th e enemy tried to tear me down, but I’m still holding on. Because it’s something on the inside telling me to hold on.”

Th e last few years have been long and trying for me. I was diagnosed with heart problems that required major surgery, surgery I did not want to have before realizing just how detrimental my condition was. I kept telling my husband something was wrong because I had to literally fi ght every day to stay alive. So, we went to the doctor, and I was diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia, a leakage in a heart valve and CHF (congestive heart failure) which would require surgery.

So here I am a child of the King, a teacher of the Word, but couldn’t fi nd a Word for myself. A motivator, stimulator, woman of God, the one that had to keep it together so others wouldn’t fall apart, but, here I am, the one that speaks healing to others, now wounded and bleeding myself. I was suff ering, and I really wanted to just give up. I couldn’t fi ght anymore to stay alive for everyone else. I wanted to fall apart for me. I wanted to be weak for me. I needed a crying break, but I kept my feelings hid for the most part, because I am an introvert; I channel things inward.

I was told on every doctor’s visit to get the surgery done because I was taking too high of a dosage of heart meds just to maintain my heart rate to a somewhat normal, but I said, “No, give me the meds.” My husband begged me. He said, “I’m tired of being scared.” My loved ones pleaded with me. My doctor told me, “Your heart is going to stop. It’s getting weaker and weaker and showing signs of CHF at this time.” But I said, “I only have one heart.”

I read the doctors report; I heard what they said, but I still was not ready. I did not have peace about it for myself. Everyone was telling me what they wanted, but did not ask me what I wanted. So, fi nally after having several blackout spells and a heart rate going from 70-180 in seconds, ambulance rides, and ER visits, it was no longer “will you”, but “you will.” We went

to 3 cardiac surgeons until we found one that my husband and I felt comfortable with and that didn’t want to crack my chest open. Many people stated he was one of the best, “If

he can’t get it done, then it just can’t be done.” He understood my frustration and my reservations concerning surgery. He was candid with me as I was with him. He put my reservations to rest.

During this time, I was asked the question “Is it possible to have fear and faith?” My reply was ”No.” Looking back on everything now, I don’t think it had anything to do with either of the two. I think it was more about the reality of the situation than fear or faith or the lack thereof. Don’t get me wrong, I was petrifi ed; make no mistake about it. Who wouldn’t be? So, here I am at the hospital in admissions; my family there from Alabama along with my pastor, Elder Littleton. I’m really going to do this, and I did. I went through surgery.

Before and after the surgery, I went through the 5 stages of grief: denial/isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. With the exception of depression, acceptance was the hardest to overcome. At one point I had concluded that I did not have to wake up from those blackouts or my surgery, but I did. I came to realize

that the devil can’t kill what God has anointed to live. He’s not through with me yet. Against all odds I….am….still….here….! Glory to God!

Someone once told me, “God will make your misery your ministry.” Th e devil didn’t know he was helping me to grow up without giving up because I chose to be better and not bitter. I was off work for almost 2 years, but the Lord made a little go a long way. My friends, doctor, and family wanted me to go on disability. I said, “No! I’m not disabled.” I knew I couldn’t do the work I used to do as a nurse, but God blessed me with a job that I did not have to look for. I now work in a Christian environment where prayer is held every day, and I am able to minister to others. Until this day, I have not fi lled out an application for a job.

God has continued to bless and strengthen me. Not only am I able to work on a job again, but I have also been able to resume service in His vineyard which includes teaching Young Women’s Christian Council, Sunday School, and Bible Band lessons. I will forever give God the praise and the glory for all that he has done for me and for what He continues to do through me!

A century of loving, caring, giving and teaching, Henry Jones has reached a milestone in this journey of life

that many never see. He is a Centenarian. Th e Lord blessed Father Jones, as many aff ectionately call him, to mark 100 years of life on December 10, 2013. To commemorate this joyous event, a celebration was held in his honor on December 11. Family and friends traveled from as far as Niagara Falls, New York to wish him a Happy Birthday.

A member of Greater Deliverance-Forest, Father Jones loves the Lord and raised his children to do likewise. From his seed, the Lord has given the church, Elders, Ministers, Missionaries, teachers, a Superintendent and a family that is devoted to sharing the Good News of the Gospel to all.

For his faithfulness, the Lord has given him reasonable health and strength. At 100-years-old, Father Jones continues to feed and clothe himself, and is still able to move around and go where he wants to. Known as a man who gives without complaining, Father Jones has set an example for all to follow.

A special tribute from his children during his birthday celebration entitled “A Father Like You,” is a testament of the priceless legacy he builds and the love he shows. “Dad, we want you to know you mean the world to us. Only a heart as dear as yours, would give so unselfi shly. Th e many things you’ve done, all the times that you were there, help us to know deep down inside, how much you really care. I was honored by Elder Littleton when he asked me to write this article. This subject came up

over lunch during my visit to Jackson, Mississippi in September of this year. Even the waiter, who was an Anglo Saxon, was extremely intrigued by our conversation about this simple command “Occupy Until I Come” that has been overlooked by the African American church for decades.

It was during this conversation that I somewhat criticized the African American churches for not stepping up to the plate, for not taking care of our community by not following this one simple command that Jesus gives reference to in the parable of the nobleman giving his servants talents in Luke 19: 1 – 28. I asked Elder Littleton to examine why Jesus took business owners with Him on His crusades vs. the deacon, preacher, lazy man and poor men? If you examine the 12 disciples, some of them were fishermen – Andrew, Peter, James and John. Phillip, James and Judas (Thaddaeus) were tradesman of some sort. All of them ran their own business and could hire others. Jesus also selected Judas Iscariot who was the treasurer and thief. Judas was a white collar thief that recognized this great opportunity given to him by Jesus to expand the message of the Kingdom, but he struggled continually with financial insecurity. Matthew was a tax collector and Simon engaged in politics. You probably already know why the deacons, preachers, lazy and poor men were not chosen by Jesus.

Our community is plagued with high unemployment, crime, drugs, sickness and diseases like no other community in America. African American consumption spending is well over $1 trillion; so we are not broke. The African American church in 2002 deposited well over $1.1 billion in banks across America. Yet, as believers we are sitting idly by hoping, jumping, shouting, and praying in tongues while the opportunity to go in and possess the land is passing us by. African American male unemployment is over 26%, and we are waiting on government to solve our problems when we serve the “King of Kings” and the “Lord of Lords.” In this article, my aim is to show you that it is our responsibility to take care of our community and provide for those who are lost.

Often times the church will teach believers that we should not hide our talents. Which is true; and that we should give our services to the church; but, the church also has responsibility to produce a conduit or catalyst for believers to prosper from the talents. Believers get shafted and burnt by the world and other believers because our African American churches don’t own or control the seven kingdoms of the world which are: Government, Finance, Media, Religion, Education, Entertainment and Art.

In Luke 4 Satan tries to negotiate with Jesus by saying this: Luke 4:5-7

ine.Notice, Jesus never said to Satan that he was not telling the truth. Why, because Adam turned the kingdoms that were in his control over to Satan in the garden.

We must now examine the definition of the word “occupy” in Greek and not in English in order to understand the context of this parable in Luke 19:13. Why the Greek meaning vs. English? Jesus didn’t speak English during this period of time and since there are many translations we need to go back to one of the original translations during biblical times. The New Testament is based on the Greek and the Old Testament is based on Hebrew words. Many believers view the word “occupy” in terms of the English meaning which is also listed below.

In this context, the word “occupy” appears only this one time in the entire canon of Scripture. The word in the Greek text is pragmateuomai [prag-mat-yoo’-om-mahee]. Strong’s Dictionary defines this word occupy to mean “to busy oneself with” or to engage in “trade”. Related Greek root words are pragma [prag’-mah] which is defined as a “deed”, an “affair” and by extension a “(material) object”, “business”, “matter”, “thing”, “work”; and pragmateia [prag-mat-i’-ah] which means “transaction”, by extension “negotiation” or “trade”. All three Greek words are the root of our transliterated English word pragmatic, meaning “efficient”, “functional”, “practical”, “realistic”, “reasonable”, “sensible”, “useful”, “utilitarian”.

Webster’s Dictionary defines “occupy” as “to take and hold possession of, as by conquest”. This meaning is often associated with military operations, as in “occupational” forces which hold vanquished territory following a victorious campaign. Since our Savior is the conquering hero who has accomplished the victory for His own nation, it would be reasonable to conclude that there should be an “occupational force” which would both hold the conquered territory as well as transact the business of His Kingdom within that realm. Many of the treasured hymns of the christian church take up the general theme of the church Militant; and even though militancy might be taken to fleshly extremes among some groups, the importance of this force must never be diminished. Only when we are fully submitted to the leadership of the Holy Spirit will we recognize and properly assume our assigned post in His occupational force.

Even if we go with Webster’s definition, ask yourselves are we taking back our communities? Do we have a plan to take or occupy communities that we once grew up in or are we just riding through on a Sunday waving at our friends and family members once a week giving lip service to God.

No matter what definition we examine in this article we have a mandate to do business in our community. If we examine other religious organizations like the Catholic Church, Southern Baptist, Presbyterians, and United Methodists each of our Anglo Saxon churches own and operate universities, schools, hospitals, radio stations and banking institutions.

Recently, I viewed a Bloomberg story about Magic Johnson and Jay-Z both have accomplished a great deal in terms of business as African American business men in our community and both came from humble beginnings. Both of these men are game changers in our community. Now it is our time to move beyond the fear, doubt and speculation. It is our time to truly act like we are Kings and Priest. Now is the time for you to ask yourself “Is there a king in you?” “Are you royalty?” “Are you made in God’s image after His likeness?”

The time is now for us to rise up and walk. To work as a team under the leading of the Holy Spirit and begin to put our people back to work. Ask yourself this, “If we don’t do it then who will?” We are God’s people. God is counting on each of us to do our part. I am so excited about this divine partnership.

The expressions on their faces as the hot plates of food were placed before them

said it all, “grateful.” More than 100 homeless people were served - what was for many of them - their only meal of that day by the women of Greater Deliverance-Byram.

Th e recipients of that meal fl owed into Stewpot Community Services in Downtown Jackson on Saturday, November 23, 2013. It was the fi rst time the GDC-Byram Women’s Ministry volunteered at the center. Th e day of service was spearheaded by Sister Shirley Clark and First Lady Wanda Littleton.

Th e two of them, along with Sisters Marshall Littleton, Linda Morris, Jackie Walker, April Jeff erson and Fran Camper, worked very hard in the kitchen preparing the meal, which was also purchased by the GDC Women’s Ministry. Mother Marrge Smith, Mother Willie Jeff erson, Sisters BB Clark, Iris Barnes, Tracy Bates, Doris Powell and Tammy Lloyd also gave of their time to help prepare the plates and serve, the Women’s Ministry following the word of Jesus Christ in Matthew 25:35 “For I was hungred and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink...”

It was both a blessing and rewarding day to give back to the community. Th e GDC Women’s Ministry endeavors to volunteer to feed the homeless at Stewpot at least three Saturdays of each year, beginning in 2014.

We, the women of GDC, thank God for our leader, Pastor Daniel Littleton, for being a God-fearing man and a man of great vision to serve at this appointed time.

In Matthew 25:35-36, Jesus commissions his followers to have

a heartfelt concern for the needy, the hungry, the naked, the sick, the thirsty and the imprisoned. Being a person of Missions, that ministry is a major part of my life. As I often say, I (we) may not or cannot do for everybody, but I (we) can do for somebody.

We are people who take food and comforts for granted, because it’s an everyday part of our lives. Many times we are blessed and fail to recognize it. Over a period of time God has given me to recognize the needs of people. Even as a child this ministry stood tall within me. As I looked at how blessed we are to have our loved ones gathered together, with our dinner tables completely dressed with turkeys, dressings, and all the Th anksgiving trimmings, I began to realize so many are not as fortunate. Some are not blessed with a Th anksgiving meal, or a basic hot meal, or even the necessities of life as you and I know it.

In ministry, the natural needs must be met before the spiritual can be received. If the physical man or woman is hungry, he or she cannot and will not comprehend the things that are spiritual. When we recognize and focus on the needs of others, we are following God’s directions, and seeing through the eyes of the spirit. Following the voice of the Lord, ministry can be accomplished.

A few years ago at my former church, the Lord enabled me to see needs. With the permission of the pastor, I organized an outreach ministry to be a blessing to the people in the community as well as those in the

church. Th anksgiving Community Outreach was birthed. From yester years to today the needs of people have not changed. Hunger has no color or race neither does it have a religious preference. Th e need for clothing or food remains the same wherever it exists. It’s all the same, city or rural.

Putting love in action is what it’s about and what counts. But would be willing to give of themselves and a few hours of their Th anksgiving holiday to cater to the needy? To pull away from the comforts and the warmth of their homes to see about someone else having a hot dinner, who would be willing? Well, Greater Deliverance Church of God in Christ (Forest) was willing. We catered 120 meals to inner city families and seniors. Th ere was full participation from the saints--donating large quantities of food for the dinner, along with preparing the food, serving and delivering the meals. Th rough this team eff ort, Greater Deliverance allowed the love from within the church walls fl ow out into the community and bless those in need with a Th anksgiving meal. Feeding and meeting a need was our primary focus, along with kingdom building. Just as Jesus extended an invitation to “Come,” so do we.

Th e recipients of the Th anksgiving dinners responded with heartfelt “Th ank You’s” such as: “We needed that”, and “You all are doing a good thing.” It’s a blessing to touch the lives of people and know it’s not about you or me, but about the Lord and His commission. Th is enables us to know that whatever we do for the Lord is worthwhile and He gets the Glory. Praise Him for His greatness. Hallelujah!!!!!!!!

Greater Deliverance Forest and Byram Unite for a Joint New Year CelebrationBy Fran Camper“We Are Better Together” was the theme for 2013 as the saints of Greater Deliverance from Byram and Forest, Mississippi met at the Byram location on January 6th for a joint New Year’s kick-off worship service. For many, the New Year off ers an opportunity to access where you are and identify areas where improvement is needed when making the resolution to do better. Th e guest speaker, Dr. Donald Wheelock, urged the congregation to resolve to try “God’s Path to Better” in 2013.

“If you want a diff erent result, you must take a diff erent approach to the situation,” explained Dr. Wheelock. “Something better awaits God’s people who take a diff erent approach to receive the best He has for you,” he went on to say.

Reading from Joshua 1:1-9, Dr. Wheelock used as his subject, “God’s Path to Better.” He discussed how the era of Moses had ended, and the Israelites were on the verge of a new day. Forty years of suff ering in the wilderness would soon be behind them. God was about to take them to a new place, over the Jordan River, which was symbolic of what was to come. Th ey would dwell in Th e Promise Land!

“We must be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest (Joshua 1:9),” he reminded the congregation. “You must have courage to

deal with your enemies. Be of good courage, commanded the Lord!”

“Th e Lord’s hands are all on it, but the enemy’s hand is all in it. But the Lord your God will lead you through, if you trust and obey him; and not faint. He will make your enemy your footstool. Yet, you must be humble and true to His Holy Word,” he continued.

Greater Deliverance was moved to make a fresh start and follow “God’s Path to Better” in 2013, to stand fast in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel. “We are moving into a new season in 2013,” Dr. Wheelock proclaimed. “Stand still, pray and know that God is who He says He is. Walk by faith and not by sight,” he encouraged. “Th e favor of God is upon your life. Whatever you desire, He has it.”

Dr. Wheelock preached his fi rst sermon at the age of seventeen. His work in the ministry continued, and he has served as a pastor, president of Saints Academy in Lexington, Mississippi, and has provided untiring service to several jurisdictional offi ces under the late Bishop Th eo Davis, Prelate of First Southern Mississippi Jurisdiction. Wheelock has served as adjunct professor at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi and is currently Jackson State University’s coordinator of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). He and his wife, Mother Jacqueline Wheelock, reside in Madison, Mississippi. Th eir work continues in the ministry and they are noted marriage and pre-marital workshop speakers.

This year for our pastor and wife anniversary, we prayed for God to give us a song as usual, but this year we asked God to give us the song that would portray the way we felt about our life and something to encourage our leaders as well.

As we were returning from our girl’s day out, God gave us the song from Tye Tribbett’s new CD entitled “He Turned It”. Jeremiah 31: 13 states, “Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.”

As I listened to the track, I realized that the song exemplified everything that our leaders had been through. This was the song that would encourage them as well as everyone in attendance going through trials.

Preparing to dance to this song required more intense rehearsals than any other performances we had done. Yet, the girls were excited about the dance.

As we always do before any dance, we prayed together and asked God to get the glory out if our performance. On the day of the appreciation service, the song began to play and minister to those in attendance.

He can and will step in on every situation, when we are at our wits end and turn it so that he gets the glory!

Upholding a legacy and vision for the education of our youth, the Littie Clark-Marshall Scholarship Foundation

awarded seven scholarships during its annual scholarship program held April 13, 2013. Scholarship recipients were: Edneshia Evans, Cory Qualls, and Nikki Triplett from Forest High School; and Tamayia Gray, Keshun Th omas, LaQuisha McKee, and Shaquita Hughes from Scott Central High School.

Maggie Roberts Dawson, a native of Scott County, was the speaker for the event. She is a Family Nurse Practitioner with Clark’s Clinic in Morton, Mississippi and the daughter of District Missionary Clinese Roberts, Mississippi Southern First District 9. Mrs. Dawson shared with the graduates her journey to becoming a nurse practitioner. “Doors were often closed along the way, but God opened windows that allowed me to exceed far and beyond my original goal of becoming a nurse,” she said. Th e graduates were urged to fi nish the pursuit of higher education even though there will be obstacles along the way. Th e challenges will serve to

make them stronger. She encouraged them to never give up on their goals and depend on God every step of the way. Chelsea Campbell, a 2012 Littie Clark-Marshall Scholarship recipient, off ered words of encouragement to the graduates. She highlighted the changes that should be expected as a fi rst year college student. Chelsea shared that reporting to class, turning in assignments; managing time, preparing for exams, and obtaining assistance from professors when needed are not optional if one wants to succeed in college. She expressed that college life will be what the student makes it, and instructors

will provide assistance when students put forth eff ort.

Th e scholarship foundation was established in honor of Mother Littie Clark-Marshall in 2002 and has awarded over $16,000 in scholarships since its inception to assist students pursuing higher education. Mother Littie’s vision of youth staying in school and “getting a good education” is shared by her son, Alderman James “Bo” Clark and daughter, Pearl Clark who are avid supporters of the scholarship foundation.

Proverbs 31:30 says, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” With the theme, “Stepping Out of the Box, Embracing Unity,” the fi rst “100 Women in Red” program was held September 1, 2013 at Greater Deliverance COGIC – Forest.

Th e color, red, represents the blood of Jesus. If it were not for His blood, where would we be? Over 150 women were present, most dressed in red. Th e program served not only as a fundraiser for our Pastor and First Lady’s Appreciation, but also focused on bringing hope and promoting a renewed determination in faithfulness, kindness, devotion, and charity toward one another as Our Father in Heaven has shown to us. Th e Word of God says in Acts 2:17, “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all fl esh.” As women of God, we realize that we must walk hand in hand if we are to reach the nations; not allowing jealousy, envy and strife to creep in and destroy the movement of God. Sister Ann Ealy, one of our newest members, did a magnifi cent job as Mistress of Ceremony for the event. Clouds of glory fi lled the sanctuary and the presence of the Lord was manifested during the dynamic singing by the Stingley Sisters, “Is My Living in Vain?” Th e speaker, First Lady Tonya Jones of Greater Holy Hill Church of God in Christ Morton, Mississippi blessed us a with a message, “Women Being Women of God.” We were all stirred to continue in love and fellowship so that that when others see us they will be encouraged and motivated to seek God for themselves.

We were blessed to have representation from several churches in the area. Sister Annie Ward-Lowery of Mt. Mariah M.B. Church responded to the welcome and occasion. From Spring Hill M.B. Church were Sister Charlotte Huddleston and First Lady Ola Mae Jones, who took home the grand prize for bringing the most supporters. Other guests included Sisters Annie Bell Currie, Marsh Hill U.M. Church; Nina Noblin, St. Mark M.B. Church, Ann Bryant, Union Grove M.B. Church; Latoya Watts, Little Rock M.B. Church. Mother Pecolia Laster represented Macedonia COGIC

Our fi rst lady, Mother Wanda Littleton, was overwhelmed by the “Love March” given by the ladies of GDC and “Basket of Love” in the form of a designer handbag donated by Brother George Tucker.

Th e program ended with a “Circle of Love Unity Prayer” where hand in hand, we stood in the gap for lost souls praying that their hearts would be stirred to come to Christ.

There will be a series of four blood moons over the next two

years. Such events have occurred only three other times in recent centuries, and each time they were linked to signifi cant events for the Jewish nation. For example, when it happened in 1493 and 1494, the Jews were expelled from Spain. Th e blood moons in 1949 and 1950 came right after the nation of Israel was assembled, giving the Jews a homeland for the fi rst time in thousands of years. In 1967 and 1968, it was linked to the Six-Day War.

Th is is more than just a coincidence. It’s ironic that these events just happened to be on certain Jewish Feasts days. Seven back-to-back blood moons have fallen on the fi rst day of Passover and Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles) with the eighth time coming in 2014 and 2015. Th e others were in 162/163 A.D., 795/796 A.D., 842/843 A.D., and 860/861 A.D. Th ere are no known historical connections of these years, but it is known that signifi cant Jewish persecution occurred during the eighth and ninth centuries.

For the year 2014, there will be two blood moons with the fi rst occurring on the First Day of Passover, April 15, 2014 and the second one occurring on the First Day of Sukkoth, (Feast of Tabernacles) on October 8, 2014. Th ere will be an added event in the year of 2015. Th e religious year will begin with the total solar eclipse on Adir 29/Nisan 1 (March 20, 2015). Two weeks later, a total lunar eclipse on Passover (April 4, 2015) will be followed by the civil year beginning with the solar eclipse. Two weeks later, another total blood moon lunar eclipse will occur on the Feast of Tabernacles.

Could 2014 or 2015 be the year for a global economic collapse? Could it be the time when Israel and Palestine sign that dreaded Peace Agreement? Is Pope Francis the one that will walk alongside the Anti-Christ as the false prophet? Th e eclipse of the sun signals danger to the nations and eclipse of the moon signals danger to Israel. Th is is then followed by the total lunar eclipse/blood

moon on the Feast of Tabernacles. Not only that, according to NASA, this total blood moon on September 28, 2015 will be a perigee meaning it will be a super moon and seen in Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles while the Jewish people will be dwelling outside in their sukkahs looking up toward the heavens. Th e odds of this string of events occurring are truly astronomical! Th e next Blood Moon Tetrad sequence is coming soon and if this pattern continues as history has shown – a major prophetic event regarding Israel is on the horizon. Time is running out! Are you ready for the next event on God’s timetable? “And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fi re, and pillars of smoke. Th e sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.” Joel 2:30-31 (KJV).

I was honored by Elder Littleton when he asked me to write this article. Th is subject came up

over lunch during my visit to Jackson, Mississippi in September of this year. Even the waiter, who was an Anglo Saxon, was extremely intrigued by our conversation about this simple command “Occupy Until I Come” that has been overlooked by the African American church for decades.

It was during this conversation that I somewhat criticized the African American churches for not stepping up to the plate for not taking care of our community by not following this one simple command that Jesus gives reference in the parable of the nobleman giving his servants talents in Luke 19: 1 – 28. I asked Elder Littleton to examine why Jesus took business owners with Him on his crusades vs. the deacon, preacher, lazy man and poor man? If you examine the 12 disciples, some of them were fi shermen – Andrew, Peter, James and John. Phillip, James and Judas (Th addaeus) were tradesman of some sort. All of them ran their own business and could hire others. Jesus also selected Judas Iscariot who was the treasurer and thief. Judas was a white collar thief that recognized this great opportunity given to him by Jesus to expand the message of the Kingdom, but he struggled continually with fi nancial insecurity. Matthew was a tax collector and Simon engaged in politics. You probably already know why the deacons, preachers, lazy and poor men were not chosen by Jesus.

Our community is plagued with high unemployment, crime, drugs, sickness and diseases like no other community in America. African American consumption spending is well over $1 trillion; so we are not broke. Th e African American church in 2002 deposited well over $1.1 billion in banks across America. Yet, as believers we are sitting idly by hoping, jumping, shouting, and praying in tongues while the opportunity to go in and possess the land is passing us by. African American male unemployment is over 26%, and we are waiting on government

to solve our problems when we serve the “King of Kings” and the “Lord of Lords.” In this article, my aim is to show you that it is our responsibility to take care of our community and provide for those who are lost.

Often times the church will teach believers that we should not hide our talents. Which is true; and that we should give our services to the church; but, the church also has responsibility to produce a conduit or catalyst for believers to prosper from the talents. Believers get shafted and burnt by the World and other believers because our African American churches don’t own or control the seven kingdoms of the world which are: Government, Finance, Media, Religion, Education, Entertainment and Art.

In Luke 4 Satan tries to negotiate with Jesus by saying this:

me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

Notice, Jesus never said to Satan that he was not telling the truth. Why, because Adam turned the kingdoms that were in his control over to Satan in the garden.

We must now examine the defi nition of the word “occupy” in Greek and not in English in order understand the context of this parable in

Luke 19:13. Why the Greek meaning vs. English? Jesus didn’t speak English during this period of time and since there are many translations we need to go back to one of the original translations during biblical times. Th e New Testament is based on the Greek and the Old Testament is based on Hebrew words. Many believers view the word “occupy” in terms of the English meaning which is also listed below.

In this context, the word “occupy” appears only this one time in the entire canon of Scripture. Th e word in the Greek text is pragmateuomai [prag-mat-yoo’-om-mahee]. Strong’s defi nes

this word occupy to mean “to busy oneself with” or to engage in “trade”. Related Greek root words are pragma [prag’-mah] which is defi ned as a “deed”, an “aff air” and by extension a “(material) object”, “business”, “matter”, “thing”, “work”; and pragmateia [prag-mat-i’-ah] which means “transaction”, by extension “negotiation” or “trade”. All three Greek words are the root of our transliterated English word pragmatic, meaning “effi cient”, “functional”, “practical”, “realistic”, “reasonable”, “sensible”, “useful”, “utilitarian”.

Webster’s defi nes “occupy” as “to take and hold possession of, as by conquest”. Th is meaning is often associated with military operations, as in “occupational” forces which hold vanquished territory following a victorious campaign. Since Our Savior is the Conquering Hero Who has accomplished the victory for His own nation, it would be reasonable to conclude that there should be an “occupational force” which would both hold the conquered territory as well as transact the business of His Kingdom within that realm. Many of the treasured hymns of the Christian Church take up the general theme of the Church Militant; and even though militancy might be taken to fl eshly extremes among some groups, the importance of this force must never be diminished. Only when we are fully submitted to the leadership of the Holy Spirit will we recognize and properly assume our assigned post in His occupational force.

Even if we go with Webster’s defi nition, ask yourselves are we taking back our communities? Do we have a plan to take or and occupy communities that we once grew up in or are we just riding through on a Sunday waving at our friends and family members once a week giving lip service to God.

Th e church has the solution to our problems because we have the talent. No matter what defi nition we examine in this

article we have a mandate to do business in our community. If we examine other Religious Organizations like the Catholic Church, Southern Baptist, Presbyterians, and United Methodists each of our Anglo Saxon churches own and operate Universities, Schools, Hospitals, Radio Stations and

Banking Institutions.

Recently, I viewed a Bloomberg story about Magic Johnson and Jay-Z both have accomplished a great deal in terms of business as African American business men in our community and both came from humble beginnings. Both of these men are game changers in our community. Now it is our time to move beyond the fear, doubt and speculation. It is our time to truly act like we are Kings and Priest. Now is the time for you to ask yourself “Is there no king in you?” “Are you royalty?” “Are you made in God’s image after His likeness?”

Th e time is now for us to rise up and walk. To work as a team under the leading of the Holy Spirit and begin to put our people back to work. Ask yourself this, “If we don’t do it then who can?” We are God’s people. God is counting on each of us to do our part. I am so excited about this divine partnership.
