Project Summary

General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) asked ON Communication for creative options to enclose their Template and Tool Room area in advance of the first-ever visit by the General Dynamics, Board of Directors in August, 2011. This area can be somewhat unsightly under normal circumstances because of the nature of the equipment kept there. In addition, it is located in a high-traffic area at the intersection of two major walkways – where visitors such as customers, dignitaries and government officials normally begin a tour of the GDLS facility. ON elected to build on a creative concept it developed just two months earlier for a major defence industry exhibit for GDLS where it showcased its newest Light Armoured Vehicle technology to the Canadian Armed Forces. This concept was extremely well received at the time and GDLS was quick to buy into the proposed strategy. ON’s proposal was to design high-quality vinyl wrapping 7 ft high by approximately 140 ft in total length, designed as a large mural (actually made up of 6 separate banners) that would stretch around the entire perimeter of the Tool Room. The wrap would showcase the entire GDLS product offering in use by Armed Forces of their key customers - Canada, United States, Saudi Arabia, Australia and New Zealand. Action photography would feature vehicles and troops from various in-theatre operations around the world. An overarching statement at the top of the wrap would capture the essence of the GDLS’ mission.

Intended Audiences

Customers and other visitors to the GDLS manufacturing facility including; Armed Forces personnel from various countries; Corporate staff and General Dynamics Board of Directors; dignitaries, political and government personnel; and GDLS employees.

Objectives

1. Address an unsightly area in a high-traffic area of the GDLS manufacturing facility plant by producing a large mural and installing it in time for a Board of Directors visit in August 2011.

2. Develop a statement to capture the essence of the company’s mission and pay tribute to troops deployed with GDLS vehicles in operations globally.

Key Messages/Theme

Tagline: Tools for the job and the best protection we can give them.

1. GDLS produces armoured vehicles that soldiers can depend on to fight for the freedoms we cherish. 2. GDLS delivers the best tools and protection we can give them.

Creative Rationale

ON decided to take advantage of ‘wall space’ in such a way that it would become a focal point in the GDLS facility. The montage of photography featuring troops and vehicles from in-theatre operations provide a large and compelling landscape of real-life product applications. To overcome the challenge of having to use photography from different sources and of varying quality, ON chose to employ a duotone style on a white background. The powerful images deliver the desired effect and the very simple and emotional statement at the top of the banners clearly explains the company’s purpose.

Results

GDLS received numerous compliments from the board members who were the first visitors to see the graphics. Other visitors and dignitaries who have since seen the banners have also commented on the impact the banners have. They were most impressed with the dramatic effect the banners have and how they draw people for a much closer look. Employees have expressed how the message and visuals reflect the sense of pride for the work they do and were pleased for the creative way the company has enhanced an otherwise unsightly area. This success has resulted in a second assignment involving another set of banners in the same general area.
