rAy hryNkow Scholarship Announced

The GDC Foundation is pleased to announce a new educational scholarship for design students. The Ray Hrynkow Scholarship is to be awarded to a third year student in a four-year design degree program. The award will go to a candidate showing great promise as a “thinking” designer — one who demonstrates an understanding of sociology and anthropology in their work.

The scholarship will award $500 this year, through the GDC National Scholarship program, which is judged in April.

The Scholarship honours Ray Hrynkow cgd, fgdc, a well-known Vancouver design professional who was awarded Fellowship in the Society Graphic Designers of Canada in 2011. This is the Foundation’s first named scholarship.

MilEStoNESour fall 2011 campaign goal was to raise the Foundation’s seed capital to $20,000 from our spring total of $13,500.00. As of December 31, 2011 our total in the Foundation was $19,527. This is the highest annual total yet, with the greatest number of donors!

It will take time to build the GDC Foundation. It’s a big job to try to raise the amount of funds required. This is a long-term, legacy project for the GDC. It will have a tremendous impact upon designers and the communities we serve!

THANK YOU to all our donors for being a part of this effort. Your donations are the building blocks of the Foundation. Contributors to the first $25,000 will be recognized as Founding Donors.

• Promoted the “Get Behind Design” campaign in the eNews, on the GDC website, and on Facebook and Twitter.

• Used draw prizes to attract attention and raise awareness of the Foundation. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of companies and individuals who donated items for the draw ($2,300 value). These gifts helped to get more people talking about and donating to the campaign.

• Enlisted the help of Design Edge Canada: they provided a web link to the campaign, an interview in their August web news and a mention in their fall print edition.

• Encouraged Chapters to host a fundraising event, and provided them with a short speech and promotional rack cards to use to promote the Foundation at events.

• Created a presentation for the 2011 National AGM, which was made available to chapters.

• Invited and reminded GDC Fellows to contribute to the annual Fellows’ Challenge.

• Sent an informational rack card to new members and current members as they renewed membership.

• Recognized donors on Twitter, Facebook and in the GDC eNews. We also added donor’s names to the Donor list on the GDC website.

G GDC Foundation Update 3

• Launched the Fellows’ poster sale in the GDC Store. The posters from the GDC@50 exhibit are still available online and the proceeds will benefit the Foundation. An article in Design Edge, Dec. 5, 2011 helped promote the sale.

We developed a basic strategic plan and further refined the bylaws for the Foundation, based on the Canada Corporations Act. The Foundation is operating as part of the GDC, but we are looking into eventually becoming a separate corporation. At this point, the operating costs are still too high to make this feasible, but we are researching options for the future.

We developed a system for tracking gifts in-kind, began integrating the Foundation marketing with GDC marketing, organized the fall “Get Behind Design” campaign and poster sale, wrote articles, and did promotion, promotion and more promotion.

We hope you will continue to support the Foundation, and we invite you to get involved in helping us spread the word and making things happen.

We are a committee of three, with two other volunteers who offer ideas and fundraising assistance. There are many tasks to be done. We’d love to hear your suggestions for fundraising and promoting the Foundation. Email us at [email protected].

FActorS Affecting Foundation Fundraising

We know that the current economic situation is not conducive to supporting non-profits. People have fewer discretionary funds. Many non-profits and charities have had deep funding cuts and are in dire need. And, they have very compelling cases, making the competition for increasingly limited donation sources fierce.

Generally, the highest proportion of donors to non-profit causes are those born before 1945, but their numbers are steadily declining. Boomers and Gen X and Y are the now largest potential donor segment and attention needs to be given regarding how to attract their giving.

The Foundation has a fairly limited donor audience due to the nature of the fund which is aimed at designers, design educators and students.

On the positive side, we have support from our Fellows; GDC members are beginning to have a greater awareness of the Foundation; and Chapter executives are helping spread the word.

People understand the need for the Foundation both as a GDC asset and a professional asset. We have a growing number of followers on Twitter and we had more donors this year than ever before.

THE FOUNDATION WILL OFFER:

• Benevolent assistance to help designers when a career-challenging accident, illness or other crisis occurs

THE FELLOWS’ CHALLENGEIn 2006, Michael Marshall FGD C challenged all GDC Fellows to make a commitment to donate $100 per year for 10 years to the GDC Foundation to help build the capital fund. The GDC is grateful for these contributions and for ongoing support from Fellows.

Please consider making a bequest to the Foundation to help grow the fund.

“I was in the hospital with cancer, treatments weren’t going well, I was very ill, had no hair, no work, bills piling up for expensive weekly medications that weren’t covered by insurance.

A GDC colleague brought me a big bouquet of red tulips (Pantone Red 032) and a cheque for over $700 which she had collected from Chapter members on my behalf.

The difference it made for me was profound. It relieved some of the financial pressure and gave me hope that helped me get through the worst of the whole cancer experience. It was encouraging to know that the GDC was behind me. A national fund could do so much for members.”

Student ScholarshipsTo Support aspiring designers in taking their EducAtioN to a professional level.

“Winning a GDC scholarship wasn’t just about receiving financial help, it was a great

encouragement, a sort of “You can do it!” which I needed to hear, in order to fearlessly continue with my design career.”

Scholarships for professionals To help ExpEriENcEd dESigNErS think about what they do in new ways, keep up with changes in the profession, gAiN iNSpirAtioN, push boundaries.

“A National Professional Scholarship Programme would be an important addition to the GDC’s valued member benefits.

Attending TypeCon, via the VI Chapter’s Professional Scholarship, kept me sensitive me to the ongoing evolution of type use from print through mobile devices, heightened my appreciation for good fonts well handled, and stimulated me

to think more analytically and creatively about my own work. Life-long learning has helped keep me excited about the profession of graphic design, and flexible through its changes.

A National Professional Scholarship Programme would encourage members to take advantage of the invaluable conferences, and educational opportunities so beneficial to continuing development of professional knowledge.”

– Miriam MacPhail cgd, Vancouver Island Chapter Scholarship recipient, 2010
